Boats

Recommended Posts

Something of which I don't think that has been explored enough in DayZ Standalone is the topic of boats. Currently we don't have much in terms of naval exploration but with the idea that the island of Utes could become a potential off shore island of Chernarus I thought what sort of "transport" could be used to get there?

As some have said their opinions about Air travel, I thought about the next best thing and thats boats.

Here's some examples starting from small to large:

An Inflatable Life Raft - Commonly found as an emergency equipment aboard boats or in and around coastal areas. These self-inflating life rafts are handy to have to survive in coastal waters and are usually outfitted with their inbuilt survival kits containing fresh water, emergency rations and emergency signal flares. They usually come inside of a large carry pack (which could be stored in a backpack, albiet taking a fair amount of space.

A self-inflating portable, 1-2 man dinghy - Similar to the Life Raft, a self inflating 1-2 man dinghy complete with its own telescopic folding oars. Could also come in its own package which can be stored and "deployed".

Rowing Boat - A wooden rowing boat, often found close to the coast as static objects but could be found docked at port yards, you'd need to find Oars (which could also be applied as makeshift melee weapons) in order to use a rowing boat albiet some may have oars already on-board (abliet rarely). Additionally a small outboard motor could also be found at even rarer chance.

Sail Boat (Small) - A small sail boat complete with sail to utilise earths natural winds to propel the craft. A small outboard motor could be found to use as well in a similar vein to the Rowing Boat.

Fishing Boat - A fishing boat that could come in all sorts of sizes, difficult to use and hardest to maintain. A fishing boat has enough room to store several people, not to mention store some valuable supplies and emergency equipment, but it's often banged up shape (due to rough waters) often leads them to be very difficult to maintain.

Barge/Ferry - Quite possibly the largest and even the most hardest to maintain, but is large enough to even carry vehicles across from islands to island at a time, albiet at a slow pace.

Nice.
I would say possibly remove the small sailing boat from the equation, but the barge is a cool idea.

On top of this should be brought back the original sailing boat from the mod, and maybe a larger version you can actually go inside of.
{edit: because in the original version you couldn't go inside the fishing vessel when it was cold and wet, so you would eventually die slowly of hypothermia-type illnesses}

Can't wait to hide off the coast on a boat with foodstuffs to survive in a lengthier, more cowardly fashion, or have clans ingame sailing their fleets up and down the coast sniping and being sniped in turn.

They had boats in the Mod, with the exception of the zodiac (or whatever it's Russian designation was) they were fairly useless as they were very slow (I swear that one 'pleasure craft' used a power drill as an outboard, I can SWIM faster than that in real life).  With the addition of Utes they shouldn't be as useless, even as slow as they were in the mod, they'ed be less so if there was a river(s) that could be used to travel inland, but I digress.  The only bad thing about the boats in the mod was that you could not simply get up and walk about them, you either drove, sat in a passenger seat, or were thrown overboard.  I doubt that would change easily (but there's always hope that they alter the physics/mechanics enough so that our 'dreams' of walking around an RV/Bus that's going 60MPH down the coast road and shooting back at bandits may come true)

my beans for boats..

with all the ports on the map i am looking forward to find a working boat :D

They should add one or two small islands tho, that are only reachable with a boat or aircraft.

The zodiac type boat was a 'PBX' and they were not slow. You could very quickly get them up to 70. The other white boat. The fishing boat or whatever? Just ugh. You're right. The max speed seemed like about 4. They were always found out in the water ( great in the days when you dropped your sh*t if you swam), and when brought close to the beach they were as likely as not to become stuck at the shoreline. Add to that the fact that they guzzled gas like a drunken heli and yeah... Avoid....

But always liked the PBX great way to get around the edges of the map. I'm just not sure boats are much worth the effort for Chernarus. They're always stuck on the coastline and the game is not about naval stuff. With the exception of a few not so exciting islands (Skalisty with some uildings and such topping the list), I'd think the number of boats per server would be quite limited and they'd be extremely difficult to protect. Just run along the shoreline until you find one...

AFAIK this is an engine limitation. In a few words you can't walk or move at all on moving surfaces. After some googling, there seems to be someone trying to achieve something like that on ARMA 3 here. Offical thread here. But I'm not sure about the TOH engine. Personally I think this is a big issue with the engine and needs to be fixed/patched asap.

Thanks, forgot the name of it, and I meant that was the only one with decent speed.

Sounds sweet, they might be able to implement it into the DayZ engine (it's called that now since it's different enough from TOH) if they get it working.

They're going to add Utes island in sooner or later, they don't have it in now because it would just use up resources and there'd be no real good way to get to it till they add in the revamped vehicles (IE boats).  Not to mention the map team are probably still working on it.

was gona post about this, but found this older topic. would be so amazing with a squad that had a large enouh boat to walk around on, free movement yeah, didnt think about that not being possible, but woudl really be needed for larger boat to be worth having i think , or at least positions that are reasonable cover and you can crouch for cover if needed.

you could cruise right from balota up to berezino or svetlojarsk and a few stay to defend boat while others go get food supplies or whatever, a few boats on the map, when server pop increased, this would be actually amazing.

Three things I want to do with boats, have a good variation of size.

Barges, tugs, and big fishing boats would be awesome.

I want to be able to walk and move around on deck while the boat is moving.

I want a good amount of customisation, I want to be able to customise my boat into a full on assault platform.

Basically what I want is to be able to live like a pirate with my friends.

Maybe some super rare military PBRs could get thrown into the mix so I can fulfill my Apocalypse Now fantasies. Guns, supplies, room for people, and "Satisfaction" blaring over the radio. Great idea, though. I like to sail and boat in real life (I know how to work my grandfather's sailboat) and boats are pretty useful. Fishing, traveling, etc. Hopefully they might add rivers and streams to go inland with and there'd be a real use for them.

Didn't we also suggest an inactive aircraft carrier with zombies on it off the coast? The S.S. Anne, I think it was. That would definitely be incentive for hopping in a boat to find some military loot somewhere you know you probably won't be expecting to be sniped out [because you'll be able to see if someone else has a boat moored]

I think it was the USS Kesan (Spelling questionable) which at least in the Arma2 universe was stationed off Utes for the campaign.
