Weapon damage vs. "Armor"

Recommended Posts

Well I have been able to test this in actual combat, i.e. putting items in your chest inventory to reduce damage. I have only been shot at with protective cases in my vest (UK combat vest) so far. I have not had the chance to try out ballistic helmets in my vest nor had a chance to try out the ballistic vest itself.

- "Test" 1 (from ~100 meters): Had two protective cases in my vest (worn), one was pristine the other damaged, I got shot in the chest with a Mosin and didn't take any damage nor started bleeding. My vest, both cases and their contents were ruined. My tactical shirt, along with the items in it, did not take any damage.

- "Test" 2 (from 3 meters): Had one protective case (pristine) in my ruined vest (yes the same vest which got ruined previously), got shot twice (although I am not certain if the second bullet hit) in the chest with an SKS, did not take any damage nor started bleeding. Protective case, tactical shirt and both their contents were all ruined.

If there are any of you who have tested or "tested" various combinations of vests/items and to what effect, please share your findings.

Also would like to know what everyone thinks about this i.e. putting protective cases/ballistic helmets in your pants/chest inventory slots. Although it does make sense that they would indeed reduce damage, I don't think anyone would be running around with a ballistic helmet in their cargo pants in real life :D

tl;dr you put shit in your pockets and get more armor :p

I wasn't testing this but I had a pristine uk assault vest at full health- not sure what I had in it. It was full but the top row of items were ruined but the bottom was damaged.

My shirt was undamaged.

See: Books

I am assuming you are referring to books doing the same thing. Care to elaborate?

I believe Rocket mentioned in a stream that it was a mess, and that he would like to redo the entire system.

I imagine this will change, or at the very least, the values will be tweaked.

What did you get shot with?

So basically armor acts like it was solid steel plate that neutralizes all of the force from the impact and the guy behind it doesn't even feel anything? I mean W   T    F    ?

See below.

Can confirm.

That would be the ideal reality of body armour, sadly it's not as I'm sure lots of people have realised lol.

They (pristine condition) will in the least stop a point blank Mos.. one shot. That much I know.

Even extremely modern military body armor has a hard time stopping bullets at certain power levels.

Notably for our discussion: 7.62mm rounds... SKS level ammo (short, lower charge, lower energy) can be stopped very effectively. Larger loads like those from a 51mm... its up in the air on the manufacturing quality and your luck that day.

Edit-add: To be fair, with the armor is STILL a less likely chance of irreparable damage and immediate death, but even with armor, the sheer energy release of highpowered rounds are EXTREMELY lethal, vest or no vest.

You simply have a slightly better chance of medical assistance being effective with it, than you do without,

That would be true. Too much hollywood in the brains....like running away from the blast of an explosion or so that expands with almost transsonic speed.

I was always led to believe that military ballistic armour was more about keeping your internals in, rather than keeping bullets out. At least until recently when developments have been made. Either way I've seen people with broken ribs and internal injuries from taking hits. Bullets also have a habit of ricocheting off the plates and doing more damage because of them.

The British Army was using a ballistic vest up until 2007 that couldn't stop a stab wound (tried & tested), let alone enemy rounds lol.

And it's just the plates that stop the bullets, without those they are worth nothing unless the enemy uses sticks and stones...ok it will stop pistol rounds...it's basically just your average kevlar vest without plates.

I need to get used to this new damage modeling.

It seems to easy to me now.

I rarely die anymore. I just get shot and run to cover, and 90% of the time Im still healing and 60% of the time I don't even bleed?

Much preferred having to bandage everytime I was hit by a zed or bullet.

Yes this is more realistic?...I guess, but I really liked one maybe 2 bullets would take a person down as long as it's in a lethal spot.

Just my opinion :)

Crash helmets, buddy. What happens in DayZ, stays in DayZ... except herpes. That shit comes home with you.

On a serious note though, good to see someone actually testing stuff like this rather than just going nuts and behaving like the game's a finished product. Props for taking the testing part seriously.

It's not, it's pretty terrible

It will be changed

This is all a work in progress, hence alpha and testing and playing with stuff. Obviously it's not ideal and will be messed with sooner or later. I do love the more scientific approach from most of you in this thread rather than the usual OH GOD THIS IS STUPID THIS GAME SUCKS CAUSE THIS IS STUPID AND IT ISN'T GOING TO EVER CHANGE BECAUSE IT IS STUPID RIGHT NOW.

Let us enlighten them... http://softbodyarmor1.blogspot.de/2012/01/difference-between-soft-body-armor-and.html http://purchaselevelivbodyarmor.weebly.com/hard-body-armor-vs-soft-body-armor.html

Here is a good example of what a 00 shot can do to a soft vest and now tell me a guy walks away after hit by THAT!
