Holding a key to raise weapon? Your thoughts

Holding a key to raise weapon? Your thoughts

  1. 1. Should we have to hold a key to raise a weapon?

Although it might slow down senseless killing i don't like the mechanic in any game... OFP 2 had it ( well it was a bad game anyway ) but is is disturbing if you have to watch a corner and have to keep the button pressed all the time.

It basically depends on how you see the game.

If your view of the game is, aiming to shoot another player, I understand why you dislike it.

If your view of the game is looting and casual player encounters, you'd have to like it, because you'd have to know that the always-raised weapon makes it very difficult to trust someone at the moment.

And other than the Cod-fanbase in dayZ, rocket as well as a solid base of the players, want a survival game. Not a first person shooter.

In the Aspects of Standalone being supposed to finally be that, not a military simulation, having to raise your weapon like you would have to in real life, is a very interesting option.

I personally hope, that the second batch of high-powered weapons like m4 and ak will take it's time after SA comes out. So I get the time to play the game, before all the bonerbandits come back again...

It basically depends on how you see the game.

Depends on the game, it can work both ways. While playing Hitman Absolution with a gamepad you have to hold down LT to aim and you can even "squeeze" the trigger, a feature i was really surprised with since nobody ever used it before which shows me at least the guy who added this feature could be a trained gun user or at least knowledgable. And this game is surely a "killing game".

In the end it depends on the player, some day they will find out a way ( maybe even earlier using macros ) to bypass this system.

While the feature of holding to aim well thought out i think it will be outwitted by players in the future if not even given up by the devs if there is enough resistance. My game style won't change that much anyway since i'm not the one who starts a fight in the first place, it always depends on the player in the end as i already mentioned above...

Pretty confused...

- Why press a button, can't the weapon default in the down postion and L and RMB make it raise up? OR the right mouse button OR another key toggles it on/off

-This "key" already exists? I dont see anything wrong with double tap control, i always press it.

-How is the "new" button/stance any different from the raise/lower weapon function we currently have?

- How did it work to those that tested it...? (did i read that someone did)

Having to press another button to always raise a weapon is a hinderence, not something i want. If you can toggle the mode to be passive in the background and always on, so when you stop spriting your will either be ready to raise or lower your weapon per what you prefer. This negates having to essentially press the mouse twice too attack. An unfiar dissadvantage if you are ambushed OR setting one.

The feature is a good idea, implementation is the key. I always go.around with a lowered weapon. You'd be suprised how people react (or rather how they don't)

Old is permanent lower / raise, new is temporary raise to prevent kills on sight. Won't prevent it imo since the old system with lower / raise weapon can be used, too if the players are willing to not kill each other on sight.

Maybe make it so it lowers automatically after you start running, but only running, not walking.

Like when you climbed a ladder, you weapon is auto lowered (don't know if this is supposed to or not).

So when you stop running, you weapon is lowered by default, and you can raise by pressing the 'Fire' button. (left mouse)

Advantage is you don't need an extra key bind. And just keep the option of the manual lowering by double tapping ctrl.

I actually quite like the idea.

It'll be a bit of a pain when you get stuck into a proper firefight, but I think it'd definitely be worth implementing even just for an experiment.

For anyone who's wondering how it will work. If you happen to have Arma 3 or Arma 3 lite, go into control options>Infantry movement and delete the C key from combet pace toggle. Then add the C key in combat pace and press OK. Now you have to hold C down to aim.

Putting it on toggle kind of defeats the purpose, don't you think? That would barely change anything.

I think it's a brilliant idea.

Going around constantly with gun drawn properly is very taxing, even lighter rifles for short periods of time give you a nice ache in your arms if you are constantly aiming.

People are complaining that it would slow down firefights? Good. It's meant to.

People are complaining it's a hindrance? Good. It's meant to be.

I can imagine it working very well, especially if you get caught be surprise you'll be at a real disadvantage compared to just doing a quick swivel round and emptying a mag into them.

I cant wait to see the influx of "WHY IS EVERYONE SHOOTING ME WHEN I HAVE MY GUN DOWN" threads.

I think by making the gun lowered by default, and by making the player have to actively engage a aggressive stance, it gives players a means by which they can form a quick opinion on what another players intentions may be.

With this proposed system you will know that if you see a player with their weapon raised they are fully aware of what they are doing, they are being actively aggressive. Where as if you toggle stances you are in effect being passively aggressive (if that makes sense :P ).

After some time I voted no. If you HAVE to do it im not for it. So long as you can toggle it. ArmA is flexible, usally allows toggle on and off. Holding something down you want to be constantlly raised up is annoying.

I use that for sprinting ..

I can think of no button, that would not be a total pain in the ass to use, cause all the good ones are allready in use

I think it would help me to identify a hostile target out of a friendly one. There might be some shootouts where you suddenly raise your weapon, but that just makes it way more interesting.

not necessarily think if the weapon drops again after a minute if you have not fired or or iron sighted and drops when you run

thats workable and would be much nicer than holding a button

While the feature of holding to aim well thought out i think it will be outwitted by players in the future if not even given up by the devs if there is enough resistance.

Even if they macro around it, their weapon is visibly up all the time. Players that don't engage, have it visibly down.

If you see someone running around with his weapon in aim all the time, it's a lot more information than it is now.

I would not mind if there was no cross-hair and I had to aim all the time shooting.

I think it could work, and is certainly in-line with increasing authenticity/realism. As noted keeping a weapon constantly at the ready is not necessarily easy. What about making the effect of the keybind depend on movement status:

When stationary tapping the key would be a toggle.

When starting to move your weapon is automatically lowered. This could have a traveling rule where you get 2 steps to adjust your position before your weapon is automatically lowered.

While moving at a walk you can keep your weapon up by holding the key.

i like this, this would be a very workable system. when you stop and want to look around or are waiting in ambush you just tap, but if you are creeping up on someone and want the drop on them while moving you have to hold

this is the best suggestion so far

It wont make a difference if they simply copy a mechanic from a game like Vietcong. Holding right mouse, raises your weapon to your shoulder and this operation happens as good as instantly, so there'd be no actual delay between raising the weapon and firing, you just press the two keys at once, which means you're still only one action away from firing and because of that, all players are perceived as a threat, even the ones with lowered weapons.

Right now in ArmA, there's still a short delay, when you raises your rifle to your should, to you acquire the sights and can fire, I think that's really enough. There's not need to change the controls, just the default stance. Maybe only allow "hold breath" in prone, but in all other stances allow a similar mechanic, where as soon as you raise the rifle to your shoulder or stretch out your arms with a handgun, you slowly begin to lose accuracy over time, so players are forced to rest their arms once in a while, unless they are prone.

Also allow us to shoulder our rifles, holster pistols, so we're be able to use our arms to full effect while sprinting, potentially increasing our speed and maybe prolong our stamina while jogging. People might start traveling in less threatening postures, instead of as now, where anyone you see, is pointing the muzzle of a weapon at your head simply by default.

Maybe add a few DayZ related loading screen tips:

"If you say "friendly" from a position where you can't shoot or get shot, strangers are less jumpy and no one gets accidentally shot."

"Being friendly, doesn't mean bullet proof. Trust is good, cover is better. Build trust from behind safe cover."

"Never point your weapon at someone you want to make friends with, you're both only an accident away from shooting."

"Anyone with a raised weapon is ready to shoot, anyone ready to shoot is dangerous."
