A heatpack will help, but only a bit. It's mostly an emergency measure while you look for better ways to get warm. Best to get a fire going ASAP.

I can't say, I've never used one before. Maybe the in-game description mentions it?

Heatpacks don't seem to work in the last patch if you ask me, correct me if I'm wrong though.

Best way it to get a fire going. Just chop a tree, drag the wood on some rags, put the fireplace kit on the ground, light it up with matches.
Also, stay out of the rain.

I think they are working. In the last week me and a friend have both used heat packs with positive impact on our temperature status, changing from freezing to cold after we activated the packs, without us doing anything else that we are aware would impact our temperature. But the effect does not seem to be very powerful, with my friend starting to freeze again very soon after the pack stopped working.

I didn't time it but felt like my pack lasted about 5 minutes.

General advice on keeping warm:

So definitely not a solution to the problem of freezing, more a temporary respite to buy you the time you need to get a fire going. Whilst you try and get a fire going, make sure you have decent warm clothing on (and I presume it needs to not be ruined - my friend kept freezing whilst I was ok - after a while we realised his jacket was ruined, found him a new one and then he stopped freezing), walk or jog (don't sprint) and stick to low ground. If it's raining, stay inside but keep walking around. Not sure if it works or not, but also try wringing out your clothes.

Finally, there are some clothing items that seem to make you immune to getting wet, which is a major cause of freezing. Obviously this includes the bright yellow, orange or green rain jackets (which is why they are one of my favourite clothing items) but it also seems to include many of the combat jackets you can find in military bases. You can stand in the rain all day long whilst wearing these and never get wet, and hence cold. :-)

Heat packs just set your players temperature back to default. But then it immediately starts to decrease again. I suggest that you use the heat pack at the last minute when it says

"I Am Dying of Hypothermia" and then once your cold timer is reset, go start a fire.

Is this true? I've tried 5 so far and didn't notice any impact to my temp. Last night I was in a 'cold' state and was disappointed that the heat pack I used didn't help at all. Best way to get warm and stay that way is to just keep sprinting. Although OP said he was already in a state of hypothermia so...

This is in fact true, I haven't ever used a heat pack when just cold, but when dying from being too cold; using the heat pack really helps

I don't bother with heatpacks anymore, animal guts is the way to go. They seem to warm you up faster imo and can also be reused by putting them into a fire and back in your inventory.

Heatpacks are amazing. They do work in the current patch, too.

Something else that works that not everyone is aware of: when you kill a deer/boar/cow/human you can sometimes loot their guts. If you cook the guts on the fire, they'll get very hot after a few minutes. They work the same way as a heatpack, and just as effectively. The great part about them is that you can reheat them later; they never deteriorate or burn.

I had never thought of doing that, even after observing the effects of putting guts on the fire. I didn't realize that putting hot items in your inventory had any effect on your body temperature -- is this true of all items, or just guts in particular?
