Fuel Source Depletion And Alternative Fuel Sources (Server Uptime)

<_< I meant the car engine. not the game engine.

Stand by my point, Diesel-Engine's can take this kind of stuff easily.

Have you ever actually seen a car in real life that runs on fry oil from McDonalds? Im gonna assume that's a no. And, as you said yourself, the technology is not common. So in DayZ, which is at least several years after the collapse of society, there probably wont be any of this type of technology left.

If you bring up mythbusters, then it worth noting that they did an episode where they tested moonshine, as fuel source and it worked ~fine all cars including new model with a "CPU" (engine control unit)

could we have a few petrol tankers lying at random around Chernarus with the other vehicles?
one or two could be pristine, most of them broken down, and you could repair them and drive around, or siphon petrol out of them

So in DayZ, which is at least several years after the collapse of society, there probably wont be any of this type of technology left.

The game is set in a period of days after the outbreak, that's why it's called Day Z [Days], right? Days, Not years. This is not YearZ.
Hence

If anyone wants to bring up the messy buildings as a sign of time passing: Chernarus has had "many months of civil war" in ArmA canon, and is poor as dirt.
Days is long enough for looters to clear the supermarkets and only leave scraps, but short enough for fruit in people's houses to still be edible.
The notion years have passed is an easily made mistake, but can be avoided by critical thinking.

You bring up some good points. However I have some points contradicting that.

-where is the military from other countries? Namely the U.S., whenever something like this happens the US always send a a military force to assist. A great example is the Ebola outbreak, the US sent a small number of troops to help contain it. Since DayZ is such a bigger event, the military presense would have been greater.

-gas does decay and run less efficiently, but it does still work for many many years. I buy many old ATV's and mopeds and such off Craigslist, some of them havnt worked since the 90's and people never changed the gas because they never rode them. I fix them up, try starting it and sometimes 10+ year old gas still works.

-an outbreak simply would not wipe out the entire world that quickly. It would take AT LEAST a month, probably several. it would have to cross oceans and reach every single spot to wipe out everyone, that would take quite a while. We all assume the rest of the world is gone in DayZ too, yes? Otherwise where are they at, why aren't they helping us and why don't we go there?

-simply for the sake of gameplay. If it was as realistic as possible, there would be absolutely 0 usuable clothing and 0 food able to be looted. Hunting/fishing would be the ONLY source of food. There would be no gas, so no cars for the game either. It would ruin the game, theres a line between realism and fun of gameplay that devs must tread on.

I hope you understand my points here. Thank you.

We don't know that...

Its a good idea, but its simply not possible. Unless you switch out the entire engine pretty much, you cannot convert it to different fuel types. Now, that being said, there are cars that are able to take multiple fuels, for example I know that most minivans being made today have the option to take gas with ethanol added to it, along with straight up gasoline. I think it would be cool to have different cars that take different types of gas in-game, it would be hilarious when the casuals take the first gas can they find and put it into their car and completely destroy the engine :P

Also, is there such thing as cars that run on things like vegetable oil? No offense but im pretty sure that doesn't exist :)

It was a good idea, but its just not realistic and irl not possible to do.

All the best,

Walker

Actually any vehicle could run with an alternative fuel (even with vodka for example) but that would destroy its engine eventually. So yea the idea of using alternative fuel sounds good to me as long as the cars engine degenerates over time..

Actually, we do, and it has.

Thanks for correction, i must have missed something then...

Hmm..well, looks like I was wrong. However, just because the technology exists does not mean that it is common and found everywhere. Have you ever actually seen a car in real life that runs on fry oil from McDonalds? Im gonna assume that's a no. And, as you said yourself, the technology is not common. I think your missing the point still which is why I made this post to begin with, there is no amazing 50 years into the future technology, its quite literally 99% of older vehicles can run of alternate fuel sources with minimal to no changes at all to them.  Read through the thread before replying it covers people internationally knowing others who are doing this IRL, including myself with an old F-250 diesel truck looking to run it off Bio Diesel.

So what you're saying is you first thought that this idea wasn't realistic so it shouldn't be implemented, now you've been proven wrong so it's too realistic and shouldn't be implemented.

Logic? None found here.

Im for the idea for hardcore servers.

hopefully we can have more vehicles but none of them have any gas.

Foreign countries DID send aid. There's SAS stuff lying around too, isn't there? And NATO/UN stuff? And a crashed foreign copter? I forget if it's UK or US, but it is foreign

Maybe other countries are just dealing with their own zombie problem. Or maybe they put Chernarus under quarantine. We don't know, but we do have irrefutable evidence of time like the fruit, and the usable Epipen that expires in 2015 another guy kindly pointed out.
