Churches & Repentance

Recommended Posts

Let me put this in terms you might understand..

"Oh holy heliman, we don't want to be opressed by your fucking religious bullshit. Amen."

As you can see by this thread, no one thinks it's a good idea to bring any religion into the game.

Give up.

Yeah, if we don't put a couple of mosques in then muslim's are just going to riot again. And im not saying this to be offensive, but it's true, Muslims get worked up over nothing, and having a christian church that doesn't accompanny their beliefs would make them go crazy.

So you feel oppressed by the most miniscule of religious thought. A thought that affects a minority people like yourself cause they hold some belief superior to common religious teachings which essentially derive much of their fundamentals from humanism. To say its not a good idea is to suggest its a bad idea which isn't really a suggestion.

Look holy man, how about you keep your beliefs to yourself?

You really believe that if the society collapse, like this game portraits it, that religion is going to be a powerful drive?

I dont think mental stress should be simulated in a game like this. And i can think of a lot better ways to relieve said stress.

What trophy did you have in mind? A tooth, An ear? Does a bandit skin not tarnish the player enough?

Churches are just that a building. No moral system needs to be invented due to the players mentality, If you want to repent and make up for past actions then simply help others instead of having Cross's and the likes. No one needs to advertise where they have been and where they are going. Suppose you want them dressing as Apocalypse priests? walking saiviours?

I like Big mac's, do I get option of a Ronald McDonald skin?

Sorry, but no, I understand this was a suggestion but religion and games are not a good idea, That's why there are none.

Part of the humanity system should incorporate repentance whereby bandits would need to go a nearby church to ask for forgiveness if they are willing to have their humanity reduced. Bandits who have accepted this path of forgiveness would wear a cross. However those who don't seek repentance would eventually be stained with the blood of their crimes for the rest of their lives. This would be in the form of having to justify their killings with a trophy from their victims and having to carry it with them for the rest of their journey to remind them constantly of their past actions. Not obtaining a trophy from their victim would lead to anguish eventually having the character kill himself without consent. What you guys think of this idea?

Oh yes...that would go like... *kill 10 people*, go to church, ask forgivness, gain humanity...get out *kill another 10 people*

Noooooooooooooooooooooooo waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay pal. True hero players should be the only ones who could ask for forgiveness if anyone should be able to do that.

ok, now going apeshit in this topic.

sir, if we ever, but ever allow a place were strangers can peacefully live together, than you can mount a small church, but the so called churches must be well protected places, like a haven. And joining a religion should be like joining a clan, woth some benefits, different from clans, and open to all strangers, this could help combat banditry

Actually if the society does collapse religion will boom so much it would be crazy. People would be ready to grab just about any straw that explains why their world had changed. Many would convert to religion. Specially since zombies are kinda predicted in the bible.

Read books like Afterworld (not sure who its by

Let me answer that with a bit of a contradictory comment from one of the other poster's suggestion:

Churches are just that a building. No moral system needs to be invented due to the players mentality, If you want to repent and make up for past actions then simply help others instead of having Cross's and the likes.

So you ask isn't that what's already in the game? Yes its right in front of your eyes. There already exists a moral system in game whereby you kill another person your humanity goes to a negative value. Clearly in a lawless society why would morals hold anything of value is what you are trying to suggest. But yet it exists within the game. Remove the thought of what you perceive of religion in reality and let's call it in game the "Cult of Heliman" where you have bandits finally realizing their past mistakes to take on a new role which they would need to go to the cult's "headquarters" (believe it looks like a church in game) to have their humanity lowered. They could take on perhaps a new skin once they reach a positive humanity. Perhaps you may not like the idea of wearing a cross but in game it would mean either someone's trying to be converted but his/her humanity is still negative and once your reach a positive humanity your skin doesn't resemble that of survivor or a hero but that of a convert. This would make it easy to identify converts/would-be converts from bandits.

In short:

Survivors/Converts/Would-be Converts/Bandits.

As you can see if someone tries to exploit the humanity system in this case they would most likely fall under the category of would-be converts as they wouldn't want to be fully converted since as a convert if you go about having a negative humanity again you then permanently become a bandit for that life. The trick to maintaining a would-be-convert status would be not have your humanity extremely low (e.g. killing multiple people at an instant without having your humanity reduced first.)

What trophy did you have in mind? A tooth, An ear?

A ring, a piece of cloth, a bracelet, a necklace, spectacles something along those lines without have to go all psychotic.

Does a bandit skin not tarnish the player enough?

Banditry just like being a hero is earned. But for those you don't like the status of being called a bandit a better alternative to the current system (i.e. as a bandit, humanity gradually get's lowered over time or can be exploited by helping out your teammate) would be to go the nearest cult "headquarters" to have your humanity reduced to the desired level. This could just be in the form of camping it out inside the headquarters for what desired humanity you would like to get it down.

A religion/faction system with different clothing i suppose? But it would make it hard to recognize if one faction is friendly or not when joining different servers. Quite similar to that idea where you have a more believable system but without having to choose religions or factions i.e. Survivors/Converts/Would-be Converts/Bandits was what i was leaning towards.

I could do without the trophies, but it's not a bad idea.

You could make it where if your humanity falls below 0 you have a limited time to seek "forgiveness" at a nearby church to prevent becoming a bandit. This would help people that have had to kill in defense but it ended up being considered a murder by the game. The animation could last for a few seconds (like eating, drinking, etc). This makes for a risky situation in that one would be vulnerable while praying. Churches would then be another hotspot for PvP like grocery stores and firestations.

For the rest of you anti-religion people, this would not be forcing any religion on a person. Your character could be praying to a marinated steak for all anyone cares. If you get bent out of shape because of a "church" and "praying" which wouldn't even be mandatory, then you need to calm down and have some dip.

As it is truly said, there are no atheists in war.

Holier than thou springs to mind, My only issue is I don't want any religious cannotations my way, or in game. I have my faith and it serves me well but in a game?

Want to regain humanity? do it like the mod allows, change your ways in game. no need to add extra function.

You mean No Atheists in a Foxhole? Been there and winessed that, I did not look to a higher power, I looked to my training.

I'm a buddhist. The game already shows you what karma is like. You can't just repent (although it's a start). You can only become a better man trough action.

Good luck!

Finally someone who gets my point.

It's easy to talk bollocks Heliman, However on a lighter note you remind me of this chap.

dude, i was watching that yesterday, also i thought this was a troll post, but think of the gameplay possibilities we can add with religion, like faith, and so on, no mystical powers bollocks, but maybe a mission with moral and all the other stuff we can do with this...

I have tried to formulate an answer to this thread multiple times now and I must sadly confess (pun semi-intended) that I give up. There are so many things I fail to find the words to express my opinion about. :) I'll try once more:

It's a dumb idea.

"Must do this or character kills himself without concent"

What if i don't want to carry around a bunch of ears?

That's a whole new level of psycho.

And what if i don't want to ask for forgiveness from something i don't believe in?

Then i die?

All in all, the idea is generally accepted to be awful.

Someone should just lock this.

It shouldn't be locked, it should be ignored. I don't want to be forced to do often what I don't do on Sunday. 90% of people in the world belive in A God, why only ask for forgivness from only the Christian one as opposed to none at all? That way the devs can avoid the ACLU. (be honest and pragmatic)

I only like this idea because i could set up satchel charges up in a church.

But yeah, the humanity system should be based on several things, religion is not one of them nor should it ever be for obvious reasons.
