Schadenfreude Island

Recommended Posts

Any ideas why they don't put something out here on the island as a cool little Easter Egg? Like maybe one of those grave markers to represent the poor bastard that gets marooned out there in the video? A couple trees and a rock. Also, why do these islands exist?

Allow me to explain, good fellow:

It is my understanding -- and someone please correct me if I'm wrong -- that anything outside the boundaries of the map is unable to be "developed" because it's just randomly generated nothingness. Coordinates must still exist outside this area because your character is able to be saved outside the boundaries just like it would anywhere within the boundaries, but I don't think it saves anything you put there other than your character itself and the items they possess. I can confirm from my original journey that it is indeed possible to do things like build a campfire out there, and in general I think you can do most anything you're able to on a similar surface within the boundaries of the normal map.

These islands exist simply because they fall within the two "directions" of the map that contain water. Go north or west into the debug plains, and you'll see random terrain for as far as you can walk that includes tall peaks and very low valleys; south and east simply have water to fill in the areas below sea level. There are many islands to the north off the east coast (see: Weyland's thread) and three that we know of to the south/southeast other than the one this thread is about.

Hope that was helpful :)

Weyland tried it, he ended up in the middle of the ocean and had to commit suicide. I thought maybe waterproof clothing could help, ballistic helmet, fireman's clothing, drybag, SPOSN backpack and rainjackets are the least absorbent.

Yea man, I remember that day. Auto swim, drink a beer, did some chores, checked the swim, drink a beer, cut the lawn, checked the swim, etc.

I found 33 and named them all so don't even think of trying to name them! They're mine you understand, mine!  :P

Still have the other 2 videos to finish.  >:(

Success!!!  I made landfall on Schadenfreude island!!!  Due to server restarts it was nightfall when I got there but I GOT THERE.

Forgot to ask: what exactly was your outfit for this swim? Looks like Gorka pants, a rain coat, and a hard hat?

Ok everyone, I've got a new update. A friend of mine set out to the island this morning and began to get hypothermic within 30 minutes and had to turn back. He was outfitted with all water resistance gear but still got the chills. I went over to the server he was on and sat in the water a while and I also got cold indications on my inventory dashboard. Im now begining to think its not the gear your wearing but the server your on (or maybe both). I did notice on his server I could see my breath as my character moved around the map but didnt have that on mine. In the morning I'm going to go for a swim on my server with normal clothing and see if I get cold indications.

I've noticed lately on experimental that I can sprint around all day and never warm up, but after the sun sets, I have to be dunking myself to stay cool.

Has anyone tried a moonlit swim for the island lately?

Wasn't Mizzou's original trip at night? That would totally make sense, but Mizzou was successful at night... weird.

Mizzou, you did do this on 0.55 didn't you? Now I'm worried. Odin and I were planning a trip and we're all ready to go, but you're planting the seeds of doubt  :|  :(

EDIT: Was your friend wearing a vest, do you know?

I dunno if it's still the case, but there was a point where different servers were running either "hot" or "cold" presumably because they had different seasons set.  Some you'd constantly be heating up, even in starting gear and some you'd be cooling off.

My trip began during daylight hours but it got dark as I swam out. I just made the trip the other night and yes it was .55. No my friend wasn't wearing a vest. Are vests glitched?  I am currently doing water experiments to try and figure it all out but there doesn't seem to be a set pattern. I believe its a server thing but I'll post more if I stumble upon something tangible.

If you decide to make the swim keep an eye on your warning icons. If you get a yellow cold indication turn back. It will escalate to hypothermia. If your going to get this icon it will be within the first 15 minutes of the swim. When I made my successful swim I never got any cold indication icons, only cooling off messages.

Thanks for the tip. I have a pretty good idea of what I'm capable of in the event that I do begin to get cold. I'm confident I can make it either way :)

Sigh. We failed again. Not sure how or why, but despite being as prepared as we possibly could be (almost hyperthermic before getting in the water and full waterproof gear) we became hypothermic and died after only an hour. We actually made it farther last time (an hour and a half) being less prepared.

I think there's a bug where you basically become immune to hot/cold effects. Your body temperature drops to 35 (I think) but you aren't "cold". I've had this happen to me a couple times but I haven't been able to isolate the cause. That you were always cooling off but never cold sounds familiar from this bug.

Has anyone done anything to see if different servers are different temperatures?

I'm starting to wonder because I spawned in fresh on exp today and I can't shake my cold status even though I'm wearing a motorcycle helmet and alternating sprint/jog. I made a wrong turn and and don't have a hope of fixing my stats because the cold is eating calories faster than I can put them in with berries and apples, usually I get through this part pretty easy.

It used to be that "season" (month of the year, or what really amounts to a set ambient temperature) was tied directly to the build of the game. On Experimental, that often changed with every new update in order to test various things. I would be very surprised if temperature varied by server on Stable, simply because I can't think of any good reason why it would or how.

Seems very likely that OP experienced a bug allowing them to stay a constant temperature. Doubtful it's easily replicated, and it would sort of be cheating to do so anyway :p

That makes more sense, I think you're right and they may have just lowered the temp in exp feeling things out. Overall I think it's cool though if the game is going to be a good survival sim, a wrong turn should be able to kill you just as easy as a any player.

This sounds to be the most reasonable explanation because my friend and I have been trying, on multiple servers for two days, and have been unable to get more then half an hour out before a cold indication pops up on the dashboard. We then turn around, head back, get warmed up and try a different server (rinse and repeat). The day I made it to Schadenfreude I not only swam east without cold issues but just prior to that I swam the entire coastline from Svetlo to Skalisty without issues. I thought it might be server related but now I'm getting cold warnings on that same server. The only other big difference was the character had died from thirst on the return trip. Its possible that the character its self had the glitch when it was generated. I wish I could figure it out because we were trying to set up a military tent and establish the first Schadenfreude outpost before the wipe. I think I'm through with swimming for a while, I'm going to go back to getting KOS'd.

BTW, you can drop stuff from your inventory in the middle of the ocean and it will appear in the vicinity screen. you can pick it back up or even swap items with another players. Neat trick but I cant think of a situation where it would be useful.

Thanks for doing all that in the name of science! :) It's been so long since anyone has been interested in the island, so it was nice to see it get some attention for a while.
