no Side chat = Community Growth will be damaged

Recommended Posts

without side chat it kills alot of the growth of the game and new players will be more frustrated without a channel to ask for help and meet new people

ive used side chat before to ask for help when im in the middle of nowhere when i was low on blood and could not see it made the game much more enjoyable you could meet people

now it feels like your playing a game with nobody who can speak english in it -.-

how are new players going to learn about the game alot of people who would play are going to give it up before they give the game a real chance now

Communication is important in online games

Mate sidechats been locked out for ages (AFAIK?)

And it should be, cos you know if your bleeding in a ditch you can't telepathically ask some guy halfway across the map to come help you, you'll die in the ditch.

COS THATS THE WAY ITS MEANT TO BE.

While I completely agree that communication -is- key to game communities, I feel that side chat detracted a lot from the experience of Dayz.

Instead of reintroducing a pervasive global chat, we would see alternatives such as radios in the future.

Short range communications between players need to significantly better, too. Better communication at face-level, that build up a very basic level of trust (E.g. Will this guy shoot my face off?) will prevent a lot of KoSing, and will slowly build a community through face-to-face interaction. This sort of community building would be far stronger than frail global chats that are prone to being trolled.

I'd like side chat back too. DayZ might as well be a single player game right now, and then I wouldn't have to spend half an hour trying to get into a server.

your playing a video game its not real life

do you want your character to sit there for 35% of your play time sleeping and sit there watching your character have to sleep as well?

people like you have no idea how to make games

Global chat is a must, IMO. The social aspect of the game was a blast. Now it's gone.

Press the period key to switch to Direct Communication, press the CAPSLOCK key near players and try talking to them. Make sure you're behind cover or else they'll shoot out of fear.

Voila, DayZ is no longer a singleplayer game. Side chat only helped noob bandits setup on a hill easier.

the first post has a point we were able to talk and ask for tips and stuff now it isn't like that.

But don't worry radios will be added in soon enough they said they were going to make ways to communicate in game. So for now think of it like this; we are in the DARK ages...lol

I would make or find #DayZ IRC channels based on time zone to meet people looking for groups.

Ham radio would be an awesome idea, though. Maybe using a radio is the same as voice chat but broadcasts to the entire city. Although since there's a limited number of radios in the city it also reveals your location to anyone who's memorized their locations. Something like that. I'll post it in the Suggestions forum. (EDIT: Never mind, that won't work. How the hell would people respond?)

If I remember correctly, Rocket has stated he doesn't care about metagaming (external maps, TeamSpeak, IRC, etc.)

Sidechat is optional through the mission file aint it? Not sure if owners/admins can edit that.

With the latest beta patch, I'm pretty sure side chat and all are gone. I'm also fairly sure it's client side, as people that didn't have the beta patch could use side chat, but those with it couldn't.

Precisely! Communications are important in-game which is ironically why the side-chat being removed is good.

Because the side-chat is counter-immersive and that chatting carelessly discourages players to actually socialize in CLOSE enviroments. The side-chat is no doubt one of the contributing reasons why banditry is/was on the rage.

Instead of asking over chat "How do I shot gun?" they could read the controls or maybe check a wiki? Why does everyone have to be lead around by the hand like a little child?

its far too easy to just shoot ppl than stand/crouch/prone there trying to type:

'hey mate, I'm friendly don't shoot!'

by the time that sentence is typed, your dead, looted and respawned back at the coast.

I like the no side chat. As for new players needing help and meeting people... If only there were some other way. Like a place online people could ask for help and meet each other. I dunno... It wouldn't have to be in game... Like, a website or something.

But seriously, doesn't the forum do everything you just complained about OP? Plus, with side chat gone, the game is much more immersive to me. How is constantly seeing FRIENDLY? on the side chat fun or helpful for anyone?

your a fool

if people dont want side chat a option should be there to remove it for that player

not the whole server most players enjoy global chat and will leave it on

It's not just for help. It's fun, you know, actually chatting with people. It was enjoyable talking about what's going on, how you just died, how you killed a bandit, etc. Global chat was a nice bit of MMO in this game and now it's gone.

Cause i would rather take 5 seconds and ask someone who most likely knows the answer instead of google for 5 minutes.

Exactly. If someone wants to go super hardcore and doesn't want chat, then just let them turn it off. Let the rest of us who aren't anti-social still have global chat.

And you call him the fool...what you just explained is called unfair advantage...if the way you just stated was implemented then no one would want to have it off since they know others would have it on.

No i understand why dying alone in a ditch is an important part of a survival game.

No i do not 'want sleep', stop butting words in my mouth.

YOU HAVE NO IDEA HOW TO MAKE GAMES.

Cos your idea for a survival game is 'ohnoez i am shoted, 'opens magic telepath chat' please bringz me bloodz' FUCK OFF quite frankly.

Except the people who want it off would be stupid to turn it off because it's a valuable source of intel.

Then that's your choice. If you don't like chat, you probably want the disadvantage to begin with if you want the game to be that hardcore.

I agree that a global chat is a good thing (and should be called Global instead of Side Chat).

The learning curve on this game is already very high, this becomes frustrating for new players. If a new player can't figure something basic out (because lets face it the in game tutorials are junk) then they will not continue to play.

For instance when I first started to play I had questions that I couldnt figure out on my own so I tried asking in chat. However I didn't know which chat was the right one to talk in. So I would end up talking in Direct Communication and get no response because no one was around me. Switching channels took a while to figure out that Side Chat was the best option, because very often even when using side chat no one would answer simply because so many people playing don't want to interact with or help a new player. Its like they are afraid of this newbie suddenly going "Oh my god I know how to switch fireing modes on my gun" and then they magically are able to kill everyone.

Adding radios will NOT help the problem. In fact it will further complicate it. Because now a new player not only has to contend with not having a way of getting simple advice, but they also have to figure out that they need to find a radio in the first place and then figure out how to use it once they get it.

Honestly radios should not work as a "talk to the world" type item anyway. It should instead be a "talk directly to this specific person, who also has a radio, without anyone else hearing it" type of item.

So in conclusion: Global chat helps new players learn and enjoy a game. Without it fewer new players are likely to stick with the game (I said fewer, not that no one would. It is a quantitative difference) because of frustration. More new players is a good thing, fewer new players is a bad thing.
