I really need to photoshop something soon. Lack of times makes it hard. Not that I use more than 5 minutes or anything.

Gimp 2.8

Layer=> Transparency

if you select colour to alpha you can pick a colour that you want to make transparent ie white

Now I'm just testing if I learned that. It was already transparent, but when I exported it to JPG, it got a white backround.

I think in Gimp you can choose when exporting to "preserve transparency" If you don't do that then alpha values (transparency) will show as white.

Edit, I think you've sussed it already ;)
