November Round-up

Recommended Posts

Its making me nervous we're seeing all this western equipment such as rounds and helmets. Though I did notice the BKM 10 Czech gas mask in a video and screenshot thats a nice touch and I feel special because I actually own one. But overall I'd like to see an AKS or a Makarov or something just to calm my nerves.

*shrug* We've seen the Mosin-Nagant and the AK-74.

Not to sound greedy, but is 5,000 zombies out of the question? I was hoping for hells of a lot of zombies.

3,000 will probably be more than enough. I'll reserve judgment until I see it, and specifically the distribution of zombies. Obviously, I suspect the density will be higher in cities. But I'm more interested in the average zombie presence in the wild and in the smaller villages.

A house foundation?!?!? All I wanted was a shed!

If you think I am paying for that, you've got another thing coming.

Haha. Reminds me when I went to a bicycle dealer and repairer, and I went originally only to get my tire fixed, but the guy started assaulting me almost and telling me I haven't been keeping my bike in the right condition. I then told him I only wanted the bike tire fixed and he concurred to my request. The next time I came back the idiot had fixed not only my tire, but also the supposedly "broken frame," which ended up with him not wanting to return my bike unless I paid an additional fee - namely more than double of what it cost to get a tire fixed.

.. anyway I'm getting offtopic here. Back to IT'S HABBENING

Way off topic, but it seems we've some gun nuts in the thread, beans to the first person to identify this historic round of mine:

My money's on an old .56-56 Spencer cartridge.

DISCLAIMER - I had to look it up, my firearm knowledge only really extends to the early 20th century at best.

HISTORICAL EDIT - It seems that this cartridge, as per your annotation, was used at the Battle of Brandy Station which apparently featured heavy use of cavalry (which were likely equipped with Spencer carbines).

Indeed. It's not actually my annotation, it's a display card the person who gave it to me included (for display in a shadowbox), they also gave me a few .36 round balls, a .36 conical projectile, a .36 wrapped powder charge, and some other neat items from the time period. This was along side the purchase of an 1851 Navy, #'s matching and all original parts (1863 production, definitely saw combat).

Military History is so damn neat.

I heartedly agree, its an imbalance when you can tell five team mates sometimes on the other side of the Town or Village were to find the guy shooting and to help heal you. Your always going to have a massive disadvantage if a squad with com’s comes after you.

Same thing with that third person. I’ve seen streamers use third person to spot, move about and communicate positions from behind cover, Jump up knowing were the other player is perfectly because they have been able to watch. Worse still the same streamer then bitches because they have got owned by someone doing the same. Its like they do it, its all part of the tactics and skill but the other guy doing it is a scum cheat.

IMHO everyone should be forced into 1st person. The possibility of switching creates too big of imbalance and 3rd person ruins the purpose of the game.

The return of 1st person servers is something I'm looking forward to with SA. It was annoying watching them all vanish in the mod.

I completely agree. In the mod, if you have post-process effects on, it really makes you feel like you're the actual person.

With 3rd person in the mod, it doesn't make you really feel like you're there with the ease of looking above walls and corners.

I wish Rocket had the balls to go 1st person only... but you can imagine the tears.

'Boohoo I can't look around corners, above walls and grass anymore!'

I thought the main reason for keeping 3rd person view is to see our own character from outside. Just like in any other MMO(RPG) game. This feature, seeing your own character's appearance, makes it easier for the player to see the differences of his character customization choises and to feel a connection to their own character emotionally.

Ofcourse seeing around corners is soımething that comes with 3rd person view. However, they are planing to limit the 3rd person view in "prone stance" if I am not mistaken.

I had forgotten to reply on this issue.

It might seem contrary to my usual emphasis on immersion and deepening the experience, but I actually like third-person. Now, this is one of those issues that has surely been debated to death with many vitriolic arguments on both sides. Because of that, I won't go all "TL;DR" on you all like I normally do.

I just don't really have a problem with third-person. I understand that it can sometimes be unfair, and that it is an "immersion breaker". But what can I say? I like looking at my character.

I think there might be a middle ground to be found with a dynamic FOV, forced first-person when in combat, and/or stance-specific POVs as indicated above. Vehicles should be first-person only as well. But it should, in my opinion, be possible (somehow) to look at one's character. If it has to be through an inventory window, so be it. But I think there might be more thoughtful solutions than that.

I will say, though, that I am on the fence still regarding different servers having different POV options. My previous argument on honing and/or standardizing the content of the DayZ experience might apply here. But I'm still not sure where I stand on that particular aspect.

Indeed, call me a roleplayer but I definitely care how my character looks, and with the clothing and equipment options that will be available in standalone I would certainly love to see how my player looks in the outfit I've put him in, whether it's in the inventory menu or otherwise.

1st person is the immersion breaker.  In 1st person its far to easy to forget if you're squatting or standing, walking or running.  These are things you would never forget in reality and can only be simulated with 3rd person.  Until the Oculus Rift is available and I can have free form looking around, mainly including looking down and seeing my self to get at least some sort of feel for where my body is, 3rd person is the only way to give you a sense of self within the environment.  Otherwise I feel like I'm merely watching someone with a helmet cam on and have no immersion at all.

Even if you're not a "roleplayer", just from a pragmatic standpoint of knowing how well you blend in with the objects around you is reason enough for me to like third-person.

This is a side issue, and there's not necessarily anything wrong empirically with the way you use it, but I think there's a bit of misuse with the term "roleplayer" in the DayZ community. Strictly speaking, roleplay is just that... playing a role. Looking the part doesn't explicitly have anything to do with that. Now, it has everything to do with shaping your character as do a lot of other things. But, as it stands now, there's really no character-building. So, it's roleplay in the most literal sense of "What role do you play? Doctor? Bandit?". Even this literal roleplay is very sparse in DayZ and could use a second look. To be fair though, some of the systems they've planned for SA will add variety to the specializations to which players can adapt.

I come from an in-character roleplay background (I doubt this will have any relevance here, but I roleplayed a character on SWG for eight years) and there really isn't any place in DayZ for that. Not that there necessarily can or should be (I personally think there should be) as that might be outside of the scope of DayZ.
