joeyslucky22 638 Posted February 5, 2013 So I started working on a bunch of 3D models of foods and smaller items after Dean had asked the community for some.I currently have about 50 models done and 10 textures and I really would love your guys' feedback on this before I continue. Here's one of the models I'm close to finishing (ignore the obvious double pop top):I'm thinking of making 6 different quality conditions for each of the food items I'm working on2 different models showing the item sealed / opened3 textures of quality (Clean / Dusty / Rusted)Clean - Safe to eatDusty - Low chance of illness after consumingRusted - High chance of illness after consumingI'm thinking the "dusty" quality items would be most common while the "clean" version of an item would be a rare find. Now I know Tin/Aluminum doesn't rust but.. Dammit if it doesn't look cool!I'm not sure what we could do with opened items (be it a can, bag, etc..)Maybe a higher chance of illness / lower amount of hunger restored when consumed?Maybe other players can contaminate "opened" food with poison, pills, their own illness, etc, and leave it for another player to find?Bonus "twinkie":Some canned food (completely made from scratch):also have different qualities:as per requested:Here are some soda cans:A few bottles & containers:Candy!Sulahoops:Beer Bottles:(Snoww made an advertisement! Awesome!)Vodka!:3/29/13 -Some new melee weapons / toolsThe ShovelLug Wrench (Tire Iron)Maybe have melee weapons turn bloody after killing a player with it?Only the rough base model of the baseball bat. Finishing the "nailed bat" and "barbed wire bat" this weekend2/20/13 - Finally got them working in-game! It's only a matter of time now...:I should have fixed my graphics settings before taking these (everything is on low) so I do apologize for that. These should give you some idea of the in-game look at least. Here is the normal (bottom left), nailed (top), and barbed wired (bottom right).I had some alpha issues but hopefully I'll be able to figure it out soon. But if anyone knows how to deal with the "ghost outlines" in arma 2 alpha textures, give me a holler! :)After I finish the admin food drive, I'll be texturing some "household" melee weapons and working on more interesting trash items like old stuffed animals, soggy boxes, crusty socks, etc., so we're not just finding empty cans all over the place. Thanks for all the support and feedback guys! I can't wait to share this loot with all of you :)old news:On another note:After a solid 10 hours of fiddling around with Blender, Oxygen 2 (BIs modeling program), and getting some excellent pointers from Elvaron, I've finally figured it out!If interested, here was my process (Just so I remember what I did and maybe it will help someone else out too):- Downloaded and installed BI_Tools_2.5 - http://community.bis...ki/BI_Tools_2.5 - Reset computer to find the new "P:/" drive- Create the 3D mesh in Blender - Unwrap the UVs and bake an ambient occlusion onto an alphaless 512 x 512 texture - save that texture- Create a diffuse map in photoshop - use the image from blender as a "multiply" layer above all texture work- Check out the final texture in blender and export the model as an .obj file - Make sure normals are facing the correct direction (outwards) - Include normals in the .obj export, exclude materials- Create textures for a "SUPER" .rvmat in Photoshop (diffuse, specular, normal, detail, ambient) - Coincidentally, I came across an old BI forum post of Dean's which helped me out a ton! Thanks Dean! :beans: - Manually create a .rvmat file to be used with O2 (can be adjusted later)- Import the .obj into Oxygen 2 - Master scale - 0.19 (this will need tweaking) - Invert X (or the UV will be flipped for some reason) - hit "E" to assign texture & .rvmat - Test it out on the bulldozer preview - Dig it? Cool, save that shit as a .p3dDONE! Now to test it in game... (this stuff I'm keeping vague atm.. IGNORE ME!)- github magic - Put that shit in the P:/dayz_communityassets folder - make adjustments to dayz_code - BinPBO it (not binary)- Drop it in /@DayZ (backup the dayz_code files first) - Run ARMA and press Alt + E at the menu to enter the dayz singleplayer mission editor and spawn stuff ( )(this may not all make sense at the moment.. currently typing this up at 5 am)The result:I only have the one can at the moment but man... does it feel good having finally figured it out :)

Oh wait...Yes, I'll definitely be posting more but first I'd love to hear your thoughts on the possibility of doing different "qualities" for each food item

mick17 93 Posted February 5, 2013 I like the different quality of items. Makes sense. The older the more disease that has been festering in the bowels of the can. <- (Definitely tried to make that as disgusting as possible :D) The models look awesome as well! Like if the can was in a backpack of a person who was shot and left in a swamp or something would be rusted, or a dusty can would be one that has been carried for a while or been left in a dry place for a long time.

sausagekingofchicago 4711 Posted February 5, 2013 I like it. :) I spent the weekend learning how to model and I have to say I dig your work. Did you use a specular map for the lid or a clever material? Now if only I can learn how to bloody unwrap my objects correctly. So many hotkeys... :)

Meeshe 170 Posted February 5, 2013 Those look great. I especially like the beat up looking, rusted cans. Just my opinion but I'd hope they add the same amount of health as the pristine looking ones. I mean they are sealed so... One thing I think it would be cool to come across an opened container and have to make a choice...Do I risk it and eat the opened can or pass it by. That and your suggestion about maybe peeps being able to sabotage opened cans get a  from me.
Meeshe 170 Posted February 5, 2013 O.K. I know its not original and terribly cliche but please, please can you make a twinkie model.

beastoverlord 574 Posted February 5, 2013 I think that if Rocket says that there will be different levels of food quality (which there probably will be) go for it! I really hope that you are able to put these models in the SA, they look great!
scoffield77@gmail.com 192 Posted February 5, 2013 Should be dog food, since dogs will be in the game ;)
IkaikaKekai 1957 Posted February 5, 2013 I'm pretty sure that canned food lasts 'forever' (depending on if it was sealed properly and if all germs were destoryed in the canning process). Long as the inside of the can is intact and the seal isn't broken the food inside should be fine/edible/disease free. (heard stories about researchers finding cans from like the 1800s, rusted to hell but still intact, opening it and the food was still good safe to consume) Now it could be explained by the cans in Chenarus being of lower quality materials or something (my dad used to work for a coke bottling plant, think he said they used to weld the cans, but after a while people started getting sick because of the flux used in the process)
