Stripping down weapons.

Recommended Posts

Just had an idea of making weapons take less space in your inventory (bags) and weapon degradation.

What if you made it possible to dismantle a weapon making it into 4-5 pieces instead of one big, non-fitable, gun to put in your backpack.

Scenario: You've got an AK-47, and you find another AK/M16 etc. Then it would be very realistic and usefull to be able to dismantle one weapon to make it take less space like: full weapon = 10 slots & dismantled weapon 6 slots). If you'd be to combine the weapon again it would take around 50 seconds or something like that (I know by being a professional military that you can do it alot faster, but everyone is not).

This would also add to weapon degradation... If one part of the gun is being weared out you could easily change for example the barrel. Here you can take crafting into account. Like putting "weapon cleaning kit" on top of a gun part it would put it back to "clean" state or something.

That's actually not a bad idea. I know they're making weapons modular to a point in the SA, so something like this would be a nice addition, and probably not too hard to implement. As long as they don't make them decay insanely fast like they did in Far Cry 2, this could be a good idea.

I can't see an AK being worn down to the point that a piece of it has to be replaced. An AR on the other hand...

Not even that...they shoot until the grooves are gone then get another one lol. The AK has a pretty thin barrel so that would be worn out by time, too. They just don't replace it like a person with a western gun would who is "obsessed" with accuracy. It doesn't make a difference anyway if you saw the typical AK user shoot... The RPK or PKM on the other hand would have sturdier barrels, they were made for sustained fire.

If you could take a gun apart i would take out the bolt carrier assembly and throw it somewhere never to be found...not to grief but to reduce the amount of weapons that could be used by an idiot pk.

I like this idea. I think if they included dismantling the weapon then you should be able to find weapon components in industrial and military spawns like barrels, receivers (uppers and lowers) and stocks. Only problem I would see is they may have to model some new stuff.

Also it would be nice if you could shoot someone gun and it would do damage to the corresponding part of the gun, possible stopping the gun from working. I would imagine this would be quite hard to implement in game, but I think it would be a nice addition to the game.

Dean said it cannot get this complex

awhile ago

but that might change who knows

Great Idea, The inventory system for the SA would probably be fully capable of supporting this so I suppose there are only two issues between this post and it going into the game.

First issue would obviously be that they haven't thought of this idea(or seen this post) or don't want it due to it's complexity.

Second issue would be the additional development time for individual weapon parts, each part would need a 3D model.

It's definitely been brought up. I vaguely remember Rocket saying, when talking about weapon degradation, it probably wouldn't be so in-depth as to have folks disassembling weapons or replacing parts.

The weapon models are being redone from scratch for DayZ, but I don't think they're being designed with field-stripping in mind.

It'd be a good addition but I wouldn't be surprised if it's left out, for the sake of simplicity.

The problem with this is, if you have a gun that isn't designed for this (i.e. an AR-15 as opposed to a Ruger 10/22 Takedown) and you are just taking it apart and throwing it in a backpack you would most certainly lose the pins that hold the upper and lower together.
