What killed me?

Recommended Posts

I'm a nooby noobster and in my forays into the wild I have died or been killed in many ways. This has included zombie attack, blood loss, hunger, thirst, sickness, sledgehammer, machine gun and many other ways BUT each time I died I knew the reason why.

Recently I was wandering quietly through an orchard in broad daylight, some distance from any buildings, habitation or threats of any kind. My food, fluids, blood and health etc. were all good and there was nobody in sight. Suddenly, and for no apparent reason, up comes the 'You Are Dead' screen... no shot, bang or explosion and no attack from anywhere, simply 'You Are Dead', no explanation, nothing. I was particularly gutted as I was carrying particularly nice weapons at the time.

So what killed me?

I accept that death comes easily in this game but if you don't know what killed you how do you learn to play and avoid the same thing next time?

You did not hear the shot because it was meant for you.

it was a headshot, instant kill .. .  . the player was either camping or following you

Thanks all, guess it must have been a head shot. It's just a shame there wasn't a second or two of 'video afterlife' showing me fall to the ground dead, rather than one second I'm walking and the next I'm looking at the 'You're Dead' screen...

The 'Crusader' helmet I was wearing obviously didn't offer me the magical protection I thought it did... 😉... and now it presumably has a big hole in it... 😉

Thanks again.

Yeah the: you are dead scène is a bit anticlimatic. A ragdoll to death screen would be Nice.

But yeah definetly a headshot

Edit for the helmet. The helmets almost never saved my ass so i would see them mostly as cosmetic.

I've survived many headshots thanks to the military helmets, any other helmets are only good for pistols and melee

your helmets must be blessed, Ive tried every single helmet and none of them have saved me from a headshot, heck at one point I was fighting on the beach with a motorcycle helmet and I got knocked uncon while the other guy had no helmet, while aiming for his head with my beans.

the melee in this game is so shit lol it seems quite random except a 2 handed weapon seems to ko someone with a power attack everytime

Haha, there was I worried about where the next headshot was coming from when I got savaged to death by wolves. Them suckers soaked up a lot of shots but still got me... and I was wearing my best Santa beard and anti stab vest.

Oh well, back to square one - again  - is there any way to shortcut the grind to decent weapons?

Bury a drybag with some gear in the SE/other common spawn zone of your preference.

Yeah, grab a shotgun and load in a few slugs.  Go find a geared player camping around somewhere and sneak up and blast him basically anywhere on his torso.   Watch him uncon or die, kill, loot.  Rinse, repeat.

Think of armor as being able to absorb some of the damage received. It does not protect from high-caliber rounds doing what they are intended to do within the boundaries of the game. That thin sheet of metal the helm is made from wouldn't be as effective as a ballistics helmet.

I've seen plate carriers absorb a slug, and a .308 round, without knocking the survivor unconscious. Both shots were very short range for their respective weapons (about 4m for slug, 28m for .308).

Make sure ya double-tap them hard-plate reinforced vests boys and girls!

D'oh, what a brilliant suggestion - it hadn't occurred to me. Presumably you can hide a stash then return to it when you're next at that location on the same server... assuming you can find it again...

They last 45 days in the ground, you can dig them back up and re-bury to reset the persistence time.

Is this true for any buried items like crates, etc.?

@Trev_Bash : Make sure to take note of landmarks near your bury spot (such as a rock, a cluster of trees, a certain tree type, a building, a mountain ridge, whatever strikes your fancy)!

Yessir, @Kean__1, sir.

Thanks.  I wasn't sure.

.....if you don't (someone else was asking in another thread and I was curious as well), but do items in tents or above ground in barrels, crates, etc. expire after a lack of interaction with them too?  How about players who don't log back in on a Community server for a give period of time?  Do those items they have on their person get re-integrated into the pool so to speak?

.....sorry for the questions and detour.

How it works for tents, barrels, and crates above ground: By adding or removing an item, the persistence timer resets to 45 days for all items contained therein. Singular items will never disappear from those stashes, because the stash itself is the item affected by persistence, not it's contents. If items are disappearing, then you are most certainly dealing with a thief. I am unsure if opening a barrel lid, and closing or opening a tent door, counts as interaction, though I would presume it does.

Items on characters are permanent, and unaffected by persistence. Some community servers have altered persistence time-frames and may be different than the standard 45 days on vanilla servers.

Sorry for the wait, haven't been on in a bit!

No worries. Thanks a bunch for the info. I'll point the other member to this thread if I can find it again.
