He gets a pass because the quote is from Lock, Stock.....unless it is from a movie about an ape living with a clean cut American family....

Really? This is the best you've got? If he'd said that they had reused all the old assets you'd be calling him out for doing that and taking the easy option.

Go troll somewhere else

If you don't like what I have to say then maybe you should troll somewhere else.

You say it would be 'taking the easy option'. I disagree. Taking the easy option is another way to say cutting corners. If they have the capacity to do better and choose not to, for gain, then that is cutting corners.

However, if the DayZ team used ArmA art assets then it would not be cutting corners because we have reason to believe that the art team for DayZ can not do better. Rocket's own words support this. He has deprioritized art in favor of game-play and corroborated that they don't have a fancy budget.

I ask again; why has Rocket decided not to use perfectly good art assets, including interface icons & textures, from ArmA?

...because the UI is different and the interface Icons won't work with the attachment system and they will have copyrighted cans....does that answer your question?

Some of the art assets in the SA are of generic brands and not the ones we see in the mod. A lot of the art assets are completely new because they don't exist in the mod.

I understand you like to be the devil's advocate (and we do need a few around here) but c'mon you are stretching it a bit now.

Part of it (my guess) would be to differentiate between the two.

I can't figure out why anyone is excited about playing the Alpha. Have any of you ever actually played an Alpha? They are typically quite horrendous with lots of bugs and graphical issues. Even betas can be pretty bad. You shouldn't expect to get the alpha and actually have something worth playing other than helping to debug. The only thing I care about is the final release of the standalone.

Have you ever played DayZ ?

I agree.  I'm hoping that over time the big cities will become so riddled with disease that only geared up players will dare venture there.

Yeah this worries me actually, I want to play in a Zombie Holocaust where the main Problem is first the threat of Zombie, then Humans. If we are playing the part in game of lone survivors its not like 1000,s and 1000's are still alive to the point where these diseases can manifest

I imagine zombies would carry a lot of diseases that could be passed onto the player.

Rocket there was one thing i'm really really excited to know:

so... there is this possibility that you eventually will hold any item you want in your bare hands ingame right? did you say that?

so... there is this new thing with every item is an entity/object, which means you could add any property to any item at any time? is that right?

so.. you could add  a "damage" property to every item? you could, couldn't you?

so.. in let's say 2014( ;)) could we expect every item to be a weapon? (or at least as many as ther would be animations available; maybe also even "quick'n'dirty")...

Optimization is one of the most important aspects to us in developing the standalone. Previous assets were produced for a specific purpose, the ArmA2 series. An example is the zombies themselves, being composed of several different materials (in most cases, about 4 or 5). This places more load on the GPU. So we did new zombies custom designed for DayZ's specific needs.

In terms of anything going on the player, not only do we have a new skeleton (with new bone dimensions), but we also have a new clothing system. So that means that even existing assets would have to be remade to work on the model. A very talented artist is working on the player clothing, so to maintain the style we have been getting him to make nearly all of the clothing.

The items, similar situation. While I can make art assets, mine certainly are nowhere near the best, and we had access to a very talented artist who has worked on many very successful games. He is doing an absolutely standout job creating our inventory items. We felt the quality of the inventory items is very important, given that now the inventory is produced in 3D so the item needs to look good.

Weapons are also a complete overhaul, and require a great deal of work. In fact, currently I've gone back and been removing all our new weapons and just focusing on the new M4 we have with it's attachments, because the new system is such a great change we need to standardize the way we deal with the new weapons and iron out issues before adding others.

I hope it's not holding the release back. I'm perfectly happy with just a M4 for release :)

Off-topic, but I was wondering if there has been any news on how the disease function is going to work? Is there going to be a generic, uniform spread of infection that is mirrored across all the seperate servers, or will each server have its own unique spread of disease?

No idea mate.  I think that's something being worked on further down the road, I might be wrong though.  It's actually one of the things I'm most excited about because if it's even close to the way it was initially described it's something that no other game has ever come close to trying.  I also think it has the potential to be one of the new gameplay aspects that change the way people play DayZ the most.

Disagree could be a Game breaker . As most people only Live for an Hour or so in DAYZ ( yes I know Ive had Characters for weeks also ) it may be adding something that's not ever even encountered by the majority.

Clue me up please Rockett , In the SA when do you propose the Zombie Outbreak happened ? Are we spawned into something that is just happening ? Happening right now makes sense would explain Food and Drink laying around in Buildings etc, a general state of Chaos . But if all ( Most ) Vehicles in the SA are all Burnt out, Trees and Weeds are overgrowing Buildings and many other tell tale signs , rusted Ship Wrecks etc this leads me to believe we Enter the SA months after the Initial Zombie Outbreak. So to me atm it looks like we have a mixture of the Two . Any plans to create this back Story ?

I guess any new mechanic could be described as a potential gamebreaker, it all depends on how they go about it.

One thing I'm sure of though is that DayZ needs more depth and more for the player to consider in terms of long term survival.  It's one of the main things missing from the mod IMO.  Currently the actual survival elements of the game are very shallow due to the mod restrictions.

Players that die every hour won't need to worry about it so much but there's many players who love to see how long they can stay alive, for many that was the initial draw of the mod.  I'm sure there are many players that may view it as "too much" but if I'm brutally honest I'm not sure the initial concept of DaYz was aimed at those players anyway.  The thing that made DayZ famous/infamous was the fact that it was a brutally hard survival game.

I'm pretty sure it's a minority that plays this game as a deathmatch and doesn't care for dying, but I might be wrong. You got to take into account the players that suicide to get a better spawn and such.
