VaTiS 26 Posted August 18, 2015 It would be more realistic if you had to read a book to gain the knowledge needed before crafting something .. Change some books to work as manuals instead of having useless novels etc .

Sperglord 76 Posted August 18, 2015 (edited) Are you talking about skill books that you MUST read in order to craft something or just instructions on how many of what items you need to craft something etc? Edited August 18, 2015 by Sperglord

Rexarious 2 Posted August 18, 2015 That would be cool to like find a book on trapping or how to fix an engine. Have it tell you what you need for that engine or to trap game.

Evil Minion 943 Posted August 19, 2015 Makes sense for more complicated tasks and also provides an excellent justification. But it should not go as far as blocking even the easiest tasks or crafting without the book. As soft skills seem to be coming doing things many times might allow characters to ditch the manual after some time. But no magic "open the book to learn the skill" please. Helix2000 128 Posted August 19, 2015 is this skill carried over from life to life? cos i don't really want to hunt for an obscure book to relearn how to make a wall for the fifth time. i think books should shorten the time it takes to do something (eg make a splint, or craft a snare) but not make it impossible. i know that without a book, many people would be able to eventually make a shelter, having instructions would make it faster. but some more complex crafting knowledge and recipes should absolutely be documented in books. Syphonz 64 Posted August 22, 2015 I can see the book titles now. "Bambi Killing for Dumbies." But, this could go along with soft skills that the devs have planned. You wanna learn how to fix a car? Find a book, read it, THEN you can fix it. I like how every single survivor in the game magically knows how to fix a truck from scratch. <_<
blackberrygoo 1416 Posted August 22, 2015 I don't think they should be mandatory , after all many people can Learn without a book or tutor ... I think if you DO find a decent book worth reading it should only give a plus to that ability , so let's say you have an automechanics book in your inventory .. As long as you read the pages or at least flip through them your character will extract pieces from trucks with less damage to tools and the truck pieces themselves . This way it's not mandatory to find a certain book , but rather a kind of privelege or treat , when you finally find the book , because it I'll give you a definite edge on something's while its in your inventory . sushimaster 6 Posted August 23, 2015 (edited) yeah, maybe if all our characters were meant to have only a preschool level of education... no offense or anything, but yeah... it isn't like the crafting items are complex chemical structures, require circuit diagrams or anything like that... but there's an idea, if you could craft more complex things & those would things require book smarts, additional tools, etc. Like repairing a severely damaged vehicle, for instance. Never once came across the Czech equivalent of an O'rileys or an Autozone in Chernarus... could be interesting. Maybe even a radioshack sort of store (oldschool radioshack)... more stores like that in general would fill out the world a bit. given the quantity of items in the real world & the lack of things in DayZ.. You'd think you'd eventually come across a house overflowing with all that missing stuff.. what did the zombies eat it all or something? Where's all the garbage? Sorry.. off topic.. yeah, the craftable items are kind of meant to balance out the lack of important things... requiring a hard to find book on how to tie a piece of leather to a stick would be counter-intuitive.
