Question about draw distance

Recommended Posts

I posted up today in the hills directly to the north of the new prison island.  I wanted to watch all the KoS from a long distance (approx. 1500 meters) with binoculars.  The server was full.  After 5 minutes I didn't see any sign of life.  So I jumped to another full server, same thing.  I repeated this 4 or 5 times and never saw any players.

Was it just chance that on 5 full servers I never saw a single player on this new island?  Or is that distance too far to see other people?  I just assumed that If I could clearly see the prison that I'd also be able to see other players.

Depends, I know the draw distance on a ghillie is about 300 anywhere past that and its just a floating rifle running around.  I have yet to really test the distance otherwise for player visuals.

Draw distance has always been one of my biggest pet peeves with Arma and DayZ. Same with render distance as well.

It's all so inconsistent. I can never tell how it's going to work

Wait, seriously? It stops rendering people at 300m because they're in a ghillie? Thats fucking horrendous.

Pretty much.

Not only that but the draw distance seems to have been a bit nerfed from Arma 2 in dayz and arma 3.

In Arma 2 I remember playing ace mod and being able to see out to 5km out with players being visible at 2500m +  Vehicles visible at 3000m+ and bases visible out past 5km.

Problem lies with the object and character render distance.

Yea, I tested it last patch after a mate created one, after 300 his body went invisible, this is not prone or the like specifically standing.  From there I could still make out his weapon as he ran around but the body mass was not present.  It's also a known issue so its not something that has been placed on the back burner its just what the current state was when I was testing it out.

i personally would like it if you could do what you are able to in some modded Arma servers and set your render distances for Air, ground objects, etc. Arma 3 lets you do that, but for some reason mine never really seemed to work right.

You didn't see anyone because I'd already killed everyone. Sorry.

Player draw distance is the distance of the network bubble, so 1km.

At 1500m you were too far away.

It's unfortunate because it would be fun to snipe past 1km like in the mod/arma, but oh well!

Probably subject to change so Hopefully it improves.

I kinda doubt it.  Besides long range sniping there's not a lot of reason to extend it past 1km.  And we've seen how much they like sniping in the SA (not much love there).  For performance issues etc they probably settled on that range for a reason.

I mean, who knows, but I really wouldn't expect it to change.

Being able to hit/see someone at 1k+ meters brings a lot more cons than pros to the game. If it could be done without negatively affecting performance, I would be all for it. But that is not the case, so it's not something that will likely be looked into by the devs until final development or post release development. We'll live.

What about scouting ahead.

Being able to see players from 2km or more would be fairly valuable for avoiding trouble .

Besides hopefully when the gunplay mechanics are more refined and shooting is realistic 1000m shots would be on the rare side of things.

you wouldnt be able to distinguish a ghillie in grass from 300m away anyway so it is kind of good that the draw distance is limited

There's a lot of scenarios where you'd be able to see a ghillie, especially just a guy standing up.  It sounds like a bug to me.  There's been other items of clothing/objects that don't render properly at a distance so it's probably just related to that.

I sat by the lighthouse on the hill and could see two of my friends running around on the island quite clearly, they looked like tiny little ants but I could see them. I was not using binoculars or a scope.

This is very true,

Even with my card maxxeddddd out it shows nobody there. So it isn't just high end cards, vrs lower end cards either. You still need a decent card though for rendering distances.

It does save your life .05% chance :)

Steak&Potatoes is right.

In case you guys haven't seen it yet, i found this really interesting ;

ghillie suit rendering at distance.

I think it's somewhat fair. You really shouldnt be able to spot a bush that far but i understand that in your scenario you should.

Id maybe buff the distance from 400 to 600~800 when playing on very high but no further. What i would much rather see, is the same drawing distance on low or high object settings when it comes to player characters. They could always make a different drawing distance for stances like lying or running, but that would need allot of work othervise it would just result in ghillie snipers getting a cloak device at will.

Or they could just make it so that no matter what, as long as you're inside the games render distance it renders you regardless of stance /clothes.

You could miss a ghillie at any range in ArmA provided they weren't making themselves incredibly obvious. Just because you stuck some grass and leaves in fishing net doesn't mean you become invisible.

Player draw distance is the distance of the network bubble, so 1km.

This, all players disappear after 1000 m. Which is ridiculous, they should extend it to at least 1500 m or make it so servers can change it.

so if you want to just go for player spotting, why have draw distance/rend distance over 1k?

Sometimes I want to see if there is anything happening on the island before I make that long swim. But with it being over 1km in distance it's just a guess and could be a huge risk.

I might just wait for the boats to show up.  Seems like a terrible idea to swim out there on a populated server
