Are dogs worth 2 months of development time?

How important are dogs?

231 members have voted

  1. 1. How long would you wait for dogs?

    • As long as it takes, I want my puppy!
      60
    • Another month should be sufficient time to get the bugs out.
      20
    • As soon as possible!
      15
    • If dogs can't be programmed in 2 months they shouldn't be put in till standalone.
      62
    • I didn't want a pet to begin with, it's just another mouth to feed!

I am curious what the community thinks about the addition of dogs and if they are worth such a huge investment in development time?

I was interested in the addition at first but after the first few weeks (and the fantastic ideas presented in the reddit suggestion thread) I am now just waiting to see what is next on the lost. I will probably own one at first then either never use him or get him killed somehow.

Well Rocket likes the idea and it has to get done sometime. I think it could be rather interesting if implemented right, but we'll see.

Well i think that Rocket is not developing only dogs... you can't expect patches in same perioed like before Standalone!!!

He can't switch to faster speed and develop two games in same time as one.

I think he is developing dogs and polishing them for standalone and he only will release it for mode too...

I am more curious when Alpha of Standalone version will begin!!!!!!

Not really a fan of the idea but we will see, I think the majority of his time has been spent on standalone and not on dogs. Regardless, it's worth spending time trying out ideas in the mod to determine if they are going to be worthwhile implementing in the standalone IMO.

I don't know about the dogs. It kinda depends on how useful they can be when we get them.

But honestly, i would rather have the standalone sooner if possible, at least for me the dogs could wait a little bit.

I gotta agree. I was so much more psyched about them before reading some of the simple ideas coming out of the reddit suggestion thread.

I figured once the standalone comes out then the mod would be used to test content, but if this is the case already then why not let us test the gamescom build??

Maybe it's broken, do you not remember the last time they released a patch early that wasn't ready yet?

He left the game broken, Full of duping & all sorts. I'd rather have an functioning game than dogs however he needs to think of way to get players back. Dogs may work, mind you the playerbase was at 200k when he decided to do it.... Lets just say quite a few DayZ players were left sore after that decision.

Dogs will be the first new content since 1.6.2.4 as far as I know. Maybe I am wrong (it does happen lol).

/edit- Good point smasht_AU, I had assumed it was working since he was showing it to a gaming confrence but there may be bugs.

Alot of us knew that at the announcement of the standalone game, things would come to a grinding halt for at least a few months.

I could imagine after the standalone is running, going back and working with the mod script instead of the standalone code would feel very redundant and a waste of time. In fact I do think any more work on the mod apart from testing the odd game mechanic is a waste of time. If there wasn't a single patch released for DayZ Mod from here on in, I'd be fine with that.

Poll needs another option: "Rocket isn't working on dogs", or "Don't care, waiting for standalone"

I'll defenently check them out on arrival, no matter when the next patch some will get pissed off over something. I hope dogs have been put on hold, while DayZ and BattleEye try stopping the flood of morons with hacks, exploiters and other cheats.

With all the private servers modifying the mod to fit their specific needs, I think it's time to let the mod be mod and focus on the standalone.

That's already happened, which is precisely why it has taken two months to implement dogs, nearly all of Rocket's time is spent on the standalone.

This. I don't think some people understand the importance of all the interviews and conventions they went to.

I'd rather they spent their time making the standalone as awesome as possible and only fix gamebreaking issues in the mod. I don't think they can fix the hackers in the mod so that effort is better spent on the standalone.

For now, I'm playing on a community supported whitelisted private server and I'm having a blast. Let the hacker morons fight each other.

Also, I can't wait to have a dog. Especially if we can put a little ghillie suit and pack on him.

I'm sure Rocket and the team are doing a lot more than just dogs.

Didn't vote, because I was not represented. Please add:

"Holy shit, stop crying. DayZ has EXPLODED over the past 2 months not even counting that fact that Rocket suddenly reached the goal he wanted and was offered a means of getting standalone to market and has had to be in constant meetings, PR campaigns, and other responsibilities (plus his non-DayZ life). Give the man some leeway about your damn dogs/1.7.3"

Personally, I will be sniping peoples dogs (and leaving the survivors unharmed to grieve) all day long. I have little interest in dogs themselves, but I welcome this open sandbox approach that will allow everyone to play their own way with the structure and tools that Rocket sets up for us. For my playstyle, I won't nab a dog myself. Trying to maintain a vehicle is hard enough and a liability. Having to feed/heal said companion would just put me at risk all the more. But I will be one of the people causing others to cry post on the forums about "REALLY?! Shoot my dog and drive off laughing?!". Be on the lookout.

The more features the better. I am intrigued as to how dogs will work and how many people end up running around with one.

Do you think there will be a new stat - Dogs killed - because for some they are going to have a big target on their backs.

Then you are represented with the last option since you don't want a dog due to the needs it would place on you. This poll was designed to see what percentage of the player base wants dogs and how long they are willing to wait for them implemented. The rest of your post is a rant about everyone but you crying and has little to do with this thread.
