My greatest help for you, is to not ask for help. This game is infinitely more fun if you don't know where you are.

Being lost is part of the beginning of the DayZ experience. A lot of people would point you to an online map but I'm not going to do that for you. The position of the sun is very important for knowing your way around. The Sun gets up in the east --> goes south --> goes west in a circel, you know what I mean. You can also look for the Nothern star in the night, there are several youtube tutorials online. Try to find a map in the houses and try to verify where you are on there by reading the citynames. You can also ask fellow survivors ingame for help.

But don't use the online map it won't feel as rewarding as using an ingame map and figuring out where you are.

The DayZDB map Hasi referenced is the best. While I appreciate that some people enjoy being lost and just finding their way, I personally don't have time to wander for hours. I like to get to where I want to go as quickly as possible. The online map helps me do that. If you have dual-monitors or an iPad, just stick it up there and go on your merry way. Note that things still won't be in English. Almost every town I've been to has a road sign just outside of it so you know where you're at. Just compare that to the map. It won't take long before you start recognizing the bigger places.

and you can combine ingame map parts to a full map:

N+S->full

W+E->full

SW+SE->S

NW+NE->N

NW+SW->W

NE+NE->E

I made a map of East Chernarus but was unable to view it. Was I not going about opening it the correct way or was it that I have to have a full map before it can be opened and viewed?

It all depends on how much time you have and what your style of play is.

If you'd like to cheat, use DayZDB

if you'd like more immersion, find a map

If you'd like the most immersion, craft a full map, get a compass, find a Russian learning book, and learn how to read the road signs.

A lot of how I learned the cryllic alphabet is from DayZ mod and ArmA.

Either way, without a general sense of the area or a sense of direction, you're going to be messed up until you start to learn the map.

Did you put the map in one of your "fast access" inventory slots 0-9? Should work from there, no matter if it is a single or full map...

I see. I didn't even know that those were quick access inventory slots. How I have managed to stay alive this long is beyond me.

I prefer the use of the ingame map too. To collect and puzzle a full map is always one of my first tasks after respawning...

If I am not completely mistaken, clouds always move from west to east.

Have the inventory open and just drag the item of your choice into the slot position.

There is a thread about this (and how players prefer to set this bar up), I think, but I couldn´t find it anymore, sorry

http://forums.dayzgame.com/index.php?/topic/218931-how-do-you-set-up-your-hotbar-and-why/?hl=hotbar

Most people prefer to have like the melee weapon on 1, guns and sidearms on the the following numbers. I like to have the map on 0, compass on 9, bino´s on 8 and so on from the right side.

It might come in handy one day if you stick to you personal preferance in the setup and use of the keys.

I started using them today after reading this. Very handy. I feel like an idiot for not recognizing that those were there.

I just got killed by nothing though so I think I'm gonna take a break. I was standing there, looking at a canteen, when my screen went black and it said "You are dead." Oh well I guess.

Your post conflicts me a little. Whilst I agree with most of your points, particularly the ones about immersion and generally needing a sense of direction anyway, saying that using the online map is cheating is disingenious at best.

Tell me, when your character dies do you smash your own real life head against a wall until you get amnesia and forget everything you know about DayZ? No? Then...you cheat. Right? Same thing really... but what the heck, have some beans anyway.

Trust me, I wish I could.

This game is 100% better when you don't know what you're doing.

would anyone like to use teamspeak when i go on though and show me around I'm a friendly player, as well I'm still learning where to find most loot spawns any ways so if you could kill me or i get killed it wouldn't matter to me as i recently been playing so I'm barely new any ways.

i would like to join a clan as well if anyone has an active clan out here?

Click on your name at the top right hand corner of this screen and then click on "Settings" which appears underneath it.

On the Settings page you will see "Signature" about halfway down on the left hand side.  You can click on that to go to the page where you can insert whatever text \ image \ link etc... you want.

Just check the forum rules first, in case there are any restrictions! ;-)
