Idea for Body Persistance + Crows

An idea i had in regards to body persistance that is, after you've been killed or died your body will de-spawn after 10 or so minutes removing all loot you once had on you. It's not really a great mechanic for balance as it removes the feeling of danger and the act of scavenging loot from dead players as most of the time their despawns before anyone can grab anything worth while.

 

So the idea I had was instead of them outright de-spawning after 10 minutes, perhaps have them become a "rotted" state after 10 minutes, the loot items naturally degrade until ruined and then de-spawn allowing with the corpse. How would this occur you ask? To start with it would attract carrion animals such as Crows. A flock of crows would circle and gather around a body and peck at it for food, the resulting "pecking" would damage much of the loot inside the corpse until ruined and then the corpse itself would slowly disappear over a course of time. Since the likelyhood of your loot being heavily damaged after an attack is extremely likely, it's very possible much of it will de-spawn, be looted or be ruined by the time you return but at least some items may be salvalable.

 

Crows are the first "Scavenger" animals I'd love to see in DayZ, perhaps in the future Wolves, Dogs and Bears could perhaps drag dead bodies to dens and nests (where it acts kind of like a dynamic tent spawning damaged/badly damaged loot)

I like this Idea ! I suggested the same thing when standalone first started but with vultures instead of crows lol ! I believe the devs have talked about dead body's decaying (bodies disappear now after ten minutes as a placeholder clean up mechanic , it will be longer soon and hopefully with the decay aspect the devs talked about , crows and scavenger animals would fit perfectly if that were the case )!

Atleast at the moment though with the item persistence, the gun and backpack does stay. It's scared me a little a few times coming across a random backpack and gun in the middle of the street

Hi everyone,

can't find any dev talking about dead bodies persistance, can someone show me a recent topic where they're talking about it ?

I'm resurrecting this topic because I think the actual timer for dead bodies is really too short.

When will devs increase the timer ? I know it affects performance to have a lot of dead bodies everywhere, but we - alpha testers - are becoming crazy to not be able to loot a body because it disappears while you were trying to finish the remaining members of the crew you were fighting to.

a 30 min timer would be really appreciated for bodies of players killed by other players, and a 1 or 5 minutes timer for players who commit sucide (lot of sucide on the coast)

It's rare to see a gunfight last longer than 30 min, but real gunfights always last much longer than 10.

The timer is way to short. Even if it was like the mod where you had until the server restart which was plenty of time!. ALSO - In before sook arse players saying " aww man but you can get back and loot ya body where u died" well so what they need to make the game harder in the respect also.

But rotting bodies would be damn great !
