SteveMac555 37 Posted August 18, 2012 Hello! After exploring the north east side of Chernarus I came across some quite large rocks, where at a distance looked like some caves. So I thought of the following:DayZ Standalone game to have an underground system of caves and abandoned mines. Cave entrances and mine shafts should be scattered around the world so there isn't a choke point.Of course, it would be dangerous down there with it being in pitch black and only using a torch/night vision to see. But that then opens up a whole lot of other things, such as lanterns, fire etc. being added into the game. Why would anyone go down?Exploration of course! If not, at least for the specialised loot (pick-axes, remains of bases, player made camps, gold/iron, etc. could all be added.) as well as the current loot in the game. Another reason would be to maybe hide your camp down their, or if the cave/mine entrance is big enough maybe even a vehicle or two. ATVs/Bikes etc.I have added some images below of real-life caves and mines for reference.

Lonrem 62 Posted August 18, 2012 Rocket already said he wants to do some underground base building. It'll be instanced and such, and require a lot of work to pull off, multiple people etc. But that'll be for the standalone.
BattleBear Custom 18 Posted August 18, 2012 You sir have a great idea but i hope Lonrem is right i would love to see this.

This would be quite easy to develop as it would be a part of the normal map (non-instanced) It wouldn't be made primarily for building camps/bases but it would be a good place to hide normal tent camps. As well as adding more areas to the map!
That Guy (DayZ) 46 Posted August 18, 2012 Rocket said on multiple occasions that underground base building will be one of the high priority's for the standalone release.
Lord Sloth 8 Posted August 18, 2012 what is instanced?
Freefall552 26 Posted August 18, 2012 That would be awesome. But I hope that they won't make any instanced places in this game, it doens't belong in this genre.
Lonrem 62 Posted August 18, 2012 That would be awesome. But I hope that they won't make any instanced places in this game, it doens't belong in this genre. It's not going to be a safe place or anything. People can attack, take over your cavern etc. From what I've gathered, there will be a limited number of 'caverns' on a server. The instancing would be necessary to help keep some of the performance issues down.
SteveMac555 37 Posted August 18, 2012 Rocket said on multiple occasions that underground base building will be one of the high priority's for the standalone release.I didn't mean the original idea to be base-building, or even bases at all. Just an explorable (non-instanced) underground part of Chernarus that you can freely roam. The camps I mentioned in the original post were referring to the ones being made out of tents/wire etc. that is currently available now.
That Guy (DayZ) 46 Posted August 18, 2012 Well he also said that he wanted the map to be more player controlled, So the caves you find would be made from players either a week ago or an hour ago, they wont be instanced and you'll be able to roam them as much as you want, gather supplies or take it over. I'm not sure why he is super interested in the underground topic but there will also be some underground areas that are lootable just like an open house. 3rdparty 229 Posted August 19, 2012 Been suggested before, but i dont think in such brief but clarifying detail XD+
th3rdparty 16 Posted August 19, 2012 he could also bring in underground sewer systems or underground military complexes they dont just have to be mines or caves, the sewer system can be used to get in and out of the citys. Underground military complexes could be very dangerous and hard to get into but give some very good loot etc. i just cant wait for the stand alone to come out and see what they came up with as well. It'll be instanced and such, and require a lot of work to pull off, multiple people etc. But that'll be for the standalone. This would go great with it since i see no way of someone building a underground base from scratch, maybe you would have to find a mineshaft and build onto that. Lonrem 62 Posted August 21, 2012 This would go great with it since i see no way of someone building a underground base from scratch, maybe you would have to find a mineshaft and build onto that.Apparently his idea was entering the place via grates and such in the ground. So cisterns or existing sewers perhaps. I would love for a full blown sewer system that people split up. "Your group has that area, we have this area, we band together to kill invaders." That would be AWESOME.

wtfosaurus 30 Posted August 21, 2012 Instanced means that the underground bases/sewers/etc. would be on a separate map and have its own loading screen(if required) to lessen the resources needed for the overall map (think loading times). hope this cleared up any confusion as to what people meant by instanced :)
