Can't put chicken on stick. Or place fireplace on ground.

For some reason, I am unable to put a chicken breast on a stick. Or place a fireplace on the ground. Unfortunately, I discovered both (bugs?) at the same time. 
I found a cabin with a fireplace, where I was able to place a fireplace I crafted. After doing that, and lighting a fire, I proceeded to place a chicken breast onto a stick. To my surprise, I could not do that.

Have the mechanics changed? Why am I unable to place a fireplace on the ground? Or add a chicken breast to a stick?

Is it a server issue? Any ideas?

You need to sharpen the stick first. 

Also, you don't need to use a stick if you are using a fireplace in a building. There are slots for cooking and for smoking.

How do you sharpen the stick? I never had to do that before.

Put stick in hand, drag knife to combine, hold mouse button.

This. Inhouse fireplaces you can put it directly into a slot. Baking or smoking the meat are the options. 

Side note: not every building Lets you put a fireplace on the ground. (Smoke hazard simulation i think)

Some buildings you can put it on the doorstep whilst you sit safely out of the rain inside.

About sharpening the stick: how would you irl sharpen a stick? Same logic applies ingame. 

(Unfortunately not all irl logic applies ingame) 🤣
