Firearms affecting hearing

Recommended Posts

Mentioned it in another thread... the fact that you can fire off an entire magazine and maintain your hearing-

I think it may also help discourage the proliferate use of firearms within the game- if shooting dampened your hearing for a certain amount of time afterwards. A couple minutes of ringing in the ear after a shot... continued use resulting in longer term hearing loss. Might be a nice way to balance things out!

Anyway- just an opinion. Thoughts?

I actually really do like this idea.

But of course they should add some ear protection to counter that, just to be fair.

Ah! But I thought of that...

It would be "over the ear" protection- which would be visible and would actually hint towards your intentions. If I approach someone with my hearing protection on... then that will likely suggest that I'm planning on firing my weapon... If I need to fire my weapon because not firing it will result in me being killed- then so be it... it's worth the ringing in my ears for a bit.

That's the thought, anyway...

They could make it in-ear plugs, we used them at work, hardly noticeable :)

Yeah, ACE for ArmA 2 and 3 (is that official or just a ripoff, the A3 one?) had the hearing loss and protection if I remember correctly. And it runs on A2 and A3, different mods themselves however, but since DayZ is "ArmA 2.5" then it should be easily ported if its not a feature in the vanilla game.

Hello there

Im a fan of the ACE3 hearing system.

many weapons are tolerable without plugs (hearing may degrade over time) but the heavier calibers give a definite "ring" in the ears after use and can cause temporary deafness if over abused.

Earplugs solve this issue but slightly muffle the sound of the environment.

Earplugs should be findable but other forms or user ear defence should be allowed. Rags etc.

Rdgs

LoK

PS the A3 one is "official" and merges several similar mods inc the Ace team's one.

I'm never going to reconsider shooting a person because of temporary deafness if I want that player dead.  That's just unreasonable.

Lol

Then pull the trigger all day long... That's a measurement you've already made. If it's worth your while then knock yourself out.

Seriously do some people just weigh in to be argumentative? I think I made it pretty clear that the intention was meant to provide some element of disadvantage to unceremoniously shooting everything you see. If that's what you want to do then hammer away... And enjoy an hour of ringing in your ears.

It seems to me that he replied to argue that a temporary loss of hearing is not a real disadvantage, or at least not enough of one to cause players to reconsider shooting someone.

Fair enough but loss of hearing is still something I'm confident is a necessary repercussion of the use of said executions regardless of whether or not its part of the thought process I spoke of... With larger caliber weapons

I like this system, and it should be even more likely to ring indoors. It'll encourage improvised suppressor usage and make .22s have an advantage in that they're too quiet to ring.
