DayZero Thoughts

Recommended Posts

this is what bothers me about DayZero the pay to win and the fact that the server files are not open

Exactly.  As soon as I see server files locked down alarm bells start ringing.  Personally I'd like to see BIS grow some balls and start cracking down on this shit but it's probably wishful thinking tbh.  I doubt it's worth their time or resources.  Shame though.

If someone works hard, makes a great mod then the donations will roll in regardless.  people will just want to support it and see it grow, that's how it's always been and that's a good thing.  Locking stuff down goes directly against the whole concept of modding and charging for perks goes directly against the core concept of DayZ.

This bullshit goes against the concepts of DayZ.  Pay 2 win is akin to WarZ.

I understand that servers cost money and donations to keep them running are fine, but paying for gear is complete crap.

wait, wait, wait!

People who read my posts know that i am a BIG enemy of pay-to-win/microtransactions and i want to clarify what dayzero does is NOT pay to win!

Two things:

1. zombies.nu (who are the developers of dayzero) offer reserved slots as a "thank you" to their donators and you can get another skin if you are a big donator. thats it. No advantages in game (weapons, vehicles etc.).

2. bmrf (who are hosting the dazero servers in the US) are offering pay-to-win! Yes it is pay-to-win, even if you only get rather small "packs". They already had the donate-for-gear policy when they were hosting vanilla servers.

Conclusion: The pay-for-gear thing is bmrf exclusive and has not directly to do with dayzero.

One small group of friends can easily cover server costs for months by paying $10 each.  This is money making pure and simple.

Is there a page where i can refresh my memory of the ' core concepts' of Dayz lads?

Locking the server files is monetizing your operation, the only access is through two websites, extra traffic more money from advertising, chuck in the fact your doing custom loadouts that's a hell of a lot of money from essentially someone elses work that you have added some stuff too. BI should grow some balls

Cheers for clearing that up.

Like i said, the skin packs are for US servers only (which i am not interested in). And I personally will not buy one of those packs as i think they are too expensive, and secondly i would love others buying them so i can kill them and take all their gear.

That still does not alter the existence of the contradiction.

In fact given how they are using this pay to 'win' model and trying to profit from another's idea it has put me off real quick.

It's not pay to win. It's more like "help to pay our servers".

Why do they need to host their own servers at all?

Maybe control.

Servers really don't cost that much.

Highly depends on what servers you host and how much traffic you cause. Then €25 is supposedly" life long" access. So it's not really that much. I don't believe you can talk about profit with this model.

Modding is a creative hobby, that's just what it is, all I see now is people cashing in.  To me that goes directly against the whole concept of modding itself.  Saying "we accept donations" is very different to charging for certain perks in-game, optional or not there's a fundamental difference.

Yeah. The difference is you get nothing so you don't have an incentive to pay money. Give them some cheap crap and at least they have something to show for. And what do they get? Starter pistol with 2 mags, some morphine and stuff. Nothing that can't be found within 30 minutes playing.

It doesn't really matter that much.

Then ask for donations - no need to hand out gear.

Who really wants these custom load outs anyway?

Nope, accepting donations is helping to pay for servers.  Really though you're missing the point because anybody should be able to host a server for DayZero or Origins if they wish, that's how modding has worked for years.  You need to ask yourself why they only have specific servers in the first place.

Could it be that they've altered files that as modders they're not legally allowed to alter?  Making those files public would quickly shed some light on that.  Could it be to drive people through certain websites to gain revenue from advertising?  Could it be both?

Either way if the server files weren't locked down we wouldn't need to ask these questions.

If your sole point is that they deserve money for what they've achieved then you don't understand the whole concept of community made mods.  Most of the content they're "selling" isn't theirs to sell in the first place.

All they need is a home website with a "donate" button, job done.
