I finally had the funds come through to purchase the game and have been playing for the last few hours. There's a steep learning curve at first I have to say. Life 1 - Apparently I was stuck in run mode because I was making enough noise to attract every zombie in the town even while crouching. I knocked one out and tried to run away, but they never seemed to lose my trail despite weaving around buildings and I was eventually ripped limb from limb. Life 2 - After consulting the guilde, I realized I needed to use certain keys to ensure I wasn't in a running crouch and proceeded to go exploring. Unfortunately I accidentally stepped right in the line of sight for a zombie and died while trying to figure out how to climb a ladder out of it's reach. Life 3 - Starting to feel like Lazarus from coming back to life so many times, I managed more caution this time. I found a fire extinguisher and even managed to kill a couple zombies who ran up to me. Great! Unfortunately the last one damaged all of my rags and it said I couldn't use them to stop the bleeding. I died looking for something to stop the flow of blood. Life 4 - This one was going great. I had full hydration, I managed to find a lot of food and the only down side was losing a pair of binoculars to a server restart. I wandered through a pretty much empty server until it dropped the connection and decided that with a number of items in my pack and fully refreshed, I would go join a newbie friendly server to try my hand at interaction. I suspect the listing of 'newbie friendly' was a trap however as I was KoSed from behind despite not having a gun and not a single word being spoken to me. Note to self, ignore any server claiming to be newbie friendly. Life 5 - To be seen. I expect to start sometime after dinner now that I have a better feel for the controls and a grasp on the basics of the system. I still haven't found a single gun, so maybe this one will be the time. I think I will also have to work on minding my surroundings better while I manage my inventory. That little KoS incident asside, I am pleased with the game so far. I haven't experienced most of the glitches everyone frequently complains about so far. Killed a zombie with my firsts more than once and once I had the machete it was easy enough to survive an encounter. I did get a little bit of zombie ghosting through walls, but even that was pretty minor. I think once I am a bit more skilled with the controls, I am going to have a blast with this game.

I wish we were forced to interact with others to survive...
gibonez replied to Grimey Rick's topic in General Discussion
I can understand being banned for committing suicide too many times putting strain on the server. For server hopping, for combat logging and for ghosting. But for killing people WTF ? -
Your quite wrong. The point of the Hive, is so you make take your current player into other servers, with MORE or LESS players depending on what you want to do.. They do not spawn MORE or LESS loot depending on variables, nor do they collect that kind of Data on stable servers. LOOT does NOT RESPAWN.. Until it does.. There shall be server hoppers! If your talking about "Ghosting" which is somebody logging in inside a place your "Camping" Stop camping and start playing... Stop watching the stairs, and go out and play the game... Camping is for pansies, and you deserve to be ghosted.

Props for killing those guys. They deserved what they got. Even using their own ammo on them. But you were clutching that wall peeking exploit a lot, and I get the impression you're already in the habit of using it, so there's a bit of pot calling kettle black here. Not saying that leaning is anywhere near as bad as aimbots/ghosting/ESP, but it's still a form of cheating which, if you do use it regularly, makes you a bit of a cheating bitch too. Something to consider. Anyway, what did you do with the ammo afterwards?

Well, quite. Oh, I don't doubt it would be easy to get around; I just like the idea of an extra level of tension to the gameplay that the uncertainty would bring. After all, you wouldn't know the population of the area IRL - you'd need to ask (or interrogate) others to know the state of an airfied/barracks/town defences. Ghosting, server hopping and combat logging all become high-risk ventures when you don't know what you're spawning into; even if you do consult web sites to check pops you're always going to be well behind the curve of the actual figures. Clan servers? They can keep their players - they'll be too frightened to break out of their little loot farms into a big scary world of uncertainty. They'll end up on an echoing low pop all gunned up with no-one to pewpew or only half can get on the busy servers and get torn to shreds because the sniper team are waiting for enough free slots.

Glad you enjoyed your experience. DayZ is amazing when you are first getting started and have no idea where everything is and what it does. When Arma 2: Combined Operations goes on sale you'd be doing yourself a favor by picking it up, the mod is a great way to get an idea of where the standalone is going to end up. Both the vanilla mod and the more popular DayZ Epoch have their own charm. Private hives do away with things like server hopping, ghosting and for the most part combat logging. Plus, vehicles/persistent storage really flesh the game out nicely in a way that hasn't been achieved in the alpha yet. Once the Standalone is closer to completion it'll surely be hard to compete with as for as zombie survival goes, but at the moment it sounds like you'd really enjoy the mod.

Welcome. Feel free to use the technology provided for you here at the forums. ..and its not useless. Its to stop from Ghosting during combat, and its effective to a certain degree. So it stays. Dean with it.

What Do You Think About The Long Spawning Time ?
BonnyBrown replied to Sir Trolle's topic in General Discussion
The funny part is people actually think the timers are there because of hopping/ghosting, sure it was a basic solution to these problems as well, but... Rocket is on the record admitting the actual reason they needed these timers is because their infrastructure code is so horrible that it can't handle people logging in and out with any frequency without major problems. They hope that some day they will be able to move into the year 2000 with the vast majority of the online gaming industry and be able to handle users actually using their systems without them being crippled, but that's a ways off. http://www.reddit.com/r/dayz/comments/23tzhy/just_spent_a_few_hours_on_stable_here_are_my/ch0rhzj -
What's the current hacking status like in DayZ:SA?
dead_short replied to RadikulRAM's topic in General Discussion
Just got shot by a hacker/glitch exploiter through the walls of the jailhouse on the NE airfield. Being shot be someone who is a better hunter is acceptable and part of this game. Even ghosting I can live with and I anticipate it as part of an attacking squad's possible tactics. But stopping glitch exploitations( and outright hacks like teleportation) should be top priority of the development team IMO. After twelve hours running around building up a character, it is galling in the extreme to go this way. DayZ is unique game play for now but not for ever. When is H1Z1 coming out anyway... dead_short -

Not true at all. The thing about this I don't get is the time penalty was put in to prevent combat logging then ghosting. You can't ghost if you log onto the same server so remove that time restriction. Also going from hardcore (one character) to standard (a different character) shouldn't have a time restriction. It seems the devs have forgot why the time restriction was put in the game.

First of all Gibonez, who cares how many posts there are. If I want to post, I can. That is what this forum is about to voice you opinions. Second, MuchHigher, your petty complaint comment comment you can keep to your self. As I told Gibonez, this forum is voicing opinions about the game, as it is in alpha, they need feedback. A spawn timer of 5 - 10 minutes is not required when you enter a server for, and get kicked, or it reboots. That is just wrong. I am not a server hopper, or a ghoster, I like to play on high pop servers, and muttle my way to the gear that I get. It is my opinion that if the spawn timer is going to be kept, a lot of people are going to get tired of waiting, and just not play the game anymore. From what I read, the server hopping for loot, and ghosting was the reasoning behind the timer, and I understand and agree something had to be done. That being said 10 minutes, that is just retarted. Tops, 2 minutes should be levied against a player, but that being said, the game should flag that the server rebooted, or you were kicked off a server, thus nullifying the spawn timer, or at least making it the least amount that a person could get. As a developer myself, I know that it's not as easy as it sounds, but the DayZ client has the potential for setting a flag in a INI file or regkey signifying a server restart or you were kicked was the reason for your last swap. White Trailer Trash, I wouldn't play a game that made you wait 20 minutes or more to get in and play. And as for bashing someone for posting on a open forum SHAME ON YOU GUYS. Drag.

How can you ghost if you spawn in on the exact same location ? Disconnecting from a server and then reconnecting to the same server = same position as when you left. That is not ghosting.

Maybe the reason why they haven't added bicycles?
p4triot replied to Loopest's topic in General Discussion
When vehicles are added people will start playing on same server and ghosting and server hopping will become much less of a factor, except for lone wolves who don't give a shit about vehicles. But right now those are top everything (gear) and when vehicles and bases are added, even if they have top gear, not being bound to a server will imply being on a huge disadvantadge towards those who are. At least was like that back in the mod. Bound vehicles make sense, if not, clans would just hoard Helis and all sort of vehicles from different servers and put them together in one server, turning this into battlefield 3. And no, thanks. I already have BF3 for that. P.D: what makes a lot more sense is having some way to logout with YOUR vehicle, making things still fair for everyone though. Because back in the mod, one of the big problems was losing your vehicles simply when you were not playing because you were busy with RL. If I gotta lose my vehicle, ok, but I'd rather lose it "on track" while defending whats mine, not because im at the office. -
For forcing me to wait 600 seconds when I have a session loss while entering a game, or during the game. Thank you for not putting correct times on the servers, so that when I log in, I cant see anything, because you just implemented this day night cycle, and I have never carried a flashlight before, and I have to log to be able to find a Day time server, in which i have to wait 600 seconds. Thanks for beefing up zombies so that when I was hit 3 times by one, fully healthy mind you, I died. I know you guys are trying to fight the Ghosting, but you are also discouraging everyone else as well. After this new update, I have played far less Dayz, because it has become a chore to accomplish any task. Sure it should be challenging, but when it takes me 30 minutes to find a Daytime server, I would rather go play a game that I just log into and start playing. It wouldn't be so bad if when you logged into the game, you had a flashlight in your hand, but you have to die to have that. Has anyone really found a regular flashlight before as loot? I haven't, it could be an item spawn, I just haven't seen it, I have only seen ones players dropped, but even then, how can I see it if it is pitch black. Even within my own clan, which is built on Dayz Mod, Dayz SA, and Breaking point players, people are leaving the standalone. Yes, I know it is alpha, but come on, I am no genius developer, but I know how to weigh the risks involved with a change to a game, and make a decision based upon what you are gaining/losing from the change. Gained-- Of the 5-10% of people who ghost, they will do it less often, but still do it, and play less often because it has become a hassle. Loss -- Of the 90-95% of the remaining players, they are getting frustrated and play less often because it has become a hassle. Where is the upside? How about this...If a player has been around any shooting of 1000m or under within the past 15 minutes, give them the wait time. The others are just trying to gear up or continue to have fun, so why penalize them? .02

Yes, the explanation for the longer timer was quoted IN Detail IN the Thread by SmashT This is one of the reasons I thought it was such a useful thread. A lot of players are worried, and unhappy ONE (only one among several) - one reason is the server time stated in the server list has nothing to do with the "real game-time" on the server, leading many players to log in and find it is midnight, not the13:00h as stated, that they expected. They then have up to a 10 minute penalty to re-log. NOT their fault. AND this server-time carelessness - indifference? - technical problem? - is not because of the Hive Data problem either. This was commented fairly extensively in the thread ALSO many servers state '0 players' - on my list this can vary from 30 to 70 on average, sometimes up to 100. Most of these "0" player servers give the message "Wait for Host" forever, when you try to log in. Again, NOT a problem with the Central Hive I think (correct me if I'm wrong). But very puzzling for players. This was also commented in the thread. Various other log in problems and 'penalties' were discussed. Then of course there is the whole discussion of hopping/ghosting/time penalties, how much of these delays are to prevent hopping (as originally intended) and what additional delays are to aid Hive Data processing? The clear answer seems to be available - condensed and understandable -in the now CLOSED thread. People were talking and arguing about this. Its natural, it's a player concern. However, if you close the thread, HOW are people who think the 500 second penalty is for ghosting and combat logging, ever going to learn the TRUE problem? As I pointed out - in only 48 hours the thread attracted 190 comments - a LOT of interest (MORE than most threads, right?). These people had a chance to find out what is really happening (thanks in particular to SmashT and some others on that thread). Now chance gone. Discussion - understanding - Closed. Sad = As another player quoted somewhere (not that I fully agree) "This is not a democracy this is the DayZ forums" Many players think this is an important game element (rightly or wrongly) but the discussion is closed rapidly when it attracts comments, even heated comments from many disturbed, unnerved players, as well as sane and supportive players. On the other hand, on these Forums, players can talk about "my little poney" for as long as they like (months?). I myself don't mind that subject at all, and other light-hearted off-topic threads. - they just has less to do with player worries about the new game developments. I guess that at least half the SA players are not rocket-scientists, they are young folk who want to 'play' AND they want to be part of this Dayzgame community - they join - they make the effort to contribute. So MODERATE as much as you can - its a hard and time-consuming job, if players show worry and concern, then guide and explain? I hope we agree. xx pilgrim

$0.02 This new timer is bullshit devs. SOME of US have LIVES, Girlfriends, Jobs, Gardens, A house, SHIT TO DO. So if we're playing and get a "Lost Session" or join a server then get kicked by some asshole abusing the server owner rules; WE the normal players get slapped on the wrist for it? So you think we want to wait 500 seconds. Yeah, right... Fix other MORE important things other than screwing with wait timers. Server hoppers aren't THAT big of an issue, my god. Who made this 500 second timer? I'd like to slap him across the face for wasting my time. Community; A. If you're complaining it fixes ghosting (maybe you fucking camp too much? think about that one :P) B. If you're complaining it fixes server hopping. (people are going to get gear regardless, A noob with a weapon is STILL A NOOB.) This game is going to be in ALPHA for how much fucking longer? And you're incorporating these timers now? WHY, WHY, WHY THANKS for literally wasting HOURS of my accumulated time in the next year + Should I decide to keep playing the whole time. End Rant

Do Zombies Dream Of A Good Nights Sleep? (Zombie feedback)
Rick1633 replied to SmashT's topic in General Discussion
Pretty cool? Yeah its real cool that just when your are feeling immersed in the apcalyptic open world of DayZ, you are feeling the anxiety of an approaching zed...... You quickly duck into a house..... You guard the door.... You know the exits are covered......... Then the sight of a fucking broken zombie ghosting through a wall rips you right out of the immersive and intense world and further slas you in the face with the shitty and laughable way the zed hits you when its not even facing you.... You think current zombies are cool? Their latest updates actually magnify their shittyness. -
Then ghosting would come back. Timer was put in first and foremost to combat combat logging. Hoppers were secondary.
-
This login timer system needs to be scrapped. The reason it exists are three-fold: 1. It is a huge performance strain on the servers to load a new character. 2. Campers complain about ghosting and combat logging. 3. Server hoppers take loot from "legitimate" players. So how do we fix these problems: 1. To fix the server performance problem add a queuing system for player logins. Make the player priority based on the amount of servers they have recently logged in on. 2. To fix ghosting save player location on a per-server basis. This would approximate a private hive system on a global scale. To fix combat logging prevent logging out in a player is detected to be in combat. If a player is shot at or shoots another player make sure their characters stays on the server for at least 5 minutes. 3. To fix server hoppers see #2. Just my opinion.
-
Im in favor of it. Its just a necessary evil to prevent ghosting and loot-farming exploitation. Yes it sucks when you join a server thats lagging/crappy/etc and optionaly try to switch servers and all-i get it! but i dont really see any viable other solution thats not prone to being exploited in some way and solved both PvE and PvP abuse. I know my old clan often would go to high value- areas like NWAF and repeatedly server hop between low pop servers to accelerate Loot cycling efficency. The 500Seconds also means that you have a considerable amount of time to wrap up a PvP scenario and re-locate if one of your opponents were to DC behind a corner in hopes of re logging behind you.
-
The only thing this timer helps with is Ghosting. That is it. /thread, argument, bickering, name calling, etc.
-
I reply and directly quote people that I feel like responding to, kinda the whole point of forums really. If I want to talk generally in the thread I do. Trolling is not a game I play and you can think what you will but when someone clearly hasn't a clue to what they're talking about it deserves a response most of the time. Just for the record when you logout you do sit down and remain in game for 30 seconds, this is to discourage combat logging. The 500sec timer in question is to alleviate server hopping/ghosting among other technical issues.
-
The timer made me search Google, go here, register and post this. Basically, I think up to 600 seconds is pointless in fighting server hopping, because waiting and hopping is still the easiest way to loot. Those whimps will wait for half an hour if necessary. It doesn't changed a single thing, just an annoyance for players who get kicked from a server, suffer from connection losses and similar. Making a group of players wait 10 minutes just because one guy dropped sucks big time. Some timer to prevent ghosting is good and necessary, but 5 minutes were already more than necessary.
-
Honestly the fact that so many people can "only" complain about the long timer, instead of complaining about server hopping and ghosting, means that its working.. If this time wasn't in the game, so many more people would be complaining about being ghosted in the middle of a firefight. Good job devs! dont give in to the masses, if you're going to change it, make it longer. Log out in the woods, inside a tree.. Not in the middle of an airfield. LESSON LEARNED.
