[SA] Infected Melee Weapons

Recommended Posts

While I do support some variety of the DayZ Infected I sometimes wonder if they have some intelligence to use crude clubs. It has been recorded that some animals will use items and objects in the world to help them achieve their own goals, primates for example are notorious for using sticks to bash open fruit.

I'm not suggesting they use firearms, but simple clubbing weapons or some simple bladed weapons. Maybe before they were infected they didn't just drop everything, maybe through some forgotten memory or showing a simple line of intelligence they picked up something to use as a weapon besides their own two hands.

It gives more variety to the infected and possible showing an increased danger amongest them

It would also kinda give them more of a "infected" feel as well, showing that the infected still posses some intelligence, despite their inherent rage induced sickness.

Some examples of weapons carried by infected include:

  • Sticks
  • Bottles
  • Rocks
  • Metal Pipes
  • 2x4's
  • Crowbars
  • Small Baseball bats/cudgels/batons
  • Kitchen Knives/Hunting Knives
  • Combat Knives/Machetes/Hatchet (One Handed)
  • Various farming hand tools
  • Scissors
  • Broken debris (Glass, broken furniture etc)

EDIT:

On an additional note, weapons can be scavenged from these infected, however with the new disease system implemented in the Standalone, the chance of getting a disease from an infected civilian after taking his weapon would be just as high as taking an infected persons clothes or more if the weapon can be used for another purpose (such as a hunting knife, tainting any meat it touches)

It would be interesting to see a military infected using it's AK-whosa-whatsit as a club

ehhh, maybe they just kept what ever they had in there hands like a death grip when they where infected, like, mil zeds try to beat you to death with a gun, or shoot you with a knife lol, SOME memories of former life like that would be good, like mil zeds trying to take cover under fire by hiding behind a cartoonishly small bush/ tree

I personally prefer the animalistic feel to the infected. Like they are unable to unbuckle themselves from their car seats, they should not be able to use any weapons, even the crudest. Anyway, it would be awkward to lunge and parry with an infected.

I'd prefer if they didn't have weapons, but it's not a bad suggestion. Giving them primitive weapons would make it seem like I was fighting a bunch of cavemen. I think they need the ability to grab hold of players.

I actually wouldn't mind a rare zed or two swinging an axe or whatever. It would definitely add to the tension if you turn around and see a screaming zed running at you swinging an axe wildly above his head.

But like you said, definitely no guns.

At most, I'd say maybe an permantly broken gun, because I'd imagine a zed running after you, using a rifle as a club is gonna be broken after a few swings, rendering it useless. But yes I also agree with you, armed Infected should be rare but add that little bit of danger and variety!

What if the rare zombie had angel mans syndrome (Not being offensive here). I mean a stiff running zombie with a creepy smile while holding an axes would be scary for sure.

DaveZ would have a ball with that comment.

Well Rocket has said numerous times he basicly based the Infected off of "28 Days Later" infected, so i would say no.

They will kill you with brute force, not weapons.

It just doesnt fit into the story at all tbh, coz using weapons = having the ability to actually think and make decisions.

As far as im concerned the Virus makes them react on pure instinct and they dont think about anything really.

So no from me :)

This.

Although it would be cool to see some rare military zeds with a weapon hanging of its belt, or some polices with the radio being dragged through the floor, with the weapon holstered...

It would obviously need an adjustment to fit the loot tables.

You are on to something there.

Insted of infected with weapons in theyre hands, make the weapons "hang" on the body, like the infected doesnt even care about it.

That way you could actually end up having to kill infected because of the weapon they have hanging on them :)

Good idea tbh.

Aww i thought you meant infecting your melee weapons with poo, rust, crud, dirt, blood, etc... then meleeing somebody knowing that they could die a horrible death if you fail to kill them before they kill you...as for smart zombies wielding X item? It never has sat right with me...day of the dead kind of pulled it off but ive not seen it anywhere else...and i don't want in for dayz, sorry :)

then i read this, pictured it and thought it was kind of cool

so in a limited way i guess maybe!

Player are immune to the Virus, according to Rocket, so infected weapons wouldnt make you die faster.

Unless we think about stuff like blood poisoning, tetanus, inflammation and gangrene, from getting hit with a dirty melee weapon.

Which could introduce a whole new lvl of gameplay really.

But the virus it self does nothing to the player, we are immune :)

Im still gonna have to say no to any kind of infected wielding weapons. Just doesnt fit tbh :)

But you would drop it when you die tbh. Especially of your beaten to death by infected or shot by a player.

I just cant see how people realisticly could hold on to a weapon, when they turn to infected.

Using a simple weapon isn't that much bound to a choice making, in other words thinking. For example: how often do you see films where someone instinctly grabs a weapon to bash up / kill another one?

It's true though the zeds are based on the 28-days-later-ones. So I think at least for the beginning that's kind of unlikely to happen that zeds will be swinging around their axe, whisky bottle or whatsoever. But nice idea, I'd really like to see that implemented in some way.

Well lets take an example.

Did you at any point in either "28 Days Later" or "28 Weeks Later" see any infected using any kind of weapons?

I didnt, but i might be wrong here, cant remember it that well.

What i mean with "choosing to use it" is, if the Infected is driven by pure instincts, what in the world would cause them to grab something around them insted of simply running straight for the human and beating him up?

Im having a hard time seeing how an Infected would actually think about weapons and how to use them, when they just want to kill you as fast and as brute as possible.

You do need somekind of thoughts when using a weapon, sure humans do it almost automaticly, but they still need to actually think to do it.

Im my world an Infected doesnt think about anything tbh.

They are empty shells, using nothing but pure destruction instincts to kill anything that looks remotely human around them.

EDIT:

Ok i take it back, found this:

For example, the infected Donald Harris was shown to be able to manipulate such simplistic objects as blunt-force weapons.

Source: http://28dayslater.w...ki/The_Infected

So i guess it is possible tbh, it kinda depends on how close Rocket want to keep it to "28 Days Later".

i meant, like, they INSTINCTIVELY continue to clutch what ever was in there hands when they where infected, like a rifle or wiskey bottle or purse, and then beat the crap out of you with it

Am I the only who misread the title and thought he was talking about a disease infected hatchet? Because I don't think that would be all too bad, poisonous weapons have been used for ages.

Ofcourse, when you're swinging the old hatchet, you're usually trying to kill someone but say you cripple them then you also give them a disease and run away. They shouldn't be aware of it instantly but it should set in gradually.

Nope, I assumed that as well. I think that would be an unnecessary detail, poison weapons are usually only used in assassinations or when the weapon itself isn't powerful enough to kill outright, i.e. sumpitans, etc.
