Correction: you need an "ashwood stick" to make a bow.

 

Once you see an Ash tree, you will be facepalming, because they are absolutely EVERYWHERE.

 

 

Essentially, they are the small, spherical trees, with mixed light and dark green leaves, and a stout white trunk. Cut it down, and you will get an ashwood stick with the firewood. Attach a rope and you are good to go!

 

As for making arrows, you need a knife/machete, regular sticks (from a bush or split firewood), and feathers. Feathers can be found in chicken coops, those little square shedlike boxes you find in backyards, the ones with the little ramps. Go up and use the action command to search for feathers. It has a high success rate, and they stack. 

 

Once you have a good number of feathers, take your knife and "sharpen" the sticks, then add the feathers. Arrows take up two horizontal blocks, and can only be stacked in blocks of 5.

 

As for using the bow, I find 3PP much easier. Lift the bow up, wait until it swings all the way to the left, then draw and loose. It can actually make 30m shots if you know how to arc arrows.

You can take feathers from chicken coops now. They're in every town. I remember when I went through my bow phase. no backpack space went unfilled with sticks.

The bow's maximum distance is +100 or even 200 metres (i.e. when you shoot at 45 degree angle, but I tested that along time ago), while it's effective range is like maybe 3-5 metres. I had a bow phase myself and it was remarkably short. Unless you go only against animals and zombies and even then only at very close distances. The sway is just unpredictable and too often I hit zombies in elbows (which is funny, because with no shot noise they sometimes don't know what hit them and run to their sides).

 

Bolts for the crossbow can be found at fire and police stations, although I admit they're rare. They are also at the arch buildings, at least the red brick one. The crossbow is accurate, even more with the holosight, but has a ridiculous rate of fire so you'd better be a good shoot. In general, both weapons get a lot of points for style, but make up for it with uselessness. I hope at least the bow will be improved.

 

I still run around the HC server with my crossbow, though.
