Crafted Leather cloths

Recommended Posts

By the time I get a gun and ammo to kill a boar, deer, or what ever, I found a rain coat and a dry bag. So I lose interest in going through all the work to "make" my own stuff.

Obv. I have not make any leathers yet. I was wondering, are they are water proof? Will I be dry with them?

They aren't completely waterproof like drybag and Sposn (0%) but they do have a low absorbency rate of 5%.  Hunting backpack 40%, Mountain 20%, Taloon 30% and improvised pack is 5% absorbency,   Unfortunately there is no real advantage to improvised bags if you find a drybag or a sposn first.  Improvised items would make more sense if they gave you a clear advantage (after putting in the time an effort to craft it).

I craft the vest every once in a while.  It has a larger capacity than the UK Assault Vests.  Other than that there's really not much reason to craft clothes except to say you've done it.

I wish they had a Cool hat that actually looked like it went with the outfit , like a Racoon pelt hat. The crafted leather hat they have now looks like something that old people wear to the beach. It like so doesen't even have the look of the crafted leather outfit. I always look for the tan cowboy hat to wear when i have that outfit on. It looks so much better than that bucket cap. Plus if they added it we could hunt Racoons too :)

Wear ALL the leather!!

Leather_zps0c208899.jpg

But yeah, other than the storage vest with its very useful 10 slots, it's not really worth the effort unless you are playing a natural survival\wilderness hunter type.  And no, not waterproof either.

1) Change the leather-making process to only involve the hide and "brains" of the animal, and it will be worth the effort. All the materials you need to make leather IRL can be found on an animal corpse.

2) Leather isn't waterproof because it was formerly the skin of an animal. By brain-tanning and smoking the hide, you make it so the leather doesn't turn into rawhide when it gets wet. Stone-Age (which is a misnomer, as the "Stone Age" lasted for over 200,000 years.) peoples used hair-on hides to repel water, or woven-grass capes.

I tried crafting all the items just to take a look at them but i mainly use the vest and backpack, sometimes the pants.

Those moccasins wear down pretty fast or is that just my impression?

The hat looks !"#¤ indeed. That racoonhat would be nice, maybe with an old kentucky rifle, just joking as i know it wouldn't fit the setting of the game.

I would like that vest even better if the clipping issue with the raincoat was resolved.

My impression is that the leather outfit has terrible camovalues (vs infected/animals) if there is such a thing. Can anyone confirm that or is it just paranoia?

I crafted a leather vest on my 3pp, its not bad, holds 10 slots. Just wish it was a little darker for camo reasons, its almost lite tan. Lugging lime around gets kind of old fast, fucking takes 6 slots. So its probably best to do it early on or when you can spare 6 slots and get over with quickly to lug around that huge bag around. When I made mine I had to make room for that un godly bag of lime lol I hope to see more alt methods put in the game for stuff like tanning and lighting fires. Things were if you if you know what your doing you could survive off the land right out of the gate as a fresh spawn.

Deer seem to have the most amount of leather vs say a boar. So boars produce 2, cows I think 3 and deer 4 peices...Pretty sure thats right.

Off the subject, Im still learning things about dayz to this day LOL Funny thing is, with all the new changes with .53, I learned about stuff the hard way a couple of times, like the cooking changes ways to do it right and the old ways that do not work anymore. I ruined 8 peices of meat, and a pot just by putting it on a fire, when I should have built a oven. I was kind of annoyed it took me probably 30 minutes to hunt the 2 animals. By the time I got the found a nice place to make a fire then get the fire made I invested prob 45 minutes maybe longer. I was hoping to have enough meat to last me a couple sessions, in a nice pot that only takes up 4 slots but carrys 8 (nice add!). But nooooooooooooo my pot and all the meat was ruined...god dam it all to hell! :o God dam this game! rant rant rant...I going to play go play skyrim! I will never ever ever make that mistake again haha

Re the tanning, it's not quite balanced at the moment.  You are correct that boars make 2, cows 3 and deer 4 pieces of hide, but that's not in proportion to the amount of inventory space they take up.  For example, the boar skin takes 10 slots in a 5 long\2 deep config but only gives 2 hides but the smaller deerp pelt (4x2) gives 4 hides.  Huh?  It feels a bit counter intuitive.

Also, why can you only make the leather sack our of boar pelt and not the others?

Then, when it comes to actually tanning them, you cannot combine bags of lime and you have to have enough in the bag to tan a full pelt.  So a 30% full bag of lime cannot tan a deer hide at all (needs 40%) nor can you add a 10% bag of lime to the 30% bag to make the 40% you need.  Annoying!

I also lost a lot of meat and a cooking pot with the changes in 0.53 - is there no change log where we can find this stuff out?  That said, it's still enjoyable learning about the changes and finding new stuff out.  Plus, it really feels like the game is moving in the right direction with the advances in cooking and tanning etc..  I'm very optimistic for the future :-)

Your feeling the pain. Your right it is counter intuitive in a way. I mean the leather stuff, you would think that would to encourage players to survive off the grid. But for me lol it caused me to spend even more time in a urban setting to find the lime. So seeing a alt method to tanning or preparing the leather for use would be nice.

Funny thing is I started my new avatar on 3pp when .53 came out. I intended on, just getting the things I needed, ghillie, and a modest kit, then to pretty much live off the grid. But it seems Im spending allot of time in urban areas looking for things, like having to look for another pot that was ruined for example. Man oh man, it has took me quite a while to get set up to live not have to go into towns, almost starting to wonder if its even worth it. Its really my own fault though I should have checked out some videos of the changes like I normally do instead of just thing it would be easy hahaha hey at least I admit it.

The reality is my avatar is doing pretty good, and I really should not piss about minor stuff, it could be far worse.

A thing to note about leather is that it is pretty much the in-game color in real life; a dingy kind of beigey tan brown. You make it that color by smoking it.
