Darkest darkness

Recommended Posts

I quietly push through the abandon town, I know they are here, they are every where since the infection took hold I shouldn't be here but driven by hunger I push on.  I see some poor wretch standing swaying in the road silently, I take a breath and move slowly behind her. I hear the sound of a foot scuff on the gravel, "was that me?" I looks around careful not to move too much.  Then it happens the blood curdling scream I turn to see him looming over me mindlessly attacking I try to run but now she is in on it along with a half dozen others that I'd crept past.  This is how a I die a feast for the infected, I wonder will there be enough left of me to become one of them.....

Night play can be fun, but at the same time I currently do not play night because turning the gamma and brightness right up ruin's the experience, but is a must in order to stay competitive with the other night time players. Aside from the obvious correction to the gamma exploit I have found that I tend to have a black line and for me to see anything I need to have my light on (not very stealthy) or have it silhouetted against the horizon.  Ive seen this image floating about from a reddit poster but it was a little too bright for my liking night need's the darkness but not so much I can't even see my hand's.

How do you feel about this situation? do you just gamma up and roll out? is this pic too dark/not dark enough?

To me night time is perfect, the only problem is as you said: "to stay competetive with other players that exploit it"

i hope they do get a "fix" later on to negate these exploits but until then i only join low population night servers

gamma exploit is like legal cheating despite what people that use it will always say that it is not, due to the simple fact that it gives you superior vision over others

Edit: a lot of people say that in real life it isn't as dark as the game...

in real life we have street lamps everywhere or a light source nearby, try going to a forest at night and night time in the game is brighter!!

I try to skip night servers, because it is rly hard to figure out who is who, and who is your friend. I use them only when needed.

Agreed with sQubanny, it's simply too dark and it's easy to lose track, looking for loot is hell and makes my eyes rly tired and head hurt xD

If they would add night vision goggles I might consider joining

PS: I bet that 95% of DayZ players evade night servers and it'll probably stay that way until some change to it (that picture is perfect btw, would enjoy if nights would look that way)

I don't mind the chaos of night but I have been out in the middle of no-where and it's not as dark as the game currently is.  Turning the gamma up is cheap, it's another in a long list of thing the dev team is no-doubt working on, IMHO it's on par with the sound bug in terms of annoyance.

A tad darker than the Image. but still enough to see your hands.

I like the idea of hiding in the dark, and moving during the cover that night provides, aslong as you actually see SOMETHING.

also the risk of making fires for food.

i love playing at night, but gamma etc. should definitely be regulated/set by the server or whatever. torches should be necessary at night, you should have to think about when its safe to turn it on and risk giving away your position. it adds a great element to gameplay, I just wish it wasnt so exploitable at the minute.

Gamma and brightness ARE NOT THE ISSUE lol, I could turn both to max on a pitch night and get no difference at all. Clouds is what makes it dark, testing it the other night i found that clouds off (even with gamma and brightness at default) it was just like having full moon nights on the MOD ;)

Clouds affect the light, yes but when players are able to turn the gamma and brightness up to unnatural level's to make it a grey daytime, then yes gamma and brightness are the issue.

But they dont help, at all unless clouds are off. Even with clouds on low you will have almost no difference in the colour. Now when clouds get turned off, thats where that black and white daytime comes in. Try it in-game youl see what i mean ;)

I play for my own entertainment so I tend to avoid night time servers because though I understand how dark real life is minus light pollution ... I also dislike the idea of physically S****** myself when a zombie jumps the f*** out of now where at me.

IRL your eyes adjust to darkness. Yes, you can't see as well, but you can make out shapes of trees and bushes. It's not completely black most of the time. When the Moon is out it's really easy to see.

Have you tried it? I have, and didn't notice a significant difference. Closing my blinds, turning off the lights and turning off my second screen IRL helps more than increasing brightness/gamma. But who wants to play like that?

I play on night servers frequently, but use the gamma exploit because I know other people are. It's just too easy to use for anyone to ignore it in such a high-stakes environment, where not seeing something (or using your flashlight) can mean instant death and character reset.

I would enjoy it more if the exploit wasn't available.

If it wasn't for the gamma glitchers, I'd love to play on night time servers.

Same. Doom 3 style pitch black ugliness isn't what i'd call a solution either.

In the mod, the amount of people using the gamma exploit means that if you value your avatars life even slightly then you turn up your gamma and nightime = a black/white daytime or a shades-of-green daytime from NV goggles. No.......thanks.....

This is why i think they should just bite the bullet and make a four hour daytime cycle that had 1 hour of "dusk", which would be just be dark enough to reduce visibility only very slightly, only enough for the top .0001% of prick player on the server to turn up their gamma, and bringing out the moon and stars giving a very nice "night effect". Then remove the gamma and brightness sliders from the menu making them a little harder to change.

Imagine the absence of light, that's pretty dark.

Without sunlight, the night is pretty dark. Without sunlight reflecting off the moon's surface, it's pretty black. Without major cities beaming up city lights into the atmosphere, we're talking black-black.

Then there's starlight.

The sun is our closest star: The sun, it's light takes +8 minutes to travel to Earth.

The next closest star, it's light takes 4.2 years to travel to Earth.

You can't use starlight to see, unless you have a night vision device, modern day devices enhances starlight thirty thousand times.

That depends how dark the night is and how cloudy it is really.

Its not just the night sky. I have to constantly recalibrate my brightness and gamma based on my location, different times of day, and the lighting in my own room. Whatever FUCKING IDIOT decided to make the lighting system work like this needs to be fired and shot, simply because whoever it was, is to stupid to be allowed too live or reproduce.

Turn brightness down all the way? Don't bother you can see through the sun glare better with it on max. GOOD SHOW DEVS. You really know how to not be retards. (Utter sarcasm).

I know what you mean, you need to have certain setting to allow the gamma exploit to work.  The fact that it doesn't work on particular setting is an indicator that this can be fixed so the gamma can't be exploited in game.

I don't remember but I thought I had to turn clouds on to make that work.

But never so dark that I can't see my hands, before I played with the clouds I literally could only see the horizon, with stars and everything below was black, not even a hint of anything there.  In the pic I posted there is actually street lights but I felt I could see too much of the characters so I dimmed it down, for a full night without a moon, I'd say a bit darker still.  But then a full moon that is actually pretty bright although not nearly what can be achieved  via clouds and sliders.

From my experience night is a bit broken, I'm not saying it's completely screwed just need some loving and the gamma/brightness/clouds exploit dealt with to make it a more attractive and fair playing environment.

I don't believe people don't play at night because of gamma exploiters. It's because it's night time. Sure, you can risk running around to find loot if you like, but when your senses are as deprived to such a degree it's just natural to be reluctant to move about in a hostile place.
