Julius Caesar 1760 Posted January 10, 2014 Yes. It could be alot simpler if i learned how to speak russian. But this is a video game. and the underlining fact still stands that with normal typing on most of our keyboards we couldn't even type out the actual Russian name to people by typing without some use of alt codes or something. For instance some friends bought dayz after seeing me and some buddies play it and they got into game. They asked where i was and i told em cherno. I told em to find a road sign and they couldn't even come close to pronouncing it. It wasn't immersive at all. They had to do what everybody else has to do. Go to www.dayzdb.com and figure it out. It was an annoyance to them and i'm sure every other new player that gets into the game.. This problem could be solved quickly. The fact is if you have played long enough like i have you will know the city without having to use a sign. To me doing this will make a "Video game" more enjoyable to alot more. Just cause they can read the sign still dont mean they know how to tell which way is up once they read it. Well, in regards to pronunciation learning to read it helps a lot. Well, it can be immersive if you couldn't read it since the survivors have no back story. Since, it too annoyed me I went and learned Russian just to read the signs. Well worth it to me. Some people dont use voice chat and just types. You run into them all the time and they wouldn't have the ability to type out the name if they even chose to if the need arose. I understand the arguments why people wouldn't want it it changed but i think it changing it far outweighs the reasons not to. Once they got there barrings they wouldn't need the signs anyway. People will always use the english version of the names and i see no huge problems this would cause because in the end this is a video game.

I personally like being able to practice my Russian with the signs. I guess I like languages too much as I know how to read German, Latin, Greek, Russian, Finnish, Italian, Japanese, and Spanish. Capo 323 Posted January 10, 2014 i'd rather they stay in russian, no english please. the entire point is that you either have to be able to speak russian or find a way to translate it. Maybe in cities they could have bilingual signs (only maybe), but most of the map is rural backwater. I've lived in rural backwaters, they don't even change the signs if they've got bullet holes in them. I don't think it would have been on the governing body's agenda in the middle of a war, and in the ensuing epidemic, to make chernarus a tourist hotspot. . But i just fail to see how this would cause any crushed imersion feeling any of you guys are trying to play this off as. Tell me the last time you actually looked at a street sign of an area you already know. Never i sure dont. Simple fact is if it was in the game from the start then this wouldn't even be a discussion and i would bet my lifes saving nobody would be on here complaining about how the signs had english names posted below the russian name and i would bet my farm the rest wouldn't be backing them saying how it's stupid and needs removed instantly. It would end up just like this post will in the end and be ignored after the forum bashes had there fun. This would have a positive impact on many people without doing a single thing to the people thats already been playing it. people just wants a reason to bitch just to bitch about something and bash it
DaGolem 95 Posted January 10, 2014 I hate the Cyrillic BUT........it is very funny if a friend try to read the signs. It is like a guesswork, where da hell he is, what letter he say? :D In our Teamsspeak it always between laughing and moan. @ styxxbtw. You are American, right? The signs are in russian because they are setting a scene, they aren't in english because that wouldn't help set the scene. There is no reason why there would be signs with english, and your own laziness is the only justification you can think of. don't get angry because people don't like your idea, why don't you think of a way to make your idea better? This would negatively impact the first impressions of many who play dayz, and the first impressions make an atmosphere. Most peoples first memories of dayz are of having no clue where the fuck they are, and having no way of describing their location to their friends, thats the point. I've played dayz for a long time and it's been brought up by many people i've played wth during that time that are just plain annoyed by it. I think the consequences of making a small change like this would benifit more people then it would hurt. The game would still be 100% the same amazing nail biting experience every time you came across a squad of random dudes. @ styxxbtw. You are American, right?Yes sir look man, you don't even know the difference between german and russian (hint - they use different alphabets), and you don't look at the street signs yourself anymore, so why do you want the signs in english? why not ask for the names to be in russian on the map instead? that idea is about 10x less shit than yours. You are 100% correct. i dont know german or russian, Being as i will never have any desire to go there i prob never will. Honestly what effect would small english versions of the towns on the road signs effect you in anyway negatively? I decided i would post this after a night of playing where a new buddy to the game just logged out and quit playing after being annoyed at having to alt tab to read an online map to figure it out. he couldn't even type out the actual name to just google it. Yes it would make the game easier in the way that people would no longer have to go to an online site to figure it out. But to me thats a silly way to want to annoy your players in a survival game. This should be able trying to find food / water / shelter / gear / dodge zombies / enjoy the epic encounters from other players. At the end of the day i see a change like this as only making it a bit more user friendly when a large % of the players speak english. And for the 95% of the players like you guys this wouldn't effect you guys the least little bit. In the end this is a video game.and from experience with new players when you have cities that you cant even say the name of with seeing an english version of it thats not a atmosphere setting for fun.. thats just stupid I'm done with this thread btw.Sorry for starting a frenzy of change haters, I just made a forum account to post this as it was forcing people that i got to want to play this game to regret ever buying it and it's not the first time i've heard it. But i think i've stated that a dozen times by now.
quobble 175 Posted January 10, 2014 Man the biggest grip I've had about Dayz from the start has always been the German names on the road signs. I know the signs in real life don't have English versions written on them. But my argument behind why it needs changed is if the whole town had tons of English speaking people landing on there shoreline before the Dayz apocalypse they might have Not asking to change much but putting English names in smaller letters on the actually road signs underneath the German names in game would make my enjoyment of this game skyrocket 10 fold.its RUSSIAN not GERMAN. You insulted my honor with that! :Djust kidding. but no. after a while you will learn what the Russian signs say. I understand that newbies might have problems with the roadsigns and names but i promise you, you will get better.
thedogfoodyayho 295 Posted January 10, 2014 I think it adds to the suspense to not know where you are. It renders Browser maps slightly less op, but DayZBD has both the Russian and English letters. But once you play awhile, you won't even look at the signs. Stop trying to turn this into a "more fun" game by making it easier.

Since, it too annoyed me I went and learned Russian just to read the signs. Well worth it to me. Ummm.... NO? Do you realize that most of names look like KDJJEWROXXJUASUJDAJ to western people? It's so joy to find your mates on the map. "where are you?" "let me se, it reads POXXOHHHHNXEDO on the sign". That helps a lot. Like, most of the letters don't make any f*cking sense so us western people. And we are the main market. I know game is located on some east european s*ithole, but I would prefer user friendliness over "realism". Why not make menus on russian alphabets only while you are on it?OP is right. Fix this when you got spare time. It should be simple texture mod. And no, not going to learn russian to play this game. There are many other way less useless things to master. St. Jimmy 1631 Posted January 10, 2014 The only problem is that the names are in English on the map when they should be in Russian.
Gdaddy22 299 Posted January 10, 2014 (edited) I like them as they are. Adds to the atmosphere. Once you learn the map, you won't even look at the signs. This, after playing a while, I know every single coast town in Russian, I never have to look at map and try to translate Edited January 10, 2014 by Gdaddy22
Baarn 53 Posted January 10, 2014 You only need to read the names of cities if you are communicating with friends. In that case just read the Cyrillic signs if they were written in Latin letters and describe your surroundings. There are not that many cities on the map, should be easy to figure out your location. Try to figure out alternatives if you lack certain abilities.
irishroy 1347 Posted January 10, 2014 Thats besides the point. There are English stop signs already in game and Bilingual signs in Russia. Seeing how in ArmA lore, Chernarus was a point of interest to the west, this would not be too far fetched.yup, but does chernarus look like a big "international" region with the villages of 2-8 houses..? as much as i ALSO didn't like it in the beginning, NOW i don't want it to be changed, really. This, and many other things, give DayZ the special flair.and that's, what it needs.Flair. Just find some "english" names or name sin your own language.Chernogorsk, elektro, balota, green hill, zub, etc.
JuX 72 Posted January 10, 2014 You have to take in to account the Russian state of Chernarus is fictional and doesnt not exist, so demanding englishtranslations is simply outrageous, because you say some real Russian cities may have translated names on them. The unknown names give additional survival experience and you have to use your wits to know your position on the map.Simply by knowing shape of town, landmarks and terrain you know where you are. Navigating is a survival skill.
OrLoK 16185 Posted January 10, 2014 Hello there Perhaps the date line is pre the end of the Cold War? I too like the russian(?) cyrillic signage. It gives the game character IMHO. Rgds LoK
vytautasphn@gmail.com 1 Posted January 10, 2014 Authenticity and realism aside: what's the point? There is no real valid reason to bother. I am sorry, but if you bother to read a road sign and cannot understand what it says then you are most likely just taking a quick glance and thinking "meh, never seen these symbols so I will not bother". Here's a quick tip: You know where Electro, Chernogorsk and Balota are? Go to them, look at how it is spelled and match the sounds to the letters (English versions sound just as they do in Russian). If you cannot read every single city sign from there then go do it again, because obviously you didn't. Now going back to authenticity: The people are correct. There is no authentic reason for signs in English to be there. You would just not find such things. That picture with the street names is irrelevant. You will get the English names in large cities with a bulk of English speaking traffic (let's say Airports, tourism hot spots etc). Go outside of the city into the countryside and I doubt that any of those will have signs other than the native language. Russia aside, can you honestly say that going into the deepest parts of Ukraine or Poland or Germany or anywhere else, you will have all towns all smaller cities labeled with names in English?

floj 393 Posted January 10, 2014 Hello there Perhaps the date line is pre the end of the Cold War? I too like the russian(?) cyrillic signage. It gives the game character IMHO. Rgds LoKI've been wondering about what era they were considering staging the events in... I'm not good enough on milporn to know when the M4A1 was first produced, but from some wiki-fu it looks like it's a recent variant. on topic: Cyrillic alphabet becomes secondary to recognising the towns by their key buildings and geography. You don't really want to be sprinting down to the main roads or stations to find out where you are after a few days of game time :)

That means taking every last shred of control you think you should have, and shitting on it, then setting it on fire. you and your friend are obviously young, ignorant and self important, so it's about time someone said - If the game is too hard for you, go back to CoD. Fuck player friendly, fuck catering the game to English speaking preteens and fuck the idea that "west is best", you ignorant cretins.
