Dreygar (DayZ) 178 Posted November 9, 2012 This is supposed to be based on a military simulator? Well, we read maps from the left up (Find the left bottom corner, count the ticks to the right that would intersect with point. (Horizontal grid square + Ticks = First coordinate) Then count the ticks up (Vertical grid square + Ticks = Second Coordinate). Not from the vertical to horizontal.Example. In game Cherno hospital would show as grid coordinate 064125, though how the military and how maps are designed to be read is backwards. It would be 125064. A minor fix but should essentially be an easy one then.
mr_chabowski@live.co.uk 2416 Posted November 9, 2012 (edited) There should be different kinds of map in-game anyway. No chance every map in the country is exactly the same, there should be a range of maps, so you'll have to learn how to read them. Some maps might be really poor quality, without markers for altitude etc. Or maybe a road atlas with different areas on different pages.Brainstorm with it, I just think there should be more variety in all walks of DayZ. within reasonThe order you read the coordinates depends on you, I suppose, but wouldn't they still be written the same on the map? wolfstriked 143 Posted November 9, 2012 Hit M in game and your instantly backed out of game and the online map pops up. :P
DemonGroover 8836 Posted November 9, 2012 Also, slightly off topic, but there is a need to alter the fact you always know east-west because that's the way the clouds move. Surely the direction of the clouds can be randomised.

I mean you could brainstorm and say that if you had a notepad you could make your own map. (You just add to your notepad every time you find a location and it kind draws its own map) but yeah... I just want a simple fix.
mr_chabowski@live.co.uk 2416 Posted November 10, 2012 Improving the game should be the concern of every player. I found this relevant to your "map fix"*snip*but yeah... I just want a simple fix. There's nothing to fix. If you use Latitude and Longitude they represent a location, which is always at that location. If you want to read co-ords (Y, X) instead of (X, Y) you can, but you have to specify this, because everyone else does it the other way. Riem 164 Posted November 10, 2012 Military simulator implies you're simulating military activities.DayZ is currently a mod of a military simulator, and we should, with the standalone version, move towards thinking about making it more of a survival sim. Also, I'd like to see crudely drawn and bloodstained maps. Dreygar (DayZ) 178 Posted November 11, 2012 In any case... I think the map should be read correctly if it's going to use military maps, compasses, etc.
Michaelvoodoo25 3120 Posted November 11, 2012 Have a minecraft styled map, that way they are personal. When you come across a dead player (who hasnt been looted) you can see their map and sketch their info into your own!!!I have never had issues with reading any kinds of maps (But i am an ex squaddie)
mr_chabowski@live.co.uk 2416 Posted November 11, 2012 I decided to google it. I found an army study guide for Land Navigation HERE38 What is the general rule for reading military grid coordinates?Right and UPSo, military maps are read the same as normal maps.
silkyskills 59 Posted November 11, 2012 Maybe the map should come in five parts
Dreygar (DayZ) 178 Posted November 11, 2012 I decided to google it. I found an army study guide for Land Navigation HERESo, military maps are read the same as normal maps.I encourage you to go on DayZ db, find a grid point and then try and locate that grid on the DayZ map using the correct method. You will obviously be at the wrong point because Day Z, Arma 2, and DayZ db respectively read the map incorrectly.
mr_chabowski@live.co.uk 2416 Posted November 11, 2012 I just looked up both of my camps on DB map. The coordinates are right.Maybe I'm just not understanding you properly, but I don't see any difference.

He's reading the map wrong. He's reading it the way Arma 2 (military sim???) reads it.
mr_chabowski@live.co.uk 2416 Posted November 12, 2012 (edited) Maps are read X, Y (Left and Right, Up and Down)That's normal, I don't understand how you're finding a difference where it doesn't exist.EDIT : Just to be clear, that's the way I've always read maps, and I've never been a member of any armed forces.
