Dayz walking simulator.

Recommended Posts

In dayz I sometimes feel like it becomes a walking simulator.  It can get really boring doing nothing but running from point a to point b for 15 minutes (then dieing and having to do it all over again!).  The main issue is that this is part of dayz.  So I am making this thread so maybe we can come up with some ideals. (I might be the only one who thinks this.  If you don't think there is too much walking in dayz then just ignore this thread and let it die.)

My main ideal is just to spawn us with a bike!  If this happens the bike needs to be nerfed though.  I have never seen anyone pedaling 30 mph+ before. (bike should have a speed limit of 25.  Still faster then walking but it will be slow enough so its not OP and this way finding a car is still a big deal)

Pros.

No more walking simulator.

Your character isn't constantly wheezing and breathing in your face.

Cycling is more enjoyable then walking.

Cons.

You don't get that special feel when you find a vech anymore.

Zombies aren't as big a threat anymore since you can outrun em.

People with horrible aim will have a even harder time hitting players!  <_<

Another Ideal I have is to just make bikes much more common instead of spawning you with one.  THEY ARE BIKES!  They are not rare in this world.  I see them a lot so it would make sense they would be lying around.

I am sure a lot of people agree and disagree on this.  Maybe I am the only one who thinks dayz can become annoying with all the walking. MAYBE I JUST SUCK AND CAN'T FIND A CAR!  Also try to remember to use constructive criticism if you disagree.  I don't make threads often because of my fear of embarrassing myself...

As long as it may take, I enjoy the walking part of DayZ.  There's just something about it I enjoy.  Maybe it's because of the realism aspect of it.

I don't think bikes should be added.  Besides, they are hard to control anyways.

I don't think spawning with a bike is a good idea, but they should probably be more common.

Bikes are all over the place IRL.

If there was more of a cost to your stamina (or food/water needs) it would be more lifelike too.

Really though, when on foot, you shouldn't be thinking of traversing the WHOLE area of the map. You should be changing your overall scope and pace depending on your current mode of transport.

Personally, I think the game allows us to get around too quickly while walking. It makes the massive scale of Chernarus sort of trivial when you can run across it in 20 minutes.

One thing you have to remember is that players run fast.  I think around 18 kph.  That is really fast and the fact that players can run non stop makes getting across the map even faster.  If we had to actually walk, then it would take A LOT longer.

That's my point.

Sadly it was one of the reasons IIRC for not including player stamina in SA.

I think slowing the pace of the game down and making players take their time to forage, scavenge and survive on the go (instead of running 2/3/4 marathons a day) would improve the experience.

Certain things like grouping up after death or getting back to PvP would be more of a pain in the ass, but those aren't the gameplay elements everything else should be wrapping around. Far from it.

No more bikes. Segways would be much more common in Chernarus.

I agree on the walking-speed. 18km/h is too fast. usually its 4-6 in groups or 6-8 alone over long distances. (military experience)

Maybe if people moved slower they could finally start to enjoy the game. What's a big map good for, if you can travel through it within minutes?

Therefor. make it realistic. average speed down to 1/3. Humans have an avg. of 6000ml of Blood. Therefor 6000 Blood it should be. One liter a minute should be the max you can bleed, giving a minimum of 6 minutes to die unless vital organs are hit (head, heart, spine; keyword: doupletapping! ). Wikipedia states that a human can loose 20% of his blood before symptoms set in. at 40% loss shock sets in. This means, you could loose 1200 Blood, (4800 remaining) before having issues. Loosing 2400 would knock a player out. Dying still would take 3.8 minutes from there.

Given those settings. A life is much more valuable, a death takes much longer and gearing up is real work. -> KoS becomes a huge risk. "little effort - huge benefit"-types of gameplay would be less favored.

If you attack another player without fearing you might get killed yourself, PVP is too easy. Even a freshspawn who just found a makarov should be a threat, if you make mistakes (like running around spawn-area even tough your not a freshspawn anymore)

NO. Why? Because hat takes some of the nice elements out of Day Zed. Sure, it'd be funny to see a convoy of guys on bikes riding down the highway like Tour de France, but having everyone spawn with a bike would probably cause alot of rashing on the server, just make vehicles easer to find and easier to repair. (Not every car is going to be broken down) Lol joking. Sorry if I offended anyone...

I think that pink scooters fit perfectly.

I actually like running in dayz, dont know why. Bikes are cool aswell. More types of bikes maybe?

I like the long travel times. It doesn't add realism, fuck realism to be honest. Taking dumps and needing toilet paper so I don't get a disease? That part of realism adds absolutely nothing to what makes the game awesome. What long travel times add is tension. If I could respawn and quickly get anywhere on the map, the one thing that makes Dayz worth playing would disappear. Tension is why my heart starts pounding when I hear a gun shot or get surrounded by zombies. Why? Because I invested the time to get somewhere other than the coast and I don't want to lose that investment. Going black and white, getting a bandage on at <1000 blood, having a broken leg, blacking out every few yards and crawling halfway across the map was probably the most intense thing that has ever happened to me in a video game. The first few minutes pissed me off, but I will always remember that journey for the emotion that a damn video game made me feel. Having any, free transportation right at spawn would have made me pick a bush and suicide. Hungry? Screw it, suicide. Thirsty or infected? Screw it, suicide. Here lately it seems like a lot of people are doing that any way and hoping for the easy fix back to where their corpse is lying.

I think the real problem here is that Chernarus is currently composed mostly of empty space and forests, which means all points of interest and loot areas are very spread out. Simply fleshing out the map more, adding more towns, buildings, interesting sights, ect. will help with this. If there were simply more towns and interesting sights to go to, then you wouldn't have to spend the better part of an hour going from hot-spot to hot-spot.

So basically what I'm trying to say is that the reason we spend so much time running is because there's actually very little to run to. If every town has enterable stores, houses, and other buildings, then we're going to be spending a lot more time indoors.

Not spawn with a bike, but make em more common when they're put back into the game.

Just add more zombies... Heck a small horde of four zeds walking down the road could mean the player could either

> Kill them

> Hide from them

> RUN AWAY.

This would definately be a sort of distraction for players to reach thier goal therefore taking more time. So I think my Idea might help out here.

BECAUSE I'M TOTALLY SUPIRIOUR TO ALL YOU GUYS ON THE FORUMS!

I completely agree with what you say.  IRL no one runs all over the place.  They walk or jog.  In DayZ all you do is run, which is kind of silly.  If nothing was done to fix this, it wouldn't be a game breaker for me, but I would very much enjoy more walking/slower jogging.  Players should still be able to run quite a distance before becoming exhausted, but not as long as in the game.

I can't help but look at Stalker for this one.

In Stalker walking is slow.  You don't usually walk too much in the game unless you are in combat.

Jogging is the normal method of moving and is a realistic speed.  You are quicker than walking but no where near the speed of a full sprint.  You can jog forever in stalker unless you are carrying tons of gear.

And then there is sprinting.  You can only sprint for a minute or two in stalker.  You are much quicker than Jogging and walking but you can't do it forever.

WarZ did it wrong.  You could walk or sprint.  Walking was too slow and sprinting was too limited.  It was clearly an attempt to make the map feel bigger.

What I believe DAyZ should do is make jogging the main movement speed.  It should be slower than the current run but not unreasonably slow.  You should be able to jog forever unless you have tons of gear.  Walking wouldn't be required but it wouldn't be too much slower than jogging like the walk-2-run that is in Arma 2 now.  Sprinting would be the fastest but you could only sprint for about 4 minutes or so before becoming fatigued.  Four minutes is easily enough time to loose Zeds unless you are a terrible player, in which you deserve to become fatigued and be killed.

The Arma 3 system would be good.  The combat pace would be the norm.  The walk would be ...the walk.  And the sprinting in arma 3 is already limited so it could be tweaked and ported to DAyZ.

Nobody even mentioned Gas stations.  Stop trolling with all your casual-racism.  It is really unnecessary.  You don't see us making racist remarks against your country.  Don't make me report you.  This isn't the first thread that I have noticed you saying things that are racist to one group or another.

I'm sorry if you feel that what I commented is racist... I apologise, I may sound like I'm sucking up, but I realise that what I type might be offensive to some, thanks for setting me straight. Hey, maybe the fella I replied to was white? I'm white too, then if he's white then that's not racism. Oh fuck me.

Um, excuse me? I never said anything about Gas, or petrol. The way Americans twist stuff? I'm just pointing out that the only reason we have to run great, boring distances is because everything is spread out.

I don't see your point, or why you seem to be yelling.

Also, in case you didn't know, the word "gas" in American English is short for Gasoline, which IS a liquid. But that of course that is beside the point; I never even said the phrase "gas station" in the post you replied to.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gasoline

Gasoline /ˈɡæsəln/, or petrol /ˈpɛtrəl/, is a transparent, petroleum-derived oil that is used primarily as a fuel in internal combustion engines. It consists mostly of organic compounds obtained by the fractional distillation of petroleum, enhanced with a variety of additives.

The words you are arguing are synonyms.

i agree.

I hate walking.

I think there would be a unrealistic amount of bicycles laying round,

plus it means play safer if you don't want that long walk on the beach.

I think it weeds out all the 10 year olds that want to 360 quick scope n00bs off of cherno firehouse.

I've taken a shine to the public hive again, and have been avoiding vehicles. I've had more fun in the past few days sulking through the forest being a hermit, then I would blasting onto the airfield in a vehicle.

You also said it makes zombies less of a threat... wot? Even though they have been buffed in 1.7.7.1, they're still easy mode compared to what they should be.

I also feel walking is part of DayZ. Long treks through the forest, jogging along roads, that is what DayZ the mod it is, not the speeding around, outrunning zombies, and getting loot fast.

the chap is right about how boring it can be to walk from point a to point b but i believe that's what makes encounters with players/zombies alot more interesting.. is the "boring" time in between that is "travelling" makes those action parts all the more action packed...

This is kind of the point of DayZ. After all, adding +6 MPS to the current speed through a bike would equal this map being about... well.. uh..... 12% smaller? Iunno. Too lazy to math.

Very well put. Contrast in game play is very important. Besides, I consider the running to be akin to most MMO "grind."
