    Anyone else enjoy the fear in Dayz?

    DayZ is a fairly simply game from a mechanics perspective. There are only a few motivators in DayZ: Extrinsic (game rewards): Gear, vehicles, soft skills, character lifespan visual changes, bases, animal companions. Intrinsic (internal desires): Griefing/murder/KoS, helping others, roleplaying, exploration, survival. Extrinsic motivators are used to guide intrinsic ones. Since good gear, the main extrinsic motivator, is more rare people have less of a reason to fear the loss of their character. I remember when I, after hours of play, finally got a fully-decked M4 I was so scared during every social encounter. Now I run around with my shotgun and shoot people in the face. I know that if I die I can easily re-gear in about 30 minutes to an hour. With all of the focus on "sandbox" gameplay I think people forgot that extrinsic motivators are very important to the majority of us. DayZ has none. This is why it is so important that they are planning to add other extrinsic motivators like "soft skills", character lifespan, bases (related to gear) and animal companions. Without extrinsic motivators the only thing to do in DayZ would be run around and shoot people. All of these people saying that making gear more rare will improve the game's fun factor, or reduce KoS, are deluded. If free reign were given to server admins everyone would be playing on "high military loot" servers. Gear is the only thing this game has going for it. As soon as vehicles were added the player CCUs increased by 24%. TLDR; add more in-game rewards, please. Edit: I should add that the developers of H1Z1 seem to recognize the need for extrinsic motivation in a sandbox environment. They hired the Battle Royale guy. I fear there is a certain element in this community that is fighting against the progression of DayZ as a game. When Rocket announced he would be making a mod for BIS/SA the community response was shit. When Hicks announced soft skills as a project close to his heart the response was shit. The DayZ SKS/shotgun deathmatch is boring as hell. We need to move past it.

    Private shards will make this never and issue. I think what hes talking about is something odd the devs said about 'having to join multipul servers to complete vehicles because all the parts may not be on one server'. Not sure what I think about it, but also I wouldn't necessary call it server hoping. If you are playing on different servers for more then 10 minutes at a time, your just playing on a different server. If you go to a high loot area(s) and run through them and log out rinse and repeat then your hopping. That however, will also be less beneficial as already seen in persistence servers, if no one is looting the surrounding area there will simply not be any loot at the common server hopping spots. The problem is self correcting the way I see it. The problem is the number of 'lots of loot 2 hour restart' servers. When persistence is forced, well, someone get the 'brace yourself' meme ready.

    Your Goals?

    My goals? I don't think my goals can currently be safely accomplished because of the state of the game but after release i'm going to put an emphasis on getting a group of people I can communicate with IRL and pick/make a server that we only play on, set up a stronghold out in the middle of nowhere and start hoarding supplies, guns, ammo and vehicles there. Maybe try to get some kind of in server economy going using food as a currency and selling weapons and ammo.

    Vehicles are not invulnerable - they do however have a very high damage threshold. Anyone wanna see a mod get a ban? :D

    Vehicles are invulnerable, except the windows unless that has changed and since shotties have a spread it is possible that only some pellets hit you and the rest hit the body of the truck.

    Fuel Types / Engine Types

    Hi, With the new trucks in DayZ, this idea came into my mind after some hours of driving (and refueling). Why not add two different types of fuel? It could make the search for gasoline (which is pretty easy right now) more challenging. I think two fuel types are enough in order to make the game not too complex. When some day the fuel in gas stations will become limited, this will play a bigger role. Additionally some gas stations could have only one type of fuel (e.g. millitary only diesel). Canisters found in barns should contain gasoline only, which is the fuel for all garden equippment (2-stroke gasoline works also in 4-stroke engines). Canisters in garages could contain both types. Gasoline: The classic gasoline which a majority of the smaller cars drive. - Doesn't drive with diesel at all - Fueling the wrong fuel doesn't damage the engine - In order to drive again after fueling diesel, diesel has to be removed and gasoline has to be fueled Diesel: The diesel is always used by trucks and often by all-terrain vehicles due to it's high torque and lower fuel consumption. - A diesel engine can run on nearly everything that burns (alcohol, gasoline, etc.), but this damages the injection pumps, which will get ruined after a while if you don't refuel diesel. - Needs to be vented after it ran out of fuel (rolling down a hill for a few hundret meters works also fine, but may damage injection pumps) I'm not sure whether the venting and fuel exchanging are to complex for the game, but I just wanted to list up the basics of fueling (the wrong fuel). Note: This is a suggestion for the end stage of the development, in alpha or early beta it would probably make the game just unnecessarily complex.

    Even if the devs implement something that promotes server-hopping (which, from what I've read, wasn't the current devs. It was Rocket.), does it really count if there will only be 10-20 vehicles per server? http://www.reddit.com/r/dayz/comments/2iax7g/hicks_opinion_no_more_than_10_vehicles_on_an/ At that rate, the chances of you finding a vehicle and having to hop for parts is very low, basically statistically irrelevant.

    Toyota Hilux, favorite of terrorists and rebels the world over. I'd back that up along with the other Soviet/Russian vehicles. Older models look better though, imo.

And we already have a player average of 6 (Not much but we are growing) Even with the low player count there is still a large amount of PVP and base raiding! The Server is Hosted by ViLayer in the UK. The server is running smooth at about 40FPS outside of towns, even for players near Sweden, Norway and Belgium.     that is absolutely ridiculous why not make an inventory screen for the V3S it has a huge cab if they wanted people to test vehicles why not facilitate that with a basic system of stashing fuel cans in the truck....

Also admin events are something we are planning to add, as well as a coin system and customised traders.   16. It is a good idea to have a diversity among vehicles as it would be more realistic,but non-crashed cars should be rare and/or hard to get working. Nobody wants this game to be GTAV. Also, american cars,sport cars,heavy military vehicles should be a no-go. As for ideas…cars of course should have a trunk for storage and –for a start- have some basic parts vulnerable,therefor commutable. Locations should correlate with the number and types of vehicles available. For example a small village should have a few bycicles, rarely 1-2 motorbike and a very rare chance of a car. [background: suggesting that after the news of the infection,survivers must have used cars to get out of the dangerzone] Bigger villages/small cities should have multiple bike/motorbike spawns with 2-5 car spawns,all broke. Big cities (Cherno/Electro/Novo) should have multiple bike/motorbike spawns with 5-10 car spawns,from which 1-2 would be working,the rest broke. What i mean by broke is that with time [seeing how rusty most of the cars look like in Chernarus] 1. their batteries should be low or depleted, 2.their tires ruined/flat/have a leak, 3. their electrical circuit damaged,therefor not unable to start the engine and last but not least 4. have an empty fueltank. These are the most common problems with abandoned cars as far as i know. The 1. could be fixed by finding a charged accumulator in supermarkets/barns/petrol stations and simply replace the old one. OR find a rare recharger in garages,use it to recharge the depleted accu and you are ready to go. As with sewing kits,the rechargers should loose condition with every reacharge and be ruined after 3 use or so. Accumulators should spawn mostly half-depleted (worn at least in clothes definitions) or pristine/full with a rare spawn rate. The 2. could be fixed by replacing/pumping/fixing+pumping the problematic tires. [dont forget to have a chance for all 4 tires to be damaged] Replace should be easy by finding tires at fuel-stations or garages,pumping could be done by pumps at fuel-stations or with a bycicle pump,fixing could be done with special glues found in barns/garages/supermakets. Using the vehicle with damaged tires,it would be super-slow. The 3. could be fixed by replacing the circuit with a new one,found in supermarkets. The conditions of all these parts [accumulators/tires/circuits] in vehicles should vary and we can replace them from one another. To put it simple,all the parts should be able to get from other vehicles too. The 4. we are familiar with from the V3S and this thread has a lot of nice ideas for the fuel problem. Bikes should have the same problem with tires, motorbikes should have the same problems as cars,except the battery. Implementing these broken parts should bring some balance between the number of car spawns and the useability of them. Somewhat a lot of cars,but hard to make them work. Car-spawns could be random along roads and in cities,just as heli-crash site or be like static spawn points with different chances. Bigger chance in cities,less in villages, even less on roads. As for the meta-game problem,the parts should NOT be able to change servers. The next step would be customizing your vehicles,like having a separated inventory-part for the upgrades. These upgrades would have different purposes,like storage,defense,offense,etc. I’m ok with this idea as long as it would work as crafting. For example: Hammer+Metal Scrap+Welder = Reinforced armor plates = more durability.

    How the North has Changed

    Nobody mentioned that grass is taller and there is more different types of plants than in old cities. Once persistance and zombies work properly, you will be able to make stashes in those new small villages and farms. And maybe hide vehicles (if they can fit in those storages). I guess no one will search every barn or shed when chased by zeds. I like new look of North West, but I have to explore it.
  18. Totally agree with you. Most players looking for overpoch servers with traders, +10000 vehicles, autorefuel, Jets, Tanks, Milichoppers, deployable bike on spawn (seriously?!), high Calibre Weapons, Weaponsie around every corner , God mode on locked vehicles and around their Bases, do not forget about the safezones around traders. The whole mod becomes too much militarized. Most of them do not care about the zombies and want the whole game as easy as possible and when they die it's because of a bug or hacker nothing else. Every time there is a script published to make the life easier on a Server you will find it a few days on 95% on the fancy unique high loot servers, e.g. Single Currency with banking or like you've mentioned the slow Zeds. As an Admin I miss players which like to play DayZ as an survival mod and not some Arma wasteland decorated with zombies. But I also need to say that there is a little wave of server owners which try to bring DayZ back, not like the original, but with their own ideas and not so dump like the overpoch servers. I just hope there become more players which like to play DayZ as an challange and not a copy of CoD with walking Zombies.

    "Industrial Facility" test site

    I'm sure this has probably been suggested before, but nothing relevant came up when I searched for it. Simply, it's an offline test site where players can test features in a closed environment with a blank default character, unconnected to their MP character. Comprised of a small area, such as a walled industrial complex where vehicles, animals, weapons, ammunition and vital tools all spawn, with a closed building occupied by several respawning zombies. Now, i've never seen a grenade... ever. If I ever got one, i'd never use it for risk of blowing myself up. It's not a gun and has no special commands, so by extension i'd never even try. I've seen more than enough videos of players with week-old characters blowing themselves up trying to throw a grenade and not having even the slightest clue how to do it. The sad part is that it takes a week-old character to even find a grenade. It's just a glorified way to kill yourself once you reach endgame. A testing facility would give a place for players to test these completely unused and unknown weapons in a controlled environment. And while some wag might suggest testing these weapons on an unpopulated server, it doesn't work that way. It doesn't matter what server you're on, if a grenade fails and kills you, it kills you on every server. Not to mention they're so rare that you'll only ever get to test one. At least 90% of the time, if you find a rare weapon, you'll never have a mag or ammo for it and will discard it without ever being able to test it. How would you know if it's worth keeping? Of course, this isn't an armory or even a tutorial. You don't have god mode here or even infinite ammo, not even every item. What spawns in this place is there for you to test it under ideal circumstances. Once you exhaust the map's items, that's it. Maps aren't saved. All (which is none) progress is lost.

    In my opinion, if you can manage to hoard a bunch of vehicles, props to you. Especially once they're not ready to go as soon as you find them.
  23. Maybe we will need vehicles to transport building materials. Maybe there won't be clans that hoard all cars on server. And if there are assholes like that, they can't be online 24-7.
  24. I can see the headlines now... PEOPLE IN HOARDING STUFF SHOCKER! This was always going to happen, and to an extent already happens. You either have no vehicles at all or accept that people will hoard them, there is no in between.

    I said from day one of playing SA, I would be quite happy with just a bike! Not a vehicle, just a bike! I think having vehicles in persistant is too copy cat like of the mods! I quite enjoy spending the time running accross the map to get fully geared! I think if a car was always around, it would take the fun out of it! That's just imo though ;)
