Character skills from before the Zeds, learning skills

Recommended Posts

It would be cool if one could add a bit history to the character. Like choosing former occopation. And by choosing you got some uniqe skills. For example if you where a paramedic you would be able to preform more advanced first aid. Or car mechanic, Heli pilot. And it would be cool if you could learn more skills by for example reading book or been thoght by other players or both. And even get to craft uniqe items.

in this regard, the idea is good.. but that would make dayz 'scripted' again.. and that is the absolute thing they do NOT want this game to be..
sure it would 'add' something.. but the BEST creation and added 'story value' ultimately comes from your own MIND

want to be a car mechanic?
find the right clothing (once those are in) and roam the lands fixing cars for food.. only carrying a lug wrench as a weapon

want to be a medic?
find medical clothing or a lab coat and carry around med supplies.. read into things like cholera and how to treat them... HELP people survive

want to be a soldier? (who isn't since the start of days, kinda pisses me off)
find mil gear/M4/combat or mil boots/barret/pistol with silencer and HELP defend a settlement or town from raiders/bandits

it's not that hard tbh.. we've got (some) of the gear already.. more clothing is on the way I think.. plus the fact that zombies will likely carry stuff in future patches (hence the slots when they die)

want to be a Zombie hunter?
cross between a merc and a mil guy, find ur favorite weapon/ammo/pen/paper and tag off those pesky zeds when you're dropping them one by one (who's the first to reach 10K zed kills?!)

so.. as you can read my friend.. there's enough options in the game without a 'skill' to pick from, its all a matter of perspective and how you play the cards you're dealt.

goodluck surviving!

I can see this being a mod, but I don't think it's in the devs' vision of the game.

To expand on this, and it really would never exist in the vanilla game, it'd be neat if the profession you chose affected your starting gear as well, and if spawns were all over the map. All classes should spawn with a weapon (with some getting better weapons and gear than others at the cost of more specialist skills) but it was very, very survival focused. Think the 'Misery' mod from STALKER. Again, it would never be in vanilla but I'd give that a shot if it was a mod.

I just think that the whole "we dont want it to be "scripted"" thing is just an excuse to avoid doing the work of implementing this kind of mechanics.

Because:

  1. It wouldn´t be scripted, it is just some extra immersion to an unreal world with zombies. Any extra info about yourself or the world per se adds to that. I feel that RP is more of a scripting than giving random backgrounds to characters, because you have to come up with your own stuff, you know its fake and it isn´t immersive at all (at least for me). I mean, why would I want to be a mechanic in a zombie world? I need to survive and kill people, not to fix cars. Taking the extra work to find useless stuff it´s just out of the question for me. But spawning as one would give just the little touch to the character while you´re getting other stuff.
  2. It could be optional. Not everyone want´s it, so why don´t give the ones who do a shot?
  3. It would give initial guidelines for player interaction. If someone asks your name in-game, you would check the char name, say that, read some of your story and have a chat about the ingame you, not the real one. This would add so much to the current state of interactions. In the other side, if you don´t like it, you can just be yourself, you gonna get other cloth and stuff anyway, so there will be no difference after 30min of playing.
  4. It would add variety to the game. You would see like a lot of different people running around, not just the same bambi with a different color of cloth.

I mean there are more pros for the thing that cons, and the cons can easily be prevented. I just think devs are too lazy for this one lol

Would be nice, but honestly I think it would just end up as with the Vybor spawn, 98% of the Bambis committing suicide until they get the, guess what? ... The guy with the military background.

It would get old real quick as the other skills would be under represented which of course would end up with 98% of the people complaining that there are not enough medics to correctly heal the wounds of the guys with the military background or not enough mechanics with the skills to repair the vehicles.

Actually the very same guys that forgot that they are those who systematically killed those who decided to play with the medic or mechanic skills because that was so easy and so much fun.

actually the suicide thing is easy to get rid of:

  • Fixed spawn location for let´s say an hour or 2 (it could be an area also and only spawn where there are no other players too close, to avoid spawn-sniping)
  • Spawn timer (I already suggested a spawn timer that would beggin with a big time, that would reduce with every 10min of ingame time)
  • Permadeath rules

Most of them can (and I believe will) be implemented in the server side or in mods.

We've been there before, good old days (2 years ago) when you were arriving in Berezino just to see guys jumping from the highest buildings or frenetically running towards you begging you to put an end to their misery.

No way to punish someone for such behavior since a program cannot make the difference between an awkward player or a guy who jumps deliberately from the roof.

As some point it was pure mayhem, guys becoming aggressive if you were refusing to kill them, trying to punch you in hope that you would shoot them down.

On the forums people were constantly asking for the devs to have the suicide options implemented just to abuse the Vybor spawn.

That´s why I think it should be implemented on the server side or in mods. People will sign up for it knowing the consequences of their deaths :).

I would love to play in a server/mod with it. It would make it really exciting and ill have a yearly dose of adrenaline every-time I hear shots close to my location.

Public servers shouldn´t have that. They´re mostly played by arcade oriented players and everyone would go crazy with such rules. But the hardcore people will be really happy knowing that there´s a simulated death (a couple of hours at least) if they get shot
