Steam Achievements concept

Recommended Posts

While struggling to use the new 0.57 content to "live off the land" I had noticed something big that DayZ is missing, achievements. Achievement hunting is always fun to do in just about every steam game out there. In DayZ however, it would make you feel like you've really gone a long way since having first bought the game. Now I know this is an Alpha build and it may take forever before the Devs even begin to work on something like this, but I'd like to share some achievements that I would like to see added when that time does come.

DARWINISM: kill a fellow survivor and take his/her gear

CANNIBALISM: Eat a human steak

HANNIBALECTAR: eat 50 human steaks

MICHAEL PHELPS: swim 600 meters strait (the amount it takes to get to prison island)

RUNNING SIMULATOR: run a total of 15000 meters

SIR HICKS-A-LOT: find a teddy bear and take it with you(for the lulz xD)

EXPERIMENTAL: die of hunger 3 times in a row

JAMPAGE: kill 5 survivors in 1 minute

If there are any other achievements you guys would like to see in-game, feel free to mention them in the comments :D

I know some of these achievements are a bit silly and most likely wont make it in the game, but these are the achievements I personally want to hunt for and I hope you agree too ;)

Give the kids what they want, as long as it doesnt take away from the actual development.

Personally i could not care less about acheivements, but i know alot of people who love them, for no reason :P

Let them have it, in the last month of BETA.

I would like it if there were more real achievements and less "you will eventually get there" medals. For example every achievement might only count for a single life. If you die you have to start anew. This way achievement hunting fits into the general concept of the game and gives you yet another reason to try and stay alive.

I wonder if that even possible with Steam, do you know of other games who have done this on Steam?

But +1 for the idea, it would make achievements much more fun and challenging.

it's definitely possible for the achievement to only apply to a single life. However the counter has to be handled by the game, not Steam itself. There are other games that have things like this. For example in Dark Souls PTDE there is an achievement to collect all of the rare weapons in the game, but they must all be collected on a single character, not over multiple. Edited by OnionOfShame

PVK II has an achievement that requires you to kill 5/10 enemies in a single life and in CS:S there is an achievement to score 5 headshot kills in a single round. It's definitely possible and probably also more interesting if Steam doesn't show your process before.

For the same reason when achievements were to be added there should only be a few in very late beta to test whether they are working (maybe as special beta achievements) while the majority should only be available after release.

In this case I would like to see the following types:

  • Newbie achievements for doing certain things for the first time (e.g. Kill your first zombie.)
  • Joke achievements for getting yourself in a very special situation (e.g. Get back up after one hour of coma*.)
  • Real achievements for completing a certain task in one life (e.g. Bring back 10 survivors from coma.)

I couldn't care less about "grinding achievements" (e.g. Kill 10000 zombies.) and think they might even conflict with the games concept causing achievement hunters to get reckless in their pursuit. Also they are boring.

Leather Addict:Wear a full leather set

This would be kinda flexible since you dont need to craft it in order to get this achievement.

I agree this kinda thing should not take too much from development of other features more like the icing on the cake.

The only achievement I wouldnt mind seeing is a total hours/days survived in game until inevitably killed.

Something to aim for with each new spawn.

I believe they should be steam counted and designed to encourage players to try out certain features of the game. They should be the last feature implemented though, so everyone starts out on the same level. My ideas:

Marksman - Achieve a headshot on a survivor from more than 300m away.

No Place Like Home - Pitch a tent.

Here's Johnny! - Kill a survivor with a firefighter's axe.

Social Darwinism - Kill a survivor and take an item from his corpse.

Shish Kebob - Kill a survivor with a rifle's bayonet.

The Beacon - Light an Improvised Torch.

The Saviour - Bandage a wounded survivor.

Hannibal Lecter - Consume a Human Steak.

The Red Guard - Kill a survivor with a Mosin 91/30.

Robin Hood - Kill a survivor with a bow.

John Wayne - Kill a survivor with a Repeater.

The Alaskan - Kill a survivor with Winchester Model 70.

The Soldier - Kill a survivor with an M4A1.

The Terrorist - Kill a survivor with an AKM.

The SWAT - Kill a survivor with an MP5-K.

The Boomstick - Kill a survivor with a Shotgun.

You Feelin' Lucky? - Kill a survivor with a Magnum.

The Assassin - Kill a survivor with a derringer.

The Peashooter - Kill a survivor with a .22.

Mike Tyson - Knock a survivor out with your fists.

Oops! - Give a survivor a blood transfusion with incompatible blood types.

The Better Man - Refrain from killing a survivor you knocked out.

The Angel - Revive an unconscious survivor.

The Hostage - Restrain a survivor.

Fireworks - Explode a fuel browser.

Watch Your Step - Kill a survivor with a landmine.

Walk It Off - Break a survivor's legs.

Broom Broom! - Get in a vehicle.

Go Fish - Catch a fish with a rod.

Wrong End of The Food Chain - Kill a predator.

The Knockout Game - Knock out a survivor with a stun baton.

Street Sweeper - Kill 100 zombies.

The Mechanic - Fix a vehicle part.

Yoink! - Steal an item from another survivor's tent.

The Chef - Cook raw meat.

I will add to this when I think of more!

More ideas:

Roadkill - Kill a survivor with a vehicle.

Mayday, Mayday! - Disable a helicopter in flight.

Gotcha! - Catch a game animal with a snare.

The Jackpot - Loot an item from a helicopter crash site.

My opinion of achievements is the same as Handgun_Hero. I spent countless hours doing stupid crap to earn achievements on the Xbox 360 and finally came to the realization (after YEARS of doing this) that achievements should serve to enhance the game, not act as a pathetic attempt to keep doing the same mindless tasks over and over again. Achievements should reward players for their hard work, and pointless grinding should never be something you strive to be rewarded for in my opinion. These should be badges of honor or rites of passage. They should motivate you to explore all that the game has to offer, not just what immediately grabs your attention. Achievements should encourage you to wander off the beaten path, not repeat a task endlessly.

While they've confirmed there will be achievements, I really hope they revoke the idea.  The last thing I want is shit popping up reminding me I'm playing a video game, and "rewarding" me for doing trivial shit.

I don't think we need any more incentive to kill other survivors. If there are achievements, I think they should be for learning survival techniques.  Killing an animal, making a fire, catching a fish, pitching a tent, crafting a backpack, and achievements for various medical actions performed on another survivor.  I also like the idea that you would earn these each life.

i would hate to see achiements in dayz.

i can already imagine the "sorry dude for the freshspawn kill, it was for my steam achievement"... . i would not like that a small window pop-up the right of my screen in a game like dayz too.
