Ethics of the common player

Recommended Posts

I was playing as a fresh spawn today. I was in a hero skin and i was unarmoured and had nothing of value on me.

I got shot 2 times within 10mins.

Why do people play DayZ like it was call of duty?

Why do people feel the need to shoot a player who cannot harm oneself?

And what is a hero skin worth if you get shot on sight regardless?

I'm not saying you shouldn't play as a bandit. They are what makes this game good. Just be reasonable.

This is just written in a hope that just some default skin players would consider keeping their hands of the trigger and just think for a sec.

Hopefully players will have changed their play style when the standalone comes.

Cheers!

Seems to me it takes hours to get much done in game. Im not saying gearing up but setting up camps and repairing helis or cars.

That said I think they are alot of players who don't have time to play that way. So instead they just murder anyone they see as they have a short time to play and need to make the most of it while they can.

I mean if I only have two hours to play am I going to spend that time hiking through the hills to the north or just hit up the firestation and murder everyone. Obviously teaming up is no option as who wants to team up with someone who only will be on for a moments at a time.

The problem you speak of seems to me to be a problem with casual type gamers. Not your everyday players. Well atleast not most of them... If you want to avoid theses types then avoid those spawn pvp areas. It won't always keep you from trouble but If you don't want casual cal to shoot you in the back than avoid the high traffic area as obviously those with limited time are going to go to the easiest hunting grounds.

Also I do believe with the addition of high value loot spawns in new places the standalone should fix many of these problems. I mean atleast casual cal will have to decide which pvp area to go to thus lowering your odds of running into him. Until then I suggest finding a whitelisted server not only for the hacking protection but as the players are more serious and willing to atleast have the balls to talk to you before they blow your guts out your ass for your beans.

A hero skin isn't a guarantee for anything, only thing I can tell you: Don't stand still or exposed when you meet a stranger.

Yeah, but still where's the sport in shooting unarmed players?

And I want to interact with players (it isn't fun as a singleplayer game) and that means entering those zones.

Hmm. Maybe I should try to find a decent whitelisted server and bring my squad there.

I know, but sometimes you can't avoid players.

I just don't get why people play this game instead of some shooter then. Kind of ruins the point of the game.

I always said to myself I will always try and chat before firing but since I picked up hard earned gear anyone with a semi auto rifle or better and I shoot first. I don't feel good about it but I guess it's the fear of losing my gear.

Rule 1 broken right? Don't get attached to your gear!

I don't trust anyone in-game anymore. That doesn't make me any less of a friendly though. I'm a very friendly player and try to avoid conflict at all costs. However, if you try to kill me, I will kill you. =| It's hilarious when people try to taunt you and then bitch and moan because you killed them instead in self defense.

And, um.. Like someone has already stated before: Don't get attached to your gear. Travel lightly too.

I assume you are just acting dumb and provocative there ;)

There are no shooters like dayZ, I enjoy the survival experience but at a certain point there's nothing better to do than go shoot fresh spawns or stop playing. I stopped playing. When I came back for more surviving I got killed by a hacker. I've gathered full gear with my friend at least 5 times and every time a hacker has ended us, it's not worth playing anymore. When we were playing we trusted no-one. I did meet a player once and didn't shoot because I only had makarov at the time and was trying desperately to find bandage for my bleeding friend, that was the only time I had any non-KoS interaction with other player than my friend.

True. But that can be defended as long as you do not shoot bambies or betray players. Once in a while you just gotta shoot some players for fun man ;)

Even bandits shouldn't kill fresh spawns, the point of being a bandit is to kill someone with loot, If you kill fresh spawn for fun you can call yourself dumb.

Interesting. I'd say that's a fairly good example of 'cause and effect' - you got fed up with getting hacked, so you figured that the best course of action was therefore to start shooting everyone else on sight? And now you're surprised that a large proportion of the people that you come across shoot you on sight? Assuming you play most regularly on a handful of servers, it's not unreasonable to assume that people are going to remember the guy who keeps on shooting them every time they bump into him and likely be only too eager to return the favour.

It's a vicious circle started by a small number of trigger-happy idiots and dedicated bandits, but perpetuated by people who decide that because the last two people they met shot them that therefore everyone is going to shoot them, and the only cure is to shoot first. Before you know it, everyone's so paranoid and fed up of being shot that they'll fire first just to be on the safe side.

I've met more 'friendly' players than I have players who've killed me on sight (defining 'friendly' as someone who has the chance to shoot me but elects not to) - a lot of the time it's simply about establishing communications clearly and early - if you jump out round a corner on someone, then don't be surprised if their reflex action is to pull the trigger, and I don't disagree with that. However, if you suspect you're about to cross paths with another player, it never hurts to call out 'friendly' and to make your intentions and upcoming actions (EG 'I'm now coming round the corner behind you, don't shoot') clear as early as possible. Sure, every now and then you'll get shot by someone too stupid to know any better, but you'd be surprised how often you'll just be carefully watched rather than shot.

Fresh spawns are unable to kill you no matter how much they would want to. Douche.

KoS irks me mainly because it ruins the potentially interesting player encounters you can have. Especially if you are a fresh spawn getting KoS. The fact that the majority of players have the same view point not to trust people on the mod nowadays they will go ahead and start shooting others straight away. I prefer to test the waters and try to have some form of interaction other than flinging bullets at one another. It's what makes the game so tense. Playing as a bandit is all part of the gameplay but I regard camping/killing unarmed players as the complete wrong way to go about it. A lot of people would say there is no wrong way to play but again it just all comes down to opinion. If I want full on PvP with no questions asked I go ahead and play Wasteland.

No such thing as a harmless player..

This newspawn I saw from half a mile a way doing a commando crawl on Kamenka was pretty harmless. For laughs, I snuck up behind him, pointed my shotgun at his head and was like "wasup?" over direct chat. Probably scared the crap out of him. Didn't kill him though.

-snip-

Me and my friend haven't had a lot of gunfights really. Usually when we saw someone it was NWAF or stary sobor- neither of those places are too uncommon. At that point it's usually ghillie or camo suit on both of us and assault rifle or better. The people we meet aren't there for their can of beans most of the time, if we see a ghillie dude with as50 sitting on a hill near stary sobor we wont take risks and start yelling friendly. Has happened multiple times. Only unarmed player we shot was heading for an AKM in stary sobor less than 10 meters from us even though we told him to stop. The firefights we found most dangerous were over vehicles. This one time we were ridin' our motorcycle in the northern wilderness between Petrovka and Gvozdno. We came across a fully fueled, 100% condition ural truck there. We started looking up what's in it and suddenly we see three dudes running towards us over a hill nearby. They didn't see us but they definitely saw and heard our motorcycle. We opened fire before they did as we were certain that they would not take kindly on us looting their truck and got all of them down with the cost of my friends life. It's that kind of KoS that we did, at that point it's not really where we want to risk starting all over again. We did not sit near NWAF or stary sobor camping, we pushed forward until we had everything there is to be had

Too many times we got shot as newbies because of our ignorance. The first time we got to stary we got shot by a guy we never even saw, and neither of us had had any guns at that point. Our first two trips to NWAF were lethal to us as well. It's about learning from your mistakes and taking minimal risks. Now when we need medical supplies one of us sits in the treeline with a high caliber sniper rifle and the other runs to berezino hospital, we KoS because we sorta have to. If someone did find us before we did, lowered his weapon and said he's friendly, we wouldn't shoot him back unless his group outmanned us. He would be no threat to us. It's just that rarely anyone sees us before we see him, and at that point it's too late for him if he has a firearm

Just my two cents on ethics in this game

Well, I would kill on sight almost any armed player I see, unless they for whatever reason have the chance to kill me and decide not to. However, I have only so far killed one person (turned out to be a bandit) and got a few shots off on some guys. It's the way I play, I move around a lot and rarely wait for players.

I guess I must be a bit of a dick though, since one time a guy found me, gave me an M9-SD, said thanks and just walked away.

To the OP: In all honesty, after 2 hours the survival-game is finished (the time required to get what you need and more, e.g. a military weapon) and then you could survive endlessly on an empty/low-pop server.

So in normal conditions (20-30 players) If you want to play friendly you must take in account you will die more easily because you risk more being friendly.

It all boils down to that. You will always find trigger happy players slaying bambies so just accept it: and if you die... Respawn and after 2 hours you are good to go. Smile (unless you spawn in Three Valleys).

I play friendly, only on private vanilla servers: 11 different games running in parallel, so far only one Avatar died (guess how? Not shooting first) and things are different from server to server, on some servers everyone chats about this and that, on others there is only silence and kills.

Just my two cents on ethics in this game

It's not my place or right to judge you based on the way you play the game, so please don't think I'm doing that when I say that this whole post is a pretty terrible justification for shooting everyone on sight.

So you got sniped at Stary and NWAF, the two most bandit-ridden places in the game (possibly excluding Elektro), and as a result, you now just blow away anyone you see on the pretence that what you're doing is justified because of that? Sorry buddy, but that just doesn't wash.

I don't disagree with your statement that the bush wookie with the AS50 on the Stary hill probably isn't looking for zombies, and that's not an unjustified kill by any means. I'd probably do the same, to be honest.

However, shooting someone in the back in a supermarket just because he has a gun and claiming it's pre-emptive self-defence is a load of rubbish. I don't have a problem with bandits, as they're honest about what they do and why they do it, and they provide flavour to the game. I just dislike the notion that some players have that 'you can't trust anyone' when they themselves are the reason for that mistrust.
