I don't understand why you people are afraid that a mod of a fairly obscure military simulation video game is going to become 'mainstream noob friendly'.

Well, there are many ArmA2 fans who can quote every single detail that their military mods replicate and some of them are a little ticked off that all these people are playing vanilla ArmA2 just to kill zombies. Zombies are 'mainstream' and they don't want Bohemia to focus on dayz instead of developing the most accurate milsim.

Funny thing is: BIS are specialists at the indie release' date=' so I trust that they'll be able to get a game like DayZ to market without having to give into a big-name publisher and compromise what makes DayZ good.

Past few years I've getting into more indie games. The small companies have it right. The big publishers just shit on everything, and try to milk it for money. Oh I see you found a M4A3 CCO, well if you want to keep it please pay another $10.

I like obscure games that cater to specific groups. It means so much more as you are playing. Like the game was tailor made for you. Not like the hog wash revamped, copied, and overly used all over the market. Those type of games become watered down, to the point it is not longer fun to the intended user. Making the following games having to keep that watered down to even keep users.

I do not like the argument people use about how if you love a game you will support it. Well when said game is beyond what it was there is no point. What you loved is gone, and now completely becoming a zombie. A shell of what it once was, and dumbed down to basic thinking.

Most like Dayz for what it is, completely new, and different then all over zombie games. Yet it seems like all the new people, and a few older people want to turn this into Dead Island/L4D.

So to sum it up I get what OP is saying, but he has it wrong.

While agree what makes DayZ great is its unforgiving nature and in no way should that change. (It gives an experience like few games I've played. It reminds me most of the Stalker games.)

Your Elitist attitude is pretty unflattering and is generally the attitude that results in a pretty unpleasant community. New people should be welcomed, because at the end of the day, if they have fun, they will stick around and enjoy the game for what it is. If they find it to hard, they'll whinge and leave.

Anyway, Rocket, keep up the top notch work, this is the most fun I've had in a game since Starcraft 2

And just as a side note, Starcraft's focus is on the Competitive/Pro scene. Try playing it competitively and I'm sure you'll find it a very challenging and complex game, especially when the mind games and strategy come into play.

While I think the OP was a pretty terrible post.

I would like to see DayZ stick to it's core design quite a bit, but just like the game was well placed in ARMA 2. (bleeding and bone breaks = awesome)

The humanity aspects will need some creative designs to allow players who got hooked by CHKilroy's type of teamplay to get some fun teamwork in.

Dayz is doing so well because it is a breath of fresh air. It has been over 10 years since the gaming industry has returned to true hardcore sandbox pvp. If Dayz was another left 4 Dead or any other cheesey zombie game' date=' it would have been forgotten.

What is separating DayZ from the rest is not the zombie factor, its the large open world meets survival of the fittest and player crafting that truly matters. The game could have been mediaeval based and guilds build and create castles, capture horses, hunt for food and claim lands.

Gamers like myself have been waiting for the noob mainstream gaming industry to die and indie / mod developers to pave the way for next generation creative gaming.

Fk call of duty, battlefield, world of warcraft, starcraft and all the other boring unimaginative games that were brought to the market only for profit. This is the game we've been waiting for. I try to avoid the use of memes or the regurgitation of words or phrases said by famous people but...this made me fukn LOL.

Anyway. I don't think the people who play this game are some kind of MASTER GAMING SUPER HARDCORE RACE who plays exclusive games. If DayZ keeps growing, there's gonna be inevitable for many many noobs to at least try the game, but I don't think the game will be watered down to appeal a bigger group of people and that's exactly what makes it so interesting and fresh. I think we all agree right now that the changes this mod needs are just adjustments to polish some game content and mechanics and new features, but I don't think anybody wants this game to be easier.

I think' date=' if done properly, DayZ can be extremely profitable. I'm no hippie, I think I'm a total realist. But I like to think, I'm going for the big win - trying to think 5-10 years ahead. Not just this development cycle. The big companies, that is what they do - just one cycle at a time (ahem... THQ, may they RIP).

Again, to reiterate. Chose wisely, be an informed consumer. Social media lets you do this now. You don't have to jump on the bandwagon anymore, and that is why sites like IGN and etc... will become irrelevant if they don't start valuing the real power: social media, streamers, youtubers.... basically: you. fucking. guys. The customer.

It's no longer a bullshit marketing statement, it's fact. And I think it is social media that has made that happen. What I love about it, is that now it means I can talk directly to you as a developer, argue with you, get mad, and all that. That was never possible before in development, for me at least. It's very liberating.

Forums have a way to tear you down, take away all your fucks till you have none to give.

Perfect example is Darkfall. Granted AV is a terrible company, but they abandoned the forums. In a way they had no choice as people continuously thrashed their work.

Eventually it will happen to you. I read an article about it once.. Maybe if I can dig it out I'll post it.\

Mainstream gaming is so mainstream. I only enjoy playing indie games like a good hipster. I don't enjoy playing games I enjoy because they are O SO mainstream.

They said the same thing when I re-enlisted in the Army at 28.

Again when I had to redo all my officer training as part of it.

Again when I got sent on exchange to redo (again) officer training in singapore with 18 year old.

They are saying it again now.

My point, if two branches of the military couldn't break my spirit, resolve, sense of wonder, and disdain for the ordinary and worn path... then I honestly don't think you guys will be able to wear me down.

If I can't be directly connected to you guys, what is the point? I don't have a wife/kids. The thing I value most in life is interaction with people. That is why I like modding. My favorite part of E3 was discussing new concepts with people, watching kids totally ace ArmA3. Seeing all these new concepts, cultures, language, and ways of playing games growing in youth really gave me a kick. I want to be part of that, and that's why I am here.

Really, going forward. That is my one stumbling block with any developer/publisher/venture capitalist wanting to fund this project. Without the creative freedom, blunt honesty, and direct interaction this project is doomed to failure.

Just KickStart it, rocket. You relinquish no control but can still gain a great deal of freedom with the funds provided. I know you feel it's early and I respect your hesitation but at the same time "strike while the iron is hot" is sage advice. Even if you truly feel there's not one thing you could do with a little money to further the project at this moment, you can bank it now and spend it when that time does come.

I for one would pony up $100 or more even if the KS package was just a t-shirt or poster or something.

A bit off topic but were you in the NZDF? I was in the RNZAMC for a few years and am now in the UK forces. I have fond memories of using the simulator suite (running VBS if I recall correctly) at Linton - is that what got you interested in working with BIS?
