comikz 218 Posted January 22, 2014 Before we start, yes I have used the "almighty search function" on these forums to bring up posts of similar content, but they didn't really answer anything and contain biased opinions on either gun and such, so please bear with me... I tend to like to stick to myself, or in small manageable groups of three to five people. (Been adding friendly/mature types that I meet in-game or forums.)I am having a hard time choosing because well, I like both of the guns but I don't care to have to shuffle either gun in my hands so to carry both of them, so I want to choose one.I have been watching a lot of YouTube videos on these guns, and both look great, it's just people say the Mosin is clumsy in CQC and the M4A1 has horrid aim/pattern.I was wondering since I tend to like to do it all, if going with a combo of Mosin/FNX45 would be good for someone who want's to survey an area with a scope or snipe baddies, then go into buildings/close areas with the 45 to loot and such, if that would work out? Because I like the idea of being a sniper, but I don't want to be shat out of luck when it comes to looting in buildings where mosin use is not good. Any advice is welcome, I have thick skin so if you need to yell at me for being a noob go for it!
Bash Arkin 266 Posted January 22, 2014 Mosin for Distance, M4 for spammy close range goodness, thats all you really need to take in to consideration.
GpB311 236 Posted January 22, 2014 I currently have a mosin, fnx, and magnum. I prob woulnt have picked up the magnum initially, but it took me a couple days to find just one mag for the fnx while I found like 30 rounds for magnum. I probably havent given the m4 a fair chance since Ive used one only sparingly, but I like accuracy and tend to bring out my handguns when indoors anyway. Z0mbi3z 15 Posted January 22, 2014 Mosin and an FNX45 is good, The FN is a little inaccurate so you could go with a revolver, They tend to be louder and don't have as much ammo capacity so if i were you get a Mosin Whack a Pristine long range scope on it, Grab a FNX45 and a mag or 2 (You can keep re filling them with the .45 bullets) and just go snipe those pesky bandits! I use the FNX and a Mosin ALOT! Never fails me unless the opponent combat logs which is ALL THE TIME! Happy hunting
TD808 71 Posted January 22, 2014 Think about what range the majority of your engagements have been thus far, if you have tended to fight at a distance use the Mosin if you have fought more at close quarters use an M4.
Meeshe 170 Posted January 22, 2014 Personally, I'd just like to see a weapon, would use either if I found one. :)
Westerburg 41 Posted January 22, 2014 Mosin is mainly for KoSers. I have yet to find one, but I've seen other people with them and they are loud as fuck. There's weapons they refer to as 'dinner bells' and for a good reason. The mosin and the 357 make so much noise it'll bring every zombie around to you, not to mention letting everyone know you're there. The trade off is that the mosin has a lot more range than the m4 and the 357 doesn't need a clip to load. On the other hand the fnx and m4 are a lot more customizable to suit your needs, quieter, fire faster, hold more ammo. I've found at least 4 different scopes just for the m4, not to mention bipods, various gun stocks, grips, supressors and the like. If you survive long enough you'll find plenty of clips for both the fnx and m4. You just have to be brave enough to go after them.
BuddyRP 41 Posted January 22, 2014 that depends entirely on your playstyle imo. do you enjoy scurrying about towns / cities / military where theres corners and tight areas all around? (city dweller) OR are you more of a patient observative type where youd like to be fully aware of an entire area all at once while hidden in safety? i personally never use / carry a sidearm when the m4 is my main weap of choice; its ammo is more common than both .45 & .357 (from what ive seen at least) and its accuracy is FAR more than superior to the fnx45. good for a quick spray to players in close quarters, even better to drop a zombie from a decent safe distance. where as carrying a mosin as my main weap i will always carry the fnx45 due to it being a more silent and alternative with a greater rate of fire for the zombies who sneak up on you. mosin with fnx45 vs. m4 with magnum would be the logical way to go in terms of primary & secondary. this way whichever your preference, you have a high rate of fire to take care of zombies either way while you also have the single shot with a kick for when you need a bit more power / range. so again, it all boils down to whether you like being up close in the action, or further away watching your prey from a safe distance getting the drop on them :)

kichilron 8550 Posted January 22, 2014 I was put into the position that my squad was pinned down by two snipers. While they had no problems whatsoever I had that annoying problem where I couldn't shoot my Mosin, as the only thing I hit was the hillside directly in front of my face, even though I was laying on a downslope and my barrel was nowhere near the ground. Then there is the problem where it took you ages to reload that thing while your character is wiggling about and you can't move for about 4-5 seconds. That really put me off and I stepped away from using the Mosin - even though I liked the idea of it and the feeling of running around with an old, single-action rifle. Why not? But I am mainly using the M4 now, as that doesn't have that many problems and is actually useful, as most encounters are close range anyway for me. (As I'm hardly put into the position that I have to snipe.) As long as you're not using out for MAINLY midrange you're better off with the M4.
Blazing87 14 Posted January 22, 2014 Can we get a mosin in the hands and a m4a1 in the inventory or is it patched?
DirtyscumbagLith 270 Posted January 22, 2014 I always used an M4- had many many fun exciting times with it. Then I changed to the mosin. Long range scope- holy f'in mamma mia. thats fun too entirely 2 different styles of game play.
comikz 218 Posted January 22, 2014 After thinking about it, I want to be a Hunter and stalk people/prey from afar, so Mosin seems to be my best bet, coupled with the 45 seems to be my ideal setup, Mosin for range, and the 45 to dispatch anyone/thing that sneaks up on me. Thanks for the help and advice, and nice avatar Dirty. :D
Problematic 71 Posted January 23, 2014 Because I can't choose I carry one on my back and the other in my hands. Sometimes it's risky leaving a gun on the bottom of ladders but those things are dangerous anyway. I always scope towns out with my Mosin + long range, whenever I feel it's safe I go in with the M4. escobert 112 Posted January 23, 2014 Mosin and an FNX45 is the way I go right now. However since I seem to be the scavenger and point man of the group I will be switching to a shotty when they're out. I may switch to a M4 in the meantime.
GoldenKade 73 Posted January 23, 2014 Can we get a mosin in the hands and a m4a1 in the inventory or is it patched?Yep, not patched to my knowledge - it's not really a glitch either unless you log with both guns.
GoldenKade 73 Posted January 23, 2014 If you couldn't tell from my ... profile picture? I'm a huge fan of the Mosin. If you play tactically at all you should be able to kill anyone as long as you can hit a moving target at 500 meters. My 2 cents for the Mosin are listed below.1. AIM FOR UPPER BODY OR ABOVE. You can and will kill anyone with this upper body shot - I've stalked bandit groups while they sprayed up the coastline with M4's and the M4's can actually shoot quite a distance. Don't for the love of god shoot them in the leg, giving them time to go prone and blow your face off. 2. Make sure your long range scope is worn or above, otherwise you may miss some crucial shots. The wear level may not affect the accuracy but I think it does. 3. Personally, I'm just fine getting into CQ engagements with the Mosin as long as it's only one person. If you can hit the first shot, they won't pose a threat. If you can, find an FNX for CQ, it's probably more reliable. 4. DO NOT RELOAD WHILE PRONE. Whether this bug exists still, I know not, but to my knowledge reloading the Mosin while prone will put you in an incredibly annoying glitchy animation that makes you spaz out on the ground as if you're having a seizure. This glitch has killed me in a firefight. 5. If you can, grab the PU scope. I find that the PU scope actually does some justice and it works well in firefights in closer ranges. Stelfox 4 Posted January 23, 2014 (edited) I usually use a mosin, long range scope and a PU one. The PU is great for 100-300m shooting, its a lot like the M14 AIM from the mod, and the long range obviously is great for those bandits hiding in the hills, BUT, the Mosin tends to be extremely inaccurate at over 400m unless you have a bipod deployed. Also if youre not good at judging distances that may also be a setback. I also use a fireaxe for zombies, its one hit and quiet> Any gun. Lets be honest theres very few zombies in the game(Which is kinda disappointing, as id prefer groups in the 100s lol, but it is alpha). I carry a .357 for close range. The spread on the FN seems a bit much but I think they lowered it in the patch? So it may be better now. Edited January 23, 2014 by Stelfox

Am I the only one who doesn't have an issue with crouching and hitting someone in the head at 500-800 meters?
doomdesire86 16 Posted January 23, 2014 Mosin and Magnum are my personal choice. Walk around with the magnum out, and take out your mosin for engagements where it's needed. The new patch made it so that you can reload your magnum simply by pressing R, you no longer need to hit TAB, so that's a huge plus.
DeatHTaX 1217 Posted January 23, 2014 Mosin for Distance, M4 for spammy close range goodness, thats all you really need to take in to consideration. idk, I've done some experimenting with the M4 with the bipod deployed full prone and as farm as accuracy at distances go, I've been able to single shot kill Zombies, and mess up some people from distances of over 300m (i measured it on the DayZ map). But there truly is nothing like a good ol' fashion WW2 era rifle dropping a baddie at long range :D way more satisfying. At the end of the day though, the obvious advantage goes to he who wields the M4, so I'd have to go with that :) and i'm a customization whore lol
