PvP and admins. Any advice?

Recommended Posts

Hey guys.

I know this is a really touchy subject on this forum so PLEASE bare with me:

Since about 11 months I have been hosting PvE servers and I want to switch them to PvP instead.

But, because I have seen what a lot of admins on private hives are doing wrong with people that kill them,

I wanted to avoid the whole PvP part of the game and just be admin and avoid that fact that people could be thinking I abuse my powers even though I don't.

If there were no issues with admins abusing their powers, I would happily join the PvP party and play for real. But that's the problem: there ARE issues with admins on PvP abusing their powers.

And I would understand if you would say: Don't be ingame! But that's not the point of being admin.

If I am admin, I want to be ingame enforcing the rules and taking measures agains people not following the rules, helping with glitches, etc. etc. (that is what I have been doing on my PVE servers at least)

So, guys. Any advice on what to do? I know there are people on here that know everything about this because of their expierence so please share it with me and help me out with this issue that I want to cope with. Thanks!

Regards,

IT07.

Play in game under a new profile and only reply using Dart for admin queries, that way people won't know you're an admin and think you're a fellow player :)

I personally have stopped playing on the servers I manage simply because noone can say anything, then. Obviously you still need to be ingame to monitor the server and the players - that doesn't mean you're a regular player, though.

And even though I have stopped playing as a normal player on those servers I have power over there are still people calling out adminabuse, because they see you ingame (on the playerlist) and assume you're playing normally.

The only way to stop that and stop getting heartattacks over wrong accusations is just to stop playing. There are a lot of other servers out there you can spend your time on and play normally, if that's what you wish to do. If you simply change your name and play amongst others pretending to be a normal player you will sooner or later be called on that and have an even worse argumentation, even though you ahven't been abusing your powers.

In my oppinion there's only one way: be admin or be player.

Yep best way to manage a server.

Its so easy to be acused for admin abuse if you play on the same server you admin on.

I have a PvP server and never really had any issue's with that,  the only I did have was when I did get reports of 1 of my Admins abusing the powers which quickly ended in their removal.

As many of the players on my server would testinfy when I'm ingame I'm a player and if I die well thats the game and start again unless I'm needed to do any admin things then I log out to lobby to deal with it,  anyone is welcome to join the server its a friendly enviroment well for a PvP server anyway lol

My advice would be just be fair to people and they'll respect you for it and trust you

any admin that plays will abuse... period. if they say otherwise they are liars... period.

I've been admin on 3 servers and never found the need to cheat :p but i also play as part of a large group so gearing up and transport was never an issue.

Change to PvP (PvE is boring as hell) and just don't be an asshole. Are there other admins on your server(s)? Tell them if you ever, ever suspect them of using their admin status as an unfair advantage in any capacity whatsoever, they will not only lose your respect as individuals, your friendship, and admin status, but they'd be permanently blacklisted and whomever they cheat-killed gets all of their stuff and the public announcement "Admin such-and-such is an asshole and banned, have a nice day :)"

Rott's generally a liar. If he says otherwise, he's a liar. So we have nothing to worry about then, do we?

You'll be accused of administrator abuse most of the time unless you command respect from the majority of the players on the server.

I have friends whom are admins, and if they wish to actually play PvP, they just change their name to avoid the bullshit.

I think to be completely honest, the only way you can be 100% sure that you won't be accused of admin abuse is to not play on any server you admin. As we've seen recently in this trainwreck of a thread, people will not hesitate to assume the worst and then shout their opinion from the rooftops, whether they're in possession of all the facts or not.

Sadly gaming is infested with sore losers - the kind of people who can't comprehend that it may have been a mistake on their part or good play on their opponent's part that lead to them dying. If they died, then there must have been some other factor to it besides their insurmountable gaming ability - if you kill that guy, what do you think he'll do? Say 'gg, you got me there'? Fat chance. He'll be screaming admin abuse to anyone who'll listen, and sadly there are plenty of people who are willing to believe it because it's (equally sadly) not all that uncommon.

In the example I linked to above, the video wasn't even filmed on a 'live' server, it was a private test server, but it didn't stop the accusations flying in at some pretty well-respected members of the community.

Even the option of changing your name when playing is a risky one, because if it gets out that you've got admin powers (and it will sooner or later), you're still going to have the same problem, but this time the witch hunters will insist that you were even so nefarious as to use alternate profiles to cover your 'cheating'. You can't win.

So yeah, as sad as it is, unless you either know every player who will connect to your server, or are exceptionally good at dealing with the fallout from sour losers and abuse accusations, it's just a headache waiting to happen. When the need to play rather than assist takes you, simply find a good server and go there.

You sound like a realistic and down to earth guy,

I would suggest just to play normally, if people complain then so be it. Even record it so you can shut them down straight afterwards

yeah just don't abuse and you'll be fine..being accused to cheat when you place a good shot or you are lucky is normal so prepare yourself. and don't hoard stuff so you won't be afraid of loosing a camp or  a couple of cars. good luck and have fun!

Target Practice has a good point there.

I was afraid of what he describes in his post. Just ONE little scumbag has to cream admin abuse over the side channel

and every guy who wants to believe that will leave the server. And all just because an admin had better skills than

the player he killed or something like that?

Nah, would rather not experience such a situation and not play on the server at all.

And using admin abilities to avoid players on the map is kind of a stupid way to play.

I always just use a different name, and never say anything about being a admin. Works in all games.

Plus the community is sometimes more likely to share stuff they wouldn't share with a admin.

I'm a little confused - What rules could you possibly be enforcing on a PvP server? I don't have admin cheats installed on my servers, so there's no way to abuse them. :)

In my opinion, being an admin/mod and playing on a server is possible, but my approach to the whole admin abuse whining is to simply not give a damn. You have to ignore some players who yell just for the sake of yelling. I play neutral, independent from everyone else, and don't have favoured groups, so I can't judge or help anyone. Myself, I always have enough gear becauce I play for loot, not for PVP. Works most of the time.

Rott, you have not made a constructive post since August--even still, they were hardly any good. Please at least try.

Stupid, ignorant, and false statement. Sounds like you've been anally violated by abusive admins in the past, and now you have a complex that forces you to think all admins are that way.

Go away.

There will always be people calling admin abuse / hacker even when there are no admins / hackers on. Just play, don't abuse, fix glitches, ban scumbags, and respond to false accusations as little as possible.

I'll admit people crying admin abuse is one of my hot buttons. I like to PvP and every one of my kills is legit. Lot of folks don't understand that the hardcore players who put a thousand+ hours into playing are often the people willing to pay for a server. I may not have a Starcraft champion's reactions, but I sure have a lot of practice and experience.

On another note, if I'm gonna spend 20+ hours a week on a server I want it setup to my liking and the power to ban hackers, combat loggers, and other people who ruin the fun. Take care of the server and even the carebears don't mind dying now and then so long as you don't camp the same ones for hours or something equally dickheaded.

Here's a prime example of what you WILL deal with: http://pastebin.com/K8YM4yVz We put up with them for a week or three before it got to the point they were driving people away. In another incident we banned three guys that wouldn't stop complaining for days and they DoS attacked the server immediately afterward. In the end I look at it the same way I look at gun-control advocates. They can't trust themselves with the power, so they point fingers and try to take it away from you.

Don't let them ruin your fun.
