I thought it would be interesting to take a general poll on what they would like the weapon scheme to be. I see two different ways that Day-Z could go on this:

There are games out there that have a very limited and therefore highly specialized weapon scheme, like Half Life 2. Each weapon performs a specific role:

Crowbar: Melee

Pistol: Light sidearm

Magnum: Heavy sidearm

Crossbow: Long Range sniper

SMG: Light Assault

Pulse: Heavy Assault

Shotgun: Short ranged heavy damage

Having very specialised but limited number of weapons meant that their introduction was meaningful. When father Grigori throws you the shotgun in Ravenholm it makes you a much more efficient zombie killer. Just prior to fighting the combine soldiers at shorepoint base you pick up the pulse rifle, saving you from pumping entire magazines of SMG ammo into them. Weapons are upgrades but they also change your playstyle. The problem is that there is little scope for using a weapon in an interesting way.

The antithesis to this would be the weapon scheme of Borderlands, with over 17,750,000 different ones in game. The earlier weapons balance advantages (power, Rate of fire, range) with disadvantages (reload time, recoil, range). As the game progresses, the disadvantages become less apparent. A ranged weapon with high power or a shotgun with a good rate of fire for instance. The problem here is that with the shere number of weapons the difference between one another become negligable. The thrill of a new weapon becomes a chore, not to mention a scrolling fest, trying to compare them properly.

Of course, there are already more weapons in Day-Z than there were in HL2 and they are based on real world weapons so a procedurally generated weapon scheme is out of the question. But the question still remains of what kind of weapon scheme Day-Z should have.

A large number of weapons means being able to tailor your weapon choice exactly to your playstyle instead of considering a new weapon a simple upgrade. Someone might favour a weapon because they know it well, not plan on holding on to it until they get an AS50, L85A2 or FAL, the "endgame" weapons. The problem with this would be that finding a new weapon would have less importance because the differences are more subtle. A small number of weapons would mean a more class based playstyle with an obvious progression your weapon upgrades but limited scope to find a weapon that suits you perfectly.

Have at it!

Well, I've been walking around a couple of hours now, and haven't found a weapon yet. I like this, though, since it keeps the atmosphere alive. I'd say weapons (and especially guns) should be quite rare, but with more variation. Melee weapons should be more common, though. Knives, crowbars, woodaxes. That's stuff that could be in anyone's backyard, basically, whereas weapons would be much harder to come by.

I would like to see a bit more variation in the weapons. As far as I know there are alot of weapons in Arma II. Weapons with different scopes etc.

Love to see these ingame ;)

If I have to respawn I'll find at least a hatchet within 30-60minutes. So weapons are a little bit too common for my taste.

The idea of finding melee weapons easier than firearms is fine.

Hope the Hunting Knife can be used as a weapon (like the Hatchet) soon.

The variations in the weapons is enough but I'd love to customize them myself.

I.e. find a M4 with a scope attached, take off the scope and tape it on my AK47.

I don't know how well this would work with the ARMA2 engine. I can live without it if I have to ;)

What really bothers me is the amount of ammunition you can find.

Just walked around with a Lee Enfield and in every second barn I stumble over at least one mag of Lee-ammu. Not to speak of the Pellets/Slugs.

Try duct taping a scope onto a rifle that it wasn't intended for IRL. It would be absolutely useless.

Good thing this isn't real life.

I wouldn't really say any of those options..

I'd say the amount of weapons is alright, but its easier to find higher quality weapons.

Make pistols and less quality weapons easier to find, let snipers and high quality rifles be in be hard to find.

I want more low-tech gear that's easily maintainable. It doesn't make sense to me that Average Joe can operate a freaking anti-material rifle without breaking every bone in his shoulder, even if he has a military background.

More shotguns, more hunting rifles, more pistols (especially revolvers) and more ex-Soviet gear. This fictional nation is a former Soviet republic, after all.

I wouldnt mind seeing less high end gear and more low tech stuff. A .22 rifle would be sweet. I'm kinda torn. I love having the military grade stuff. But it seems to be a little too easy to find. The only balance I guess is the danger in going to the military areas.

In my last 3 deaths, I've gotten lucky enough to find the coyote backpack within the first few hours of my new life.

Honestly, I want the map to be bigger, add jets, add more Points of Interest, and a few more weapons, or a gunsmith type feature where you can clean your gun and add attachments and such.

Definitely needs more variation (ArmA 2 has a good amount to start with) just needs to have more rarity for anything that isn't Russian. So AK's and Makarov's are common, 1911's and Revolvers etc are less so, but still relatively common and then the western guns are very rare.

Reduce drop rates of the good guns and prevent duping and things would be pretty set.

Have ID's assigned to weapons too, limiting numbers of spawns per server (it tracks what it's spawned not what players have). That way not too many guns of the same type float about.

Also damage needs to be set based on real stats. Currently the stats are utter bollocks.

There are to many weapons around, and it is to much military loot to gain. Reduce rate of weapons spawning and even more on military weapons. If one wants a M16 go play BF3 or CoD....or btw not CoD it sucks.

Military weapons should only be found in military areas, such as bases and camps. They should be infested with zombies as well. But make civilian weapons like revolvers and hunting rifles available anywhere but still rare. Also no finding ammo for a LMG in a fire station, automatic weapons are not used to put out fires.

It's pretty easy to qualify why they are there. They are secure buildings that were used as a base of operations in the major cities by the military.

I think it's fine the way it is. Also, I loved the HL2 analogy :)

I say add the ability to mod weapons. Not sure how this could be realistically utilized, but I'm sure there are some weapon specialists who could help out in that department.

Variety is nice, as long as they are hard to get.

Shotguns and low-tier pistols and perhaps hunting-rifles should be the staples and military equiment really, really rare.
