DayZ really needs more "trash" loot

Recommended Posts

Aside from the occasional book, pretty much every bit of loot you'll find is useful in someway, and most of the time useful for everyone.

Where are the rotten fruits, flat soda's, expired cans of food, general trash?

Even the mod has "trash" which equated to tin cans.

I'm assuming it's done like this to keep server performance in mind, but I find it hard to believe that everything you find would be useful, no matter what backstory you out behind it.

Thoughts?

One man's trash....

I find myself leaving lots behind because i wouldnt want to carry it. Pens, baseball hats, prison tshirts, pipe wrench, damaged shoes etc. There are many things all ready in game that most people would consider trash.

in the mod you can throw tin cans to distract zombies when sneaking through a town - they aren't trash at all

You also use cans to boil water in the mod for your PET bottles/Canteen.  Hopefully they get server performance to a point that they have enough overhead to even do this but right now considering the servers can't even handle zombies yet this seems like a needless tie up of server resources.

The trash loot in the mod has a use too.  You can throw cans and bottles to create a noise that distracts the zombos and gets them moving to the location of the sound.

Books are extremely useful. Tear page for kindling, and burn if you don't have axe.

Server resource shouldn't apply. The amount of loot spawning right now could be cut in half or near, and replaced with trash.

Its rather pointless to argue or complain any about loot distribution at this point (hopefully soon they will have more finite control)  CLE will hopefully change the whole game (especially being able to change things on the fly) making it more of a survival experience

For me the OP obviously has the final product in mind and I think it could be nice to feel that disappointment when you think you found something useful just to find out it is no longer eatable or ruined beyond any practical use :)

Trash loot will become a thing much, much later in development. At this point, not only do the servers not have the spare processing power for this, but the devs are only interested in testing out stuff people are actually going to use. Atmosphere comes later. Don't forget that DayZ SA isn't even a 'game' yet in the sense most gamers think of it - it's an alpha build.

in SA, you can rip out a page of a book and use it for kindling, you can use it to make a fireplace (according to the DayZ wiki, I never tested it myself), and you can read them, or at least at one point you could.

...sorry, I'm a bookworm, and needed to mention that.

I like the idea of finding unusable loot, in a sense. But I don't think it's the best idea, at least for the time being.
I kinda liked it when food could spoil and stuff. But considering the stage DayZ SA is going through, the less trouble with the basic necessity things, the better.
The whole idea of playing DayZ SA at this point, is to test it and give the devs feedback. Like a lot of people, I so do want more hardcore survival element. But considering the game is still in alpha, and a lot of things are bugged out need to be worked on constantly, maybe it's not the best time for the faux-testers to be distracted with very hardcore elements.

I'm waiting for bananas to come back and banana peels to be as deadly as bear traps for breaking legs... but maybe not as deadly as the fire station stairs, which not only can break your legs but can outright kill you.

Does anyone remember when you threw the tin cans that they sounded like grenades going off? It was majestic.

Hmm the trash Idea isn't a bad idea. The wife and me was scrurring the northeastern parts of the map, and with the lack of zombies atm for target  practicing (and other people),we came to think of the idea of piling cans or trash cans to shoot at... that could be a really nice feature - creating a persistant selfsufficient camp, with targets to practice shooting skills...

these items even have different ranges on which zombies move towards them, the best where empty whiskey bottles if i remember correctly,

made zombies walk towards where the bottle shattered from up to 100 or so meters, second best was empty soda cans, followed by empty tin cans

could ruin the day of a sniper if you directed zombies into their direction, or force a player to leave cover, like a time-delayed zombie grenade

yeah, i've done my share of sneaking through towns in the mod, the good thing is that you can catch people off guard because everyone relied on zombie aggro showing where players are so much^^

the problem with trash though is, once there is every loot spot filled with trash, it won't ever become something else, at least that was one problem in the mod

tin cans etc were just leaved untouched, so the spots that got filled up with trash cans never had a chance to re-populate with something usefull

no idea how this would work with CLE though

Trash being left behind from using consumables was also a fairly effective way to track people in the mod. In due time.
