Why do we need fancy new features anyways?

Recommended Posts

The core gameplay is solid as it is, it feels real and it is the one of the only games out there that makes you care (initially, anyways), and for experienced players there is that neverending sense of adventure and freedom not present in many games, I don't see why we need any more big features, all I want is more polish.

Because if it had no new features, then there would literally be no point to releasing the game, and the mod would be stuck in alpha forever? It would essentially be saying "Hey, I see you like the free DayZ mod, but how about you give us money and buy the exact same mod as a 'game' for literally no reason?"

Hello there

I understand the OP's sentiments but as Rage points out if the SA was merely a polished version of the mod there would be little incentive for many to purchase it.

New features can be good ... it's just growing pains, and in DayZ, there's plenty of Tylenol to go around. I say pour some more water on the grass and stand back!

I don't think new features will be EA/Big Hollywood Movie Producer type of features.

They'll be new features that will enhance upon the game you actually enjoy now.

Let's raise a glass to the SA!

I want more polish and more content. More zombies with better AI (how hard is zombie AI...zombie has to do two things - wander aimlessly and run straight at anything it sees and hears and kill it). More buildings to enter. More variety of stuff couldn't hurt. More and better interaction with the environment. Maybe put more stuff in the vast stretches of wilderness between points of interest.

Do you not want some sort of aim after getting good gear.

A good player can go north and be setup within 3 hours. After that what do you do? You can only pitch so many tents.......

^^Good stuff, bfisher

However, I am not convinced that DayZ was or is intended to mimic precisely a zombie apocalypse movie or other piece of genre fiction. Don't get me wrong, I love it, but it seems more focused on the post apocalyptic road warrior content with human interaction post end of world rather than purely on zombies. Still waiting for that pure zombie horror goodness in online gameplay. One cannot however beat DayZ at the moment.

The OP still hasn't said what new features he's talking about...

Some new (or proposed new) features I do not want to see or think unnecessary, others sound like they need work and others sound completely great...

I can't just make a blanket statement on "new features" though.

Well the personal outpost thing sounds unnecessary as gear is easy to obtain if you know where to look.

What I do want is a more polished zombie spawn system, rather than simply having them appear out of thin air, why not make it so that zombies actually roam around the map in hordes heading for high aggro regions (noise).

Aren't the zombie spawn mechanics being completely rewritten?

I think all zombies spawn at server start and if you clear and occupy an area, zombies can't spawn on you. We're getting more features, more refined mechanics, so they are harder to master and understand. We're getting Chernarus redesigned, because we know all the loot spawns. We're getting new zombies, because they were harmless if you were close to a tree or a building. We're getting new gear, because everyone running around with a sniper rifle made gameplay and player encounters very predictable.

If you don't want new features, stick with the mod :)

Mods like Origin already have more features than expected from Standalone initial release, the only thing I'm really expected is hacker protection from new client-server architecture I just tried playing on public hive again and guess what - server nuke in under 20 minutes :(

If the game goes too long without something being brought in, people would start to get bored and loose intrest because DayZ had been out for a while.

Just like any running franchise or series, new features are added every year, as well as some shiny new paint job.

Can polish the mod as much as you want. Polish a turd, it's still a turd. Not that I'm saying the mod is turd.. But you get my point!

Don't know if I would consider this a new feature, or "polish", but in 3-4 weeks of playing, PvE-type servers are non-existant -- mainly due to the terrible zombie AI.

How hard is it to run into the next building, or up a few stairs and pick off the 2-3 zombies that are left chasing you with your sidearm? Or -- run into a pine tree, and forget all about your zombie problems. Zombies not being able to run indoors? Why exactly? If they have a straight line to you there's no reason they shouldn't be closing the distance just as fast as if you were outside.

It makes the PvE aspects not very challenging, and it's why I feel a lot more people become bandits, or engage in PvP. If people were a little more concerned about zombies, I think people would be more inclined to team up for survival purposes. Since surving zombies is way too easy, people start to engage in PvP for something to do.

I want fancy new features because frankly, no matter how much fun the mod has been and still can be, it's still has very extremely shallow gameplay once you know what you're doing. I want hardcore indepth survival added to the game. It hasn't really even been approached in the mod and that alone would add an entirely new play style for people to choose from. I want hardcore zombies as well. I want to shit a brick when I see one coming at me. I want to see stealth added back to the gameplay. I like the idea of having to search everywhere for loot rather than a corner of a room. I want players to be an equal threat as the environment. Right now that is severely lopsided towards players and the mod becomes a massive deathmatch.

There's a lot that can be improved and that's why I'd hate to see a "polished" mod with a price tag.

hopelessly terrible zombie AI.

currently the worst part of the game.

Mods like origins may have more features but Rocket and his team pretty much redesigned the game engine and optimized it for Dayz. Does origins have thousands of zombies spawned at once? They made a new in inventory system as well.
