The switch from console to PC

Recommended Posts

Good evening one and all,

On the 28th I shall be ordering my first ever gaming pc. Up until now I have blindly wandered in the shadows of console gaming. Forgive me for my sins, etc and so forth. It really is all BF3's fault.

I have saved up all my pennies and am spending a hefty chunk of lettuce on getting this PC. The primary motivation behind wanting one is simply...DayZ. Thanks to the videos of Frankie, Jackfrags, BRT TRP and the likes of such calibre gamers...you have induced me with an unwavering need to own and play this game. As of the 28th, phase one of my plan will be complete. Phase 2 - download and play DayZ will initiate and drop my innocent Xbox soul into the harsh and unforgiving reality of this incredible looking game.

I would like to say your forum looks great, and will no doubt be of much help to me in my first tentative steps into Chernarus. For me, the shift to PC seems almost cosmological and I am a little nervous, but also anxious to get started. If anyone has any tips or advice they could give to me as a non pc player, it would be greatly appreciated.

Goose

You wont be disappointed. I switched from console within the last year completely after getting a friends old PC never been happier with arma2/OA/Dayz and the other numerous games I've been playing. Welcome and have fun takes a bit to get used to but ultimately you will be happier I still use my xbox controller to fly in game though ;) works wonders.

hi I made the change some years ago just to play Rome total war and I am upgrading mainly for dayz (it needed ti but dayz gave me the push)

you want some tips so hear goes

1. DO NOT cheep out on a mouse, a poor mouse will affect gaming in comfort, lifespan and response times I tried a lot of mice when i started (mainly because they broke) and have settled on an MSI G series for £25 ( I have a low budget) and i love it, but the £20 mice i tried broke quickly and where nowhere near as good

£5 more can make all the difference

so try to get a gaming mouse

2. get on steam ASAP http://store.steampowered.com/ its free (you install in the top right of the web page) to quote PC Gamer magazine "steam IS pc gaming"

lots of games, often well cheep with daily, weekend, midweek and holiday sales

plus you should join there forums they helped me SOOOO much when i started out

3. get Minecraft

4. one i have come across with several new pc gamers. NEVER buy a steam based game on disk second hand inc empire/shogun 2 total war, counter strike, half life, killing floor (among others) once a game is tied to a steam account it CAN NOT be used by anyone else

lots of new pc gamers get ripped off like this

5. get a mic is make gaming much more fun and easyer and is a MUST HAVE for Dayz

add me to you freinds list on hear and then i can add you on steam when you get you're pc (i beleave you can join steam on you're xbox) i will be happy to help you out anytime

Switching from a console to a military simulator like ARMA 2 is one hell of a leap.. Just saying.

Don't get put off by the amount of controls there are. You won't need that many of them to actually play effectively.

Welcome to PC gaming.

Expect to spend half what you've just laid out on your new PC every year in upgrades.

It'll be worth every penny.

People buy ArmA II OA for the DayZ mod, now this guy buys an expensive gaming PC JUST for DayZ, oh god Dean!

First and foremost, prepare to get your ass handed to you, a lot. If you want to be competitive, do yourself a favor and never use a controller for shooting. If you haven't spent time allowing your muscle memory to learn where the cross hair goes based on your mouse, I would seriously recommend a game like Counter Strike Source or Black Ops 2. Fast respawns and you don't lose your beans when you die. Games like this will allow you to learn your mouse and help you out tremendously. Dayz usually starts you out without a gun. By the time you get one, you will not want to lose it during your first encounter so I would seriously recommend getting another twitch shooter, (maybe even a free one), just to get comfortable with the mouse and keyboard set up.

If you game a lot, don't buy wireless. Its higher latency might get you killed and even the best gear costs more and comes with the hassle of changing out batteries.

And finally from me, get Dayz Commander. It simplifies installing Dayz and all the other maps and people I know that have used it seem to have a hell of a lot less issues than the few I know that run Dayz from Steam.

Welcome Firstly to Gaming via PC and secondly to Dayz

My tips would be find forums for whatever games you plan on playing and frequent them! You'll meet awesome people and get pro tips. And also STEAM. I would also suggest League of Legends and Team Fortress 2. Both of them are Free to Play and amazing games that are easy to get into but offer a lot in return.

Secondly Disregard anything about upgrading your pc every year. Unless you plan on playing the newest Crisis on ultra you should be fine for at least 2 to 3 years I can play everything on High on my PC (sadly my laptop is out of date by far)

Thirdly, for the love of all thats Holy get a headset with a microphone, you will have so much more fun and the game will be far better.

I made the switch not too long ago myself. 1994 to be exact. Doom 2 made me do it. That 75mhz Pentium with 8mb's ram, an 856mb HD, 14,4k modem and 2mb 3D card made me the envy of everyone.

I started out on PC, then had to move back to console during the years when PC hardware was accelerating at a crazy rate as I couldn't afford to keep up. Then I got a laptop which allowed me to go partially back to PC gaming although with the more demanding games having to be bought for console.

Then this year I finally came home - I finally got the money together to get a decent gaming PC, and I haven't so much as touched the console since. I have nothing against console gaming, but in my experience, the PC gaming experience is an all-round better one - more control, more variety, and fewer complete idiots.
