Mark88 9 Posted December 16, 2015 I made a fireplace, but could not add the (8) rocks to turn it into an oven. I only tried using new UI and wondered if anyone else had a problem? I then tried just placing cooking pot(with meat inside) in the fireplace cargo slot. I could not view the meat and ended up badly damaging the pot. Any ideas? q.S Sachiel 470 Posted December 16, 2015 i made a fireplace the other day from rags + stick, attached wood, added 3x sticks to the slots to try to keep it alive abit longer, and also threw in 3x chicken breasts. Before long the chicken breasts were Ruined. I left the fire, to get my axe (as i realised that cutting down a tree with axe puts a stick on your back, and when you put away axe, it drops to ground...) so went and found the axe, and then couldn't find my fire because it died within the few minutes it was alive :''(
blackberrygoo 1416 Posted December 16, 2015 (edited) You can't put cooking pots directly on fires , nor can you place meat directly on fires (unless you want to ruin them). The only way to cook with a regular fire place is to have a cooking tripod , a stick for a kabob , or upgrade to the stone oven fireplace (not sure if this works ATM, but you may be using the wrong stones to construct it). If you have a cooking pot just find a tripod and you're good to go , if you have no cooking pot break off a long stick from a tree and place your meat on that to roast over a fire . There's only 2 slots that you can put fuel into a fire , otherwise the fuel will become ruined (drop the fuel into the title of the fireplace , not below in the inventory). q.S Sachiel 470 Posted December 16, 2015 Ah cool. So you can only attach items, not place them in inventory to prolong fire life? And when you say place on stick, i noticed that after skinning and quartering a man the human steaks went straight onto the stick... do i just hold it in my hands close to the fire or something? Use TAB to check the progress of the steak, or will the actual item obj graphic change from raw to cooked too? Beans good sir!

I suggest keeping the inventory open to see the texture change there , as I never really see the actual meat change color (maybe I never realized lol)! Bon Appetit!

To cook anything inside the pot, it needs to contain either lard or a sufficient amount of water- you can use a camping cooker (blue gas canister + cooker attachment) + put a cooking pot on that. - if you want to make the stone oven, you need to use the pickaxe and harvest big rocks, first. These can be broken down into smaller ones (for the fireplace), too. Then drag the pot on top of the oven . Best and easiest way, is making a fire and putting your food on a long stick. Watch it get cooked and remove from the stick after the second phase of cooking. I think if it gets too dark or is too raw, there is a minor chance of sickness. But any cooked meat should be fine to eat; fish too, of course! You can also cook all vegetables, they change model now, too. Which is weird, because I put cooking pots directly into fires when camping ALL THE TIME. Rake out some coals onto a flat surface, put the pot on top, you are good to go. Cooking pots and pans are made of metal. A fire is not going to get nearly hot enough to damage them. This game sometimes, man. The "survival" aspects tend to not make much sense.

You can even cook meat directly on the ambers, irl. The heat sterilzes the surface and you just brush off the ashes before eating. Spitroast would also be nice to have for larger chunks of deer or entire rabbits/chicken. As far as I am concerned, cooking is one of the things that is already pretty deep and well-developed, though. I'd rather see them concentrate efforts on some of the more pressing matters. But it would surely be nice to have better options in the future. To be fair though, cooking is pretty neat and sitting around a fire with a bunch of your mates beats opening a can of beans together ;) One simple addition I would like to see if that we can sterilize/cook water when we put a canteen on the embers or on the fire. Whyherro123 2283 Posted December 16, 2015 You consider the cooking mechanics "deep and well-developed"? What the hell kind of game are you playing? We can cook in two fashions: baking and boiling. That's ..... that's it. And, we can only cook single items. No combining items to make actual, you know, meals. No combining items to make stews, no making of broth using animal bones. Hell, we still can't fucking cook rice, nor mix powdered milk with some water. And, according to the "nutritional information" available on the wiki, cooked vegetables are literally in every way deficient compared to raw ones. Boiling food actually gives you less water than baking it. That .... isn't how it works in real life. Cooking in Day Z, alongside literally every game mechanic that doesn't involve new guns or vehicles, has essentially been ignored for the last couple months. We can put food into a pot with some water/lard, now!!!! Woop de fucking do.
