Truck-eating trees.

Recommended Posts

Yesterday I logged in to go move the trucks to a new base, and pick up a few bags I dropped while looting--berofe I realized that persistence didn't wipe this week.  I never got the chance.  I usually park my trucks next to a tree so that any potential thief would need to tread lightly.  This time it backfired.

I managed to open the door and get in without incident, but as soon as I fired-up the engine, my truck was snatched up between two trees, like a hammok.  There I was sitting in a V3S cargo, suspended a couple meters above the forest floor, the trucks axles at nearly 45 degrees from horizontal.  My choice was clear:  get out on the drivers side and risk dying to a ten-foot drop, or use the passenger door and risk being crushed.

I got crushed.  Damn you truck-eating trees!!!!

I'm still kicking myself for not taking a screenshot while I was inthe suspended truck.

A server restart would fix it, chop down the trees aswell though.

Btw, do what's logical about the trucks. If it looks like It's going to kill you, then remain in the truck till the server restarts. Then you'll get outside of the truck, but never ever log out. That puts you outside of the truck and gives the chance for the truck to run you over.

I'm speaking as a person who has a lot of experience with trucks, both death wise and surviving wise.

I also can save any truck from any condition no matter what. The only thing that is not fixable is a flipped truck, (can be countered with a new truck, ram it sideways) but other than that, all stuck truck incidents have a solution. And every single one is  unique.

Or any other online multiplayer game...

After I read the first few lines I thought 'Where is the screenshot?!'  B)

Those trucks are death traps..literally

After I read the first few lines I thought 'Where is the screenshot?!'  B)

Those trucks are death traps..literally

When I approached the truck everything was fine.  I forgot the screenshot because I was talking to someone who needed a pickup, and was directing him to another truck I had stashed.  I still forgot the screenshot though, I'm working it into muscle memory.  I even forgot to take a screenshot when we made it back and drove another truck under the treed one.

Still, never heard of a truck eating tree before, and I've taken the four-year-old-with-a-tonka-truck-ride plenty of times, but never been in a truck hammok before.

I'll see if I can duplicate the results, for those that prefer picture-books, rather than a thousand words on it.

I usually try to stock up, so I can just come back and get them when convenient, but you might be hearing from me next time I cause anything novel.

Lately I like to RP as an eastern European taxi driver...  "I park in tree, you no like!?!"

True, best thing is to wait for a server restart. I usually just switch servers if something like this happens, respawn and get out of the way. Then I return to the old server. It sometimes helps to shoot a truck that is stuck, in order to put it back on the ground again. I know this sounds silly, but it already worked in Arma :) And it doesn't hurt the trucks.

I am a bit concerned with hitting invisible bumps and collisions of some trees that are far away from the road, yet somehow crash the truck. Right now this doesn't matter, but I will be quite crossed when I collide with something invisible and it ruins the truck, in the future. So far, I am having a great time with trucks, despite the glitches and problems they sometimes have. On the whole, they are a lot better now than 2 weeks ago! Just one thing I don't understand: the 2 seated truck accelerates a lot faster and drives more stable than the three seater. Kinda wondering why that is, as they are the same model and drive about the same.

I wasn't sure if logging out in a stuck truck would kill me, but now I know a few more workarounds.  My driving is sketchy enough without trees stopping the truck dead in the middle of the road, or magical ramps in the middle of fields tossing the truck around.

If anyone played State of Decay on XBOX 360, that is a good example of how not to do vehicle physics in the finished game.  The two fastest cars, the rally hatchback and carballo, could easily outrun the renderer.  I lost count of how many top tier vehicles that I PERMANENTLY destroyed by hitting a fire hydrant that didn't render until my car already exploded.

I usaully have multiple trucks on my "home server," so I'm more likely to just wait it out and go use a different truck.  The tree-eaten truck was safely on the ground when I came back to check on it yesterday.  I'm just never sure when it is safe to get out, if my view of the truck matches what the truck is actually doing.  I've seen people flip trucks and get out while I was still seeing the truck taking 100 foot bounces, because he said it looked fine; then died to an epileptic truck.  I hate to lower myself to ghosting a truck, but maybe it's the only way sometimes.

I can't wait until we have tree eating trucks rather than truck eating trees. Anyone seen talk of any effects such as if you hit a tree hard enough it'll fall down or anything like that?

HaHaHa, yes!  Nothing makes feel better about having a big ol' cargo truck stopped dead in its tracks by a knee-high sapling.

Btw, I found that most times when you are unsure if a truck will kill you upon entering or not, shoot it :)

The reason is that this grounds the truck in the world, as it needs to drop a few inches upon server restarts. If you shoot it just once, the truck will settle in the right location and you can get in and drive it out of the thicket again. I'd to that first, even if I could saw off the tree blocking it, etc. If the truck isn't grounded before you get in, it kills you every time, even if the drop is just miniscule.
