Don't be perturbed if you don't find friendlies most of the time......we are out there.

You will die ... a lot. Especially in the beginning. There is a steep learning curve, so do not get discouraged. Once you get the hang of it, you will still die. But, if you do a postmortem each time, you will learn much more quickly.

I found the vids on the Wobo YouTube site very helpful in explaining the game mechanics.

I concur with the mic thing- if you want to run around and get acquainted with the interface and some of the functions of the game then go ahead but if you don't have a mic configured at all you won't be able to see people direct texting you or hear them talking to you... I'm not sure if you want to call it a bug but having no mic will result in that- it's a common problem.

As for a good mic- I recommend a headset so you don't have to lean over towards a boom... cheap boom mics are a bit restrictive. Tried one out and quickly changed to a headset with mic. I just got a cloud II that I'm anxious to try out!

Best advice I can give that I never got and learned the hard way:

  • You will die alot in the start
  • DayzDB map is your best friend
  • Get a mic (as stated above)
  • Do not get attached to your gear (you will loose to either server glitches or other people)
  • Friendly people are out there, you just need to find them
  • Be cautious around people
  • If you have to travel long distances plan your route ahead and use woods and cover when doing so. (Don't run down the middle of the road)
  • If you have some time look through some of the guides here on the forums

Welcome to DayZ SA. GL&HF out there!

Didn't I see you in Silence of the Lambs, and Tenderness of the Wolves ?

Or was it the Silence of the Wolves and the Tenderness of the Lambs ?

- just joking, I know you're a GOOD person really and you generally make sure your victims die painlessly ( .. fast, anyway..)

OP - Lunaticfringe420 even if you have a mike.. be careful to stay out of sight or at a good distance before you say anything. Dont let players come close to you while you're talking with them, that's usually a bad sign.  AND don't get depressed about how many times you die when you are a beginner.. probably about 5 times a day? You learn as you go, and its tough. This is a great game.

DemonGroover really is a helpful guy in fact (as far as I know).

I hate the "dont get attached to you gear"-self appointed teacher guys. Its one main element of the game to find nice gear and try to keep it. You should have fun with your gear and get attatched to it. But you should also keep in mind, that it can be gone the next moment.

ah - a self-appointed "You should have fun with your gear and get attached to it" teacher guy...

hehe - well;, play it how you feel.. beginners in this game usually loose heart because they die before they get of the beach, the die before they open a can of beans, they die for some reason they don't understand, they die of starvation before they find out where they are, they die the first zombie they meet, they die the first player they meet, they freeze to death, they die from a glitch, they die the second player they meet, they die slowly, they die fast, they fall off things, they die the third player they meet after they've been leg-broken and insulted, they die of thirst, they die because they can't find anything to open food with, or they just die suddenly before they know what even happened ..

- you don't often hear a first time player saying "I started yesterday, now I'm all geared up, and my truck is full of food and ammo and fuel, my tent is full of weapons and spare AKs, and I built a stone oven for all the game meat and fish I caught, now what do?"

but yes - you can either like your gear, or don't care about it - you're the player, it's your game.. but you WILL die anyway, however you play, and your gear WILL be gone. Loosing all your gear and starting on the beach in your underwear eventually gets to be FUN too.. Just don't give up when you're new to the game, because that WILL happen a LOT.

xx pilgrim (self-appointed "I do what I like, including playing DayZ since long ago" ...IMO... guy)

I DIED LESS THAN ONE MILLION TIMES

I can understand the hate towards people like that. And I can agree that yes, you want to survive as long as you can with your gear, but one way or another you will loose it. You can always find more in DayZ with time. Its just good advice for new players to never get attached to anything they find.... It can be gone in a blink of an eye.

It's not than we are self appointed teacher guys m8, the forums used to get clogged up with crying cunts that would have to come into the forum and make a list of the gear they lost for x reason, and much like the contemporary "to the guy that killed me at x, or to the guy I killed at X " posts that we have to endure now, no one gave two fucks about them then like now, it was easier to say, "there, there, don't get attached to your gear." when they come to the forums looking tea & sympathy rather than "fuck off you crying cunt no one cares.."

As a Born Again Bambi (having left the game for a year and forgotten how to play it), usually when I spawn on the coast I head to the rowing boats on the shore and pick up a raincoat, boots and a hat. The raincoat is quite essential early on to keeping you dry, at least that's what I've learned. Focus on food, drink and rucksacks/storage. If you can get a weapon early on, that's great as well but you want to prevent dehydration and starvation, which can creep up fast if you're moving particularly long distances. I find I need to get away from the coastal towns as soon as possible because I'll just get shot by a sniper or someone armed to the teeth. Also, I don't want to get captured again and do humiliating things to survive, lol :). My degree of experience with countering precision players is weak so I am not attempting to compete with players who have a great deal more experience in this sort of PvP conflict, but I will learn and get better and hopefully change my approach as a result.

But for now...

Plan a route on dayZDB map and take the quieter route to those locations if you can (note: as I get more familiar with DayZ I find I use the map less and less). I mostly head North as soon as I can because it gives me more satisfaction to at least get out of the line of fire and into something of a survival pattern i.e. going from the smaller towns to smaller towns to pick up the odd supplies. I usually try and aim for a few small places first before heading into a larger area for medical supplies and firearms. I've had the most success in game using this approach. If I meet a player along the way I am friendly and usually at this point you're meeting friendlier players anyway, but always be on your guard. If I have an abundance of supplies I can barter with the player if they're hostile. Rice, Cereal & Water have saved my skin a few times.

Anyway that's I how I play the game for now. To each their own.

Welcome and Godspeed! The game is fun but can be a bit frustrating.

Just keep playing, learn how the players act/react. You will notice a lot of people shoot without aiming the first shot. Its a reaction of them being scared and or surprised at your location. Take your time, learn, and most importantly, HAVE FUN. Just a game, but a life for some
