Currency - what would it be?

Recommended Posts

When I think about currency, I think about something valuable.

What could be more valuable then gasoline or natural gas?

It can make you run a generator to have electricity. It can get you to place faster if you fuel your car. Can help you eat warm, or to stay warm. You can make bombs with it.

You can use it in a blowtorch to repair vehicules.

I think the gas is the way to go, since it would be one of the first thing we would run out of.

Remember supply and demand. A stick and rags are very common and mostly worthless. But you find a guy crawling around with a broken leg and suddenly it is a seller's market.

Extortion comes into play when you broke his legs.

It's something else when your friend breaks his legs, leaves, and then you come around the corner with a splint. Fraud, maybe?

I should stop giving you sick fucks these ideas.

If you want to barter, approach someone in game and hope they're up for it and don't kill you. Ammo should hopefully get rarer (I picked up 120+ rounds for my FNX just moving from Berezino to Electro) and then it can be used as bartering currency if you have nothing else of value. No reason to trade or barter at the moment though...

If we (players) would have to come up with idea of a currency in the game - what would it be?

I think it should be batteries - every player have on at the beginning and keeps it. Would it encourage more player kills?

Super easy to farm, with kills or suicides.

The game is about trying to stay alive, different items and services are gonna have different values depending on the situation you find yourself in.  Some things will be valued more than others, but rather than sticking a set price on em, let the players wanting to trade negotiate a price between themselves based on their actual needs and wants at the time. I have 3 tins of beans and nothing to open em with.  You have no food, but you got a pristine can opener,  I'll give you a can of beans if you open my other 2 for me?  That's the only workable trade system I can see.

... and matches will be the most valuable item in the game.  Ammo and bandages ain't gonna cook ya meat and boil ya water!

One word- Metro 2033.

Why not make ammo a currency? You would always have the dilemma- to spare it or to deliver it to someone directly?

Like this...bullets might work

Hello there

Until its "better" to trade than to just kill and take, IMHO we wont see a great deal of organised trade.

Id like to be proved wrong.

I think we should use something that is fairly common, intrinsically useless, and stacks. I recommend .22 caliber rounds. I mean, Fallout uses bottle caps, this can't be any worse. Or consider real life, we use paper and plastic, some of the most common shit on the planet.

Cigarettes.

Why? You can make your own extremely easily. All you need is rolling papers and tobacco. With even a simple hand roller, you can crash a cigarette-based economy with a few hours of work.

Remember, in order for a currency to be worthwhile, it has to have some perceived value, either real (gold, cattle, etc), or artificial (current modern currencies, etc. Seriously, the currencies of the Western world aren't even based on anything, just credit). Therefore, something that either doesn't have a wide range of use (cattle, alcohol, tools, etc) or has some aesthetic value (gold, electrical power/ lighting, etc) is a poor basis for a currency.

I've said it before, and I'll say it again. Hard alcohol would be the best form of "currency" implemented in Day Z, at least in the form of a base-level trade good, where the value of all other goods are based off of. Multiple uses, ease of storage, quality can be controlled (and taxed, incidentally, with only licensed makers being allowed to produce). You don't even have to trade directly in the booze, make up some sort of coin and say "1 coin gets you a gallon of moonshine. An average goat is worth 5 gallons, a breeding stud 15, 1 bushel of corn is worth 2, etc etc". That gets around the issue of "flooding the market" (preventing a market crash) Simply turn in your coins to the distillery and you get your booze. Booze never depreciates in value, nor should it rapidly increase in value, unlike metals or other forms of currency, and it will always be wanted.

Beer for the Beer God! Whiskey for the Whiskey Throne! Let the Galaxy drink!

Booze is awesome.
