4 hours in...

Recommended Posts

I got this game a few days ago with 6 hours logged on so far. I love survival games, post apocalypse games and Zombies games. So I felt this game would fit me like a glove.

After logging onto a server, without knowing where I was, I spent the next four hours of the game exploring towns, scavenging in houses and improving my character to a point where I felt healthy and energized. I had a found tons of loot. But the game felt odd, after spending all this time, I had only come across a few Zombies, which were easy to dispose of and no human players at all. The would felt empty, like I was wondering through a ghost town and to be frank, a little bit boring. Wouldn’t it be more realistic if the world was filled with more Zombies and less “fresh” fruit? Perhaps this will change over time.

Then out of nowhere, while scavenging in a home, I bumped into another player, a fresh spawn more or less. Way cool!~ First human interaction. We both had mic’s and chatted a bit. He knew I was a noob as I was fumbling with my keys trying to make things happen. Now I know what this game was before I purchased it. I knew there was a very good chance he was looking for an opportunity to kill me and take my loot. and I was almost curious to see if he would try that. I had my shotgun ready on me incase I needed to engage in some action. None the less, I was super friendly to him, I gave him a ton a free loot to get started and he said he would lead the way as I stayed behind him.

That’s when things took a turn for the worse. I knew full well he might try to pull a sneaky, but I didn’t expect what came next. He turned around and pulled out the .357 that I gave him (Yes, such an incredibly stupid move on my part, lesson learned) and pointed it my direction. But no problem right, I was ready for a firefight, when suddenly I noticed my shotgun wasn't equipped, also what was odd was that he wasn’t firing right away. So I went into my inventory screen and quickly tried to equip my shotgun, lo and behold, it would not equip no matter how many times I tried. He still had not fired yet, so I figure I would make a run for it, and yet again, more strangeness, I could not run, it was like I was running in slow motion. Then… BANG, I’m dead.

my question is~ is what happen to me the effect of glitches, my own clumsiness, or the work of a hacker?

If I died in a fair and square fight, I can accept that as part of the realism, the survival cut throat reality of the Zombie world where dog eats dog. But the way I died didn’t seem realistic at all, it felt crappy and underhanded and frankly, like the work of a hacker.

So I spend the next two hours getting killed quite often strange enough. Having to, in a way, really learn the game. Getting killed by cold, starvation or whatever it was. Learning that server hopping can kill you and Finally bumping into something that vaguely resembles a zombie “horde” (Not sure if 5 zombies can be considered a horde) and getting killed by them.

In my humble opinion of being a six hours player, this game would be much more rewarding if there was more PvE elements, such as much more zombies. It would give people more of an incentive to team up if the zombies represent more of a genuine threat. But as is, I think I will now stay as a lone wolf.

Welcome to Chernarus, where humanity comes to die in a hail of bullets and axe heads!

welcome to the game, you sound like a nice and reasonable guy, that´s great :D

regarding to the graphics/textures, the game stands on a quite old engine, most problems result from it. the buildings and their textures (and quite the entire map) are also way older than the standalone. The team is step by step trying to improve everything, but in my personal opinion you can expect heavy bugs way beyond 2015.

What leads me to your player encounter: the problem with actions not working can result from lags. the moving problem is quite new to me and i hope it was no hacker, the team focussed on that issue during the last months.

zombie development is right at the moment a big issue, so on that we can expect improvements soon hopefully.

but as i said, i personally do not expect a "optical and mechanically very good and fluent working" game till 2017, they´ll improve it step by step, and that´s what the alpha is for. i sometimes see it more as a pre-alpha.

The zombies are not a threat right now. Just annoying to deal with, though the .55 update is bringing back hoards of zeds. As for the player interaction my best guess would be dsync caused you to run slowly

Thanks for the response Impulz, I actually removed my complaint about the graphics before I saw your post. Later thinking about it, I felt it was to harsh of a complaint for a first post, but thanks anyway for the info.

The lag is one thing I didn't think about and that could very well have been what it was.

Hello Zelot37, I don't know much about dsync, but that might have been what it was. It was just my initial knee jerk reaction to think it was a hacker. I do look forward to future updates.

I only have 80 hours so far, so I'm not veteran by any means and anyone who can, please correct me, but I have to say this. I've experienced desync. I've experienced a loss of connection to the server. They have both happened many times in the time I've played. I locked two zombies in a house and ran halfway down the road while they pummeled a ficus. The thing is, the server thought that I was the ficus for some reason and I kept getting hit. I've had it to where no items will transition at all. I can't pick anything up, I can't put anything down, I can't combine items, I can't equip anything.

No matter what has happened though, I have never been locked in one place or stuck moving slowly. Not even for a second. Lag does not seem to effect your own movement on your client, only on the server. So what happens is that you get rubberbanded back to the last point that the server could verify your location, but you can still move around freely on your client in the meantime until the server and your client synchronize. This sounds fishy to me, and I'm usually the last person to cry hacks. I know that gamers are prone to such exaggerations. It's just that the lag explanation doesn't add up with my experience thus far. If anyone can chime in here, by all means, please do.

Dsync is lag between the client and the server

This pretty much sums up my opinion on the game right now.

I recommend joining a Roleplay server, like Friendly Flash Mob. It's a lot more realistic of a game in servers like this. People don't shoot on sight, except in certain areas where it makes sense you would do so.

Did you play in 1st person perspective? Cause if so, here's two possible explanations:

- you may have accidentially locked your character into leaning to one side by doubletapping Q or E. Until doubletapping again, you can only walk slowly. Without seeing your character   this can easily cause some irritation at first.

- Or what if someone else snuck up on you and restrained you, while you were fumbling with your inventory and controls? ;)

Welcome to Dayz! To answer your question about zombies. They are currently being working on in the experimental branch. The new systems are being tested, debugged, and tweaked. Hopefully soon we will see a new variety of zombies, with a new AI, plus a lot more zombies. In a status report they have reported having 1500 zombies on the map with good performance. We are starting to see the real zombies. As for your walking slow. It could be a hacker, but I honestly think that you probably were messing with your controls and could of accidentally enabled walking in your panic. Once your locked in walking you can only walk until you toggle it off. Don't worry though, they are also currently working on new character controls. As far as we know they are shooting to get to Dayz 1.0 by the end of this year and release the beta in 2016. Hope I answer your questions.

Btw I've been playing since Dayz Mod. Owned and coded a Days Mod server too xD

@Gannaf @Kronons @coldatrophy

I’ve already chalked up my experience to possible lag, dysnc or even my own clumsiness. That being said, I’ve moved on and have been enjoying the game.

This game is a strange one. The first two hours into this game I found it boring and I was regretting buying it, now many hours later I’m a total addict and can’t wait until the next time I can get on.

I understand there are still bugs and it's still in development. Such as yesterday, when I logged onto a server and right off the bat a zombie was attacking me. But this game is very rewarding and has much potential.

..//..

I was fumbling with my keys trying to make things happen.

..//..

Hi Exiled

I hope you stay with the game ..seems to me that once players decide they like it, they stay with DayZ a long time.

I think something like Gannaf's idea is the answer to your question .. IMO the best thing is to arrange the key settings to suit your play (you know this already, right?). This is a good way to learn the keys too, there are some interesting options, and some things to look out for.

e.g. If you press the key for "free look" you can turn your head without moving your body. But this means your body can not turn until you come out of free look.. In 3d person this has a strange effect that will totally throw you, because suddenly you can only run in a straight line, whichever direction you try to take.. . If a new player presses that key by mistake in an action situation, it can be extremely bewildering (like 100% panic!). This mistake scared the sheet out of me the first time I did it, I ran straight out of cover and could not go back, running the wrong way...very hairy.

If you slide items from your inventory into the line of boxes at the bottom of the screen, then you can bring them into your hands using your top-row number keys, with your inventory shut. You really need to do this, for instance to bring out your gun in an action situation (is no good opening your inventory to get your gun out). Or, with your inventory shut, you can take a bandage right out of you backpack into your hand with one key-press. you get the habit of always keeping the same kit in the same quick-draw slots - for me key "0" is always bandages or rags, key "1" is melee weapon, key "2" is gun... it saves a lot of 'stress'.

- play again, you'll love it. Then it gets worse.. (don't say I didn't warn you). This game is unique.

[Edit: I see you been playing a week already, so I guess you're hooked.] hey, one key change that is very helpful - put your "interact" keypress on to your mouse-wheel press button, so you can move and change direction and also pick up loot, or open and shut doors, all with one hand...

Enjoy.

For now, we all have to deal with lack of zombies and quite a few bugs. But the game will improve as development progresses.
