Are dogs worth 2 months of development time?

How important are dogs?

231 members have voted

  1. 1. How long would you wait for dogs?

    • As long as it takes, I want my puppy!
      60
    • Another month should be sufficient time to get the bugs out.
      20
    • As soon as possible!
      15
    • If dogs can't be programmed in 2 months they shouldn't be put in till standalone.
      62
    • I didn't want a pet to begin with, it's just another mouth to feed!

No.

I will predict that them dogs will be buggy as hell... they will agro every zed in the village, block you and run around headlessly as their path finding gets fukdup. What ever you can expect from crappy AI...

Like some hostages in old counterstrike/rainbow six...

Judging from previous experiences with AI followers, no fricking way am I going to ever use one. They're probably going to be a hindrance all the time except when you're looking for food. And I have no trouble finding food anyways.

Loaded poll. Where's my option for "Rocket has been working on more than just dogs in the past 2 months".

What are dogs going to do, just bark and give away your position to other players?

And you'll be comsuming double your food by feeding them. If I see one when they are released, I'll just shoot it.

That's already happened, which is precisely why it has taken two months to implement dogs, nearly all of Rocket's time is spent on the standalone.

Well that is good to hear because it kinda looked like Rocket was spending most of the time on game conventions (PAX, Gamescon etc).

If he was indeed working hard on standalone that is the best thing to hear for DayZ fans since DayZ mod is getting a bit stale with all these script kiddes and DCers.

EDIT: what happens to dog if you drive bike or car? If getting dog means stop to driving, then it's kinda bad.

Dogs sounds like a great idea as long as they can be trained to help you out. Where exactly can you find what has been planned for future updates?

Sod dogs just fix the current bugs then leave the mod alone and get standalone done.

It does not speak well to possible future standalone customers that the mod is broken and left broken for so long.

Oh i forgot its in "Alpha"........ how long will they keep the standalone in "Alpha"

Seriously this mod was fine a few versions ago get it working properly again, forget silly crap like dogs just give a working mod that keeps people playing till standalone, your current policy of stripping customerbase confidence will not sell copies of standalone, neither will dogs.

Dogs are already in ACR dlc. There is a mission where you use the dog to find people.

As for the development time I understand why they don't work much on the mod anymore. I think the "we will also update the mod" was just so people wouldn't rage. I mean why would they bother developing the mod if they are making the standalone.

I am a huge dog fan, I have two pet chihuahuas upstairs sleeping. I just love dogs so much that I don't want them implemented, same reason I didn't get pet wolves in Minecraft I'd just get to attached. I wouldn't want my or anyone elses dog getting killed.

They're already in the ACR dlc for ARMA 2 so it won't be all new stuff.

Yup.

People seem to forget that the mod is a patchwork of other peoples mods and code, rocket did barely anything but string them together.

WTB domesticated battle-kittens.

The last thing you hear when you stumble across a camp, as several clawed fiends pounce on you from the tree-tops:

"MEEEEOWWWWWWWWZZZZZZZ!!!!"

I think that the patch will nail the scripting and that is why its taking crazy long time. dogs arent going to be useful if they can be insta-killed as well, so they were probably finished a while ago and now its about fixing the security

Then you are represented with the last option since you don't want a dog due to the needs it would place on you. This poll was designed to see what percentage of the player base wants dogs and how long they are willing to wait for them implemented. The rest of your post is a rant about everyone but you crying and has little to do with this thread.

I wholeheartedly disagree that my option is represented. I already stated that I am excited to shoot everyone's dogs. I *want* the content patch, therefore I *want* dogs added as it is content for me. Just because I am not taking a dog companion doesn't mean that I am not benefiting from the content patch. It gives me additional targets to shoot at and additional ways to screw with survivors. The poll is "How long would you wait for dogs?", and I certainly still want dogs in the game for the aforementioned reasons.

.... dogs have to be the DUMBEST fucking idea i have ever seen in dayz

dayz is all about being low profile, sneaking around and generally not being seen, so the devs decide to add DOGS to the game that follow you around, giving you away when hiding in bushes, and for whom commands are given via loud whistles... when i heard about it, i thought this was surely a joke, and that no semi intelligent game dev, knowing how dayz works, would think this was a good idea.

on top of this obvious flaw, dayz is all about realism, and theres NOTHING realistic about being able to find a wild feral dog in the woods and suddenly have it obey your commands, especially via whistle, and especially not shit like *go attack this target* just because you gave the animal some food. i live in the south, and theres plenty of wild dogs around here, and it is simply UNREALISTIC to think you can go walk up on one, feed it, and befriend it, much less have it respond to commands.

this isnt even mentioning how a 2+ month development time wasted on such a moronic concept shows that i shouldnt be expecting good decisions from this dev team. this isnt a fucking MMO, we dont need PETS. whats next? Tank LFG for Zombie Caverns raid

its stuff like this that is making me pay more and more attention to "that other game" since they seem to be taking all the good concepts from this game, and they even call themselves an mmo, yet are smart enough to not be adding pets.

I think a focus on the standalone and using the mod as an aid in developing it. I'm pretty sure this is what they're doing and we should have faith that the dayZ team are working on what needs to be worked on. Dogs is a possible feature for the full game so use it in the mod and see how people react. Once the standalone is released then I think the mod will be in development perhaps side by side. DayZ has got a lot more to be done. Once the standalone is released it won't be a 'this is it'. It'll just be the beggining of its development

I'm working on dogs in my "spare time". They'll be done shortly, they're not a required item for game we just want to see if some people will find them useful or not

They also allow us to explore attacks between players and NPC animals for future development.

I would except Rocket not to add all the features to the mod.. I think it would be the best to leave all additional features to the standalone and bug fixes/small fixes like editing loot spawns should be brought to the mod.

I think it would be wonderful having a dog companion. :)

But if a bandit ever killed it, god help you all, because all of Chernarus would burn.
