Karmaterror 982 Posted October 24, 2013 Hey guys For me my perfect server population is about 20-30 players. I feel like that's enough to have encounters with people but not be in a firefight every few mins. However I have friends that prefer servers with nothing less than 60 players, a bit too much imo. And a guy I know only really likes servers with low population, say no more that 15, his argument is that he wants a feeling of isolation from dayz. I guess its down to play style a lot, so whats your ideal?
Fraggle (DayZ) 15720 Posted October 24, 2013 (edited) I'd say somewhere around 40 ish. I like it to be nice and busy so that I know in the traditionally busy areas there's some danger around every corner. Running around gearing up on an empty server has never appealed to me, I just can't see the point. With that number I think you still get that feeling of isolation when you venture north or to the less popular towns/villages. I'm hoping that the SA will comfortably be able to support 40 - 100 players due to there being more points of interest and the new looting system and game mechanics spreading players across the map more. boxman80 964 Posted October 24, 2013 I guess it depends on the size of the maps/what map is playing on the server too. I'd say the present Chernarus server a good number is as you say 20-30 players. Its fairly active then and you have to be cautious while still having enough room without falling over other players. I also agree with your other friend who likes to feel isolated. I love our server right now as it averages 4-5 players at a time and you can have the run of the server pretty much but still have to be cautious, but you have more chance of being able to secure a strong hold and build a good base. Small maps like namalsk I would say 10-15 players, is good, but the huge Taviana needs 30+ players!
mercules 1290 Posted October 24, 2013 Depends on what I am doing. When I am looting alone I prefer <12. With a couple of friends 30+.Hunting bandits 50+.

Also keep in mind that with all the new enterable buildings, you can probably have a hundred people hiding in Electro without ever seeing them. Personally, I liked getting up early on a server that is relatively unpopulated, but then starts filling up to near capacity as the day goes on. Sort of adds to the tension of having to get in and out of the major loot areas before the bandits start to "wake up".
deebz1234 243 Posted October 24, 2013 id say more realistic the better, so on a massive map like cherno 70+ i would love to see a 100 person server overwatch...mmmm
Firewarrior64 69 Posted October 24, 2013 (edited) id say more realistic the better, so on a massive map like cherno 70+ i would love to see a 100 person server overwatch...mmmm Well, there was a zombie apocalypse which only a few people are immune to. I don't think 70+ people would have that immunity in the area of chernarus. Furthermore, I think a (very) low player count adds a lot to the immersity. If there are 70+ people on the server you know there's almost certainly going to be a player in Cherno/Elektro/Stary/Berezino or the airfields. You will get contact with players a lot more often, and you'll (have to) shoot a lot more often. If there are only <10 people in the area of chernarus, it gets really lonely. If they also increase the danger of zombies, they will be the main thing you think about when entering a town. Less people on the map and more zeds also encourage friendly player interaction. Think about it like this: You are in a zombie apocalypse and permanently meet people, many of those being hostile. You get very cautious and maybe switch to KOS style. If you only see a player once a day or even less, you'll think about it more. 'will that player be useful to me?' 'omfg, a human! don't kill him yet, maybe talk to him!'. I think the main thing why the DayZ KOS style isn't realistic because IRL you can't escape the situation. You are trapped in the apocalypse, lonely, in the middle of nowhere. You'll be happy about every human encounter you get, to talk, to get intel about what happened, to maybe get back to a social life. Of course that can't be simulated, but I'd like to be player encounters a lot more rare. TL;DR <10 Threadjacking towards the effect of player count on KOS successful. Siberian (DayZ) 527 Posted October 24, 2013 12-20.. i prefer the survival aspect of the Apoc. if theres tons of people running around killing each other. its just like a war zone instead of a survival game.. weres the lonely desolate feeling if u run into people every few mins ???
geryon 180 Posted October 24, 2013 Chernarus is a small map. It's only 15x15 km map. For this size 12-20 is ideal for me as well. Anything more you are bumping into people without even trying. That's the beauty of this game depending on the population of the server you can get totally different game play.
Korsbaek 1778 Posted October 24, 2013 As many as possible. I love the rush after making it through Elektro or Cherno on a 50-60 player server.
crazykid1297 51 Posted October 24, 2013 I love high population, but as a server host, I always want at least 10 people playing on mine, but recently, my server's been rather dead...
Ozelot (DayZ) 394 Posted October 24, 2013 I only play on 0 pop servers until I get an as50. Then I go to the top of a hill, log out, and log in to a 50 or more server.

foliveira1982@gmail.com 14 Posted October 24, 2013 150. But as i usually say you start with absolutaly NO GEAR and also pistols should be comon, rifles uncommon, military grade weapons rare. Zombies also should appear in hordes moving to aleatory áreas of the map, like 200+. That would give a awesome gameplay experience with teams of 10+ players.
iegle 117 Posted October 24, 2013 15-20, for all the reasons already mentioned. My FPS drops pretty low when the player count gets too high as well.
geryon 180 Posted October 24, 2013 I only play on 0 pop servers until I get an as50. Then I go to the top of a hill, log out, and log in to a 50 or more server. Hehe. Are you the same Ozelot that hung around US 434 for a bit? I noticed you on Stakeland Epoch the other day (assuming the same guy) while I was helping the admin out with his mods and stuff. Only reason why I ask is because your slant on humor is very similar to the guy that had the same name.
King Tubbs 224 Posted October 24, 2013 for me 15 to 20I like it to feel like a zombie apocalypse you know we have basicly lost and contact with people is rare It realy ups the tension when a meeting is so rare

klesh 2423 Posted October 24, 2013 Is the number the standalone is shooting for still 150 per server? IIRC, thats where it was the last time I heard anything on the subject.

callsignBravo (DayZ) 323 Posted October 24, 2013 30-40 players for me is the perfect number, enough for a few skimershes but not enough to feel like a DM, epoch is a bit diffrent i like 15-20 because you meet people up north and in trader citites more but still mid pop servers are where i tend to play.
