What do we really want as far as Day/Night?

Daytime/Nighttime cycle and quality

111 members have voted

  1. 1. What do YOU want the time cycle to be at release?

    • Leave it the same. 1:1 with the real world. Daytime/Nighttime servers.
      37
    • Compress it slightly. May still be a need for Daytime/Nighttime servers.
      17
    • Compress it to include multiple realistic day/night cycles per rolling 24 hour period. Ratio to be determined, little to no need for Daytime/Nighttime servers.
      57
  2. 2. What is your ideal darkness?

    • Leave it pitch black at night, and lock gamma/brightness or otherwise force players to experience the dark.
      23
    • Leave it pitch black with current gamma options. Players CAN brighten their game for free night vision.
      4
    • Lighten nighttime slightly, so nearby objects have an outline. Lock Gamma/Prevent increased visibility.
      66
    • Lighten nighttime slightly, except with current gamma options.
      13
    • Lighten the game Significantly, virtually eliminating the threat of darkness as we know it currently.

Go ahead ya'll.

My ideal darkness would be pitch black for about 2 hours max with gamma options locked(always) and then Full Moon nights until the sun came up.

It is still dark, but you can navigate without closing your eyes and hoping for the best. This would also eliminate a 40 man server turning into a 5 man server when it went pitch black.

I believe that we should all grind out pitch black nights for a couple of hours, but not be blanketed by it for half a day, also considering different time zones and countries.

I think playing in a nighttime server that is full (30+)is some of the best DayZ experiences you can have.

I think a speed up night cycle would be ace, this would help alot of the players that are stuck working all day to get off and enjoy night time only.  Say 4 hours day, 4 hours night rotating through server restarts.  As for night itself, I would enjoy a little increase in playability this would include either making more active street lights and or night itself being a few shades brighter for movement and engagement.  You could still conceal yourself in dark corners, but overall could have enough visibility to understand the lay out of the map and areas without turning up gamma options.

Overall I just see a potential gameplay element lost to community desire.

At the point of having daytime/nighttime servers, I think something should be done by release.

Just make it realistic, the current state is ridiculous. (no clouds and pitch black, are you kidding me?)

Agreed, I think elements could be added overtime to achieve a good balance where nightime is enjoyable for all players and not such a turn off to majority.  I personally love night time, but I think it needs more to it in order to make it more immersing overall.  With my current work schedule if I was unable to jump to other countries and or day only servers I would just see night 6 days a week which is great but gets old.  Nighttime should be looked forward to with additional aspects making it worth sticking around until daylight breaks.

See, I'm personally down for the current level of darkness, I just want the time to be shorter.

I must sound like a broken record, but with the in-game loot economy, switching servers will have no real point besides escaping a never-ending darkness and an empty server lol.

I agree with the fact that people that work, come home, and want to play a while always at the same time, will see always the same day/night period, missing out part of the game.

In games like minecraft, the cicle is very short and, altough not realistic, allow you to experience enough of both alternatively. I think that a compromise between 1:1 and short shifts would work better.

As for darkness and video settings "night time vision", I think that having to turn on a torch is part of the gameplay: get gear or be spotted? On the other hand, running out of batteries and having to crawl in darkness without an alternative source of light is unfortunate but I hope other sources of light will be added, like torches, lighting a match in your hand etc...

Keep it the same time wise(24 hour days) but lighten the darkness slightly, maybe the longer you're in the dark the easier it is to see, you know? Like in real life, your eyes adjust to the darkness.

This part would be a neat addition.

I'd go for a 1:4 ratio (1hr IRL = 4hrs game), meaning a full day or night would span 6hrs. This gives a long enough time frame that you won't see a number of day/night cycles during a single play session (very off-putting in games that do this) whilst still retaining a realistic looking transition if you play through one, and it's short enough that there's plenty of choice of servers for day/night preference pretty much regardless of geographical location.

When I finally play, I will most likely only get to play in the evening. I want to experience DayZ through Day and Night, 6 hours of Day, 5 hours of Night sounds great to me. Allow the moon against the clouds to bring the twilight haziness to the land. Where you thought you saw something, but it's your mind playing tricks.

But this brings up another post I saw, about moon phases. How bright and dark it'll be at night depending on the phase of the moon.

If there's no source of ambient light, then you should not be able to see. At all. Without a torch.

Pitch black with no moon/clouds and rain, or in dense forests. Moon cycles, and light quality changes with how much of the moon is visible. 4:1 day:night cycle would be acceptable to me, but I'd rather just see a flat 4 hour day/4 hour night cycle. Absolutely gotta have to lock gamma/make brightness not affect lighting quality at night. No visibility at all inside rooms with no windows. Make torches and night vision goggles actually mean something.

People complain about not being able to see because they don't want to use their torches and risk discovery. Let's face it, this is the ultimate motivation behind any call for changes to the depth of the game's darkness at night. Personally, I don't see that the devs should change it at all. Take the Dark Souls approach. Listen to your players, look at how their suggestions level with the overall game balance, and if you see something that affects your game balance in an adverse way, change it. Otherwise...

...Nope.

Though to be purely selfish, I still want to see perma-night servers.

I like the realtime day/night cycle, but I think it should be a little bit easier to see. Think ArmA 3, not Hollywood nightime though.

I wish it would just be a server option, but the people on this forum seem to hate letting server admins change the server at all, so my second bet would be a default 1:4 ratio.

I have come across a solution to this issue in a fantastic game called Gran Turismo, I belive it was first used in the Gran Turismo 5 game and is still used in the newest version called Gran Turismo 6.

As someone already suggested above it would be an option presented to the admin upon server creation.

It consists of a set of sliders. You can set the start time and the variable which controls time progression.

Another addition that could be considered is another couple of sliders which control length of Daylight/Darkness.

To me, really anything to re-implement day/night as a gameplay mechanic lol. Either I can play in the dark all alone or in the day with no loot and crazy axe men.

I`m missing the vote option, server owner control the day/night cycle. He can speed up, disable etc... Can`t vote this.

I play on 24h cycles.

At night you should be able to see at least 20 meters around you minimum with no moon.

Dark interiors should let you see in at least a 5 meter radius to simulate the sense of touch since we can't feel our surrounding environment.

I would like to see a condensed day/night cycle so I can experience both day an night when I play since I usually play at the same time every day.

Gamma/Brightness settings should be controlled when creating your profile, to change them you would have to reset your profile killing your character

That last part I like, because I think the original purpose of having gamma/brightness sliders is still important. The game may show up brighter/darker depending on individual computer and monitor set-up. Although gamma/brightness is abused, it would be unfair to completely ruin a player's ability to play the game (say because his setup is naturally too dark, or too bright) by completely locking the gamma sliders. At the same time though, making you lock in gamma at character create would solve that problem.

You forgot 24/7 day...

that would be listed under "eliminate the threat of night as we know it."

Doesn't matter if that means 24/7 day or night so bright that you can see anyways, same ideology.

All I know is that I have never jumped into a almost full server yet and it was night time...They fix some lighting issues that might change. (flashlight illumination and so on)
